Since extra games probably isn't going to happen anytime soon, and the NFL still likes Thursday Night Football...why don't they expand the season to 18 weeks, and give every team two byes?
The catch would be that the second bye would come before a Thursday game. That way teams would actually have a chance to rest up and practice before a Thursday game, putting a better product on the field.
While it won't give the NFL extra games, it will spread some games out, and could add five extra broadcast windows.

I doubt a bye could have saved the Redskins last night. Sigh...
