So I ask you, should our resident superman, Sam Rogers, take on the duties of 3rd string QB? As a passer, he's completed 100% of his passes (for a whopping 9 yards, but still). Every down could be a direct snap to a rusher. He could even block for himself...

I want to see it. Just for the off chance that he drops back, passes the ball, it's tipped at the LOS, and he catches it and runs it in for a TD.

Ok, I'm going to show my ignorance here in hopes of coming out educated, but I thought running back was more of a category. Kind of like wide receiver. So, running back:fullback::wide receiver:flanker. Am I wrong in thinking this?
Fullbacks are usually larger than running backs and usually not as quick. I'm sure there are exceptions to that, but I am with you on the wide receiver:flanker:split end and on this team, often tight end. Bucky isn't exactly out there to block. Not saying he can't or anything, he's just used more in the passing game as a wideout. And that's perfectly okay with me, he's pretty darn good at it

I now realize my comment sounded a little well, that guy-ish. It was real early in the morning, didn't mean to sound like that.
I always thought that halfback/tailback and fullback were subsets of "running back". At the NFL combine and for fantasy football don't they categorize the fullbacks and tailbacks as "running backs". Like the poster above said, it is analogous to flanker, slot receiver, split end, etc. all being subsets of "wide receiver".
This has always been my understanding as well, FB and HB are both different types of RB.
In fantasy football you can play Fullbacks in the RB slot.

To be honest, I have no problem with Bucky or Sam taking the third string snaps rather than Ford. I would be upset if we burned a redshirt for 10 carries in a season (Really Beamer?) or three games remaining. Realistically, Motley might see the field in the second half against Wake. But baring injury this season is Brewer's for good or ill.
I'd rather have Sam throwing to Bucky than Bucky throwing to Sam.

It's against NCAA rules. When Sam Rogers was created in the lab there was a secret agreement that we could not use him as a QB because it would give us an unfair advantage.

For a 4-5 team that has to win 2 of 3 just to make a low level bowl, it would be wise to have your QB of the future (whoever that is) maintain the most eligibility. I'd be fine with Rodgers taking the snaps. I remember Maryland was playing a converted linebacker last year at one point when they had all those injuries.
I trust Sam to throw it into the flat and if the play breaks down to take off and run. I mean, what is the worst that could happen? We are already in the midst of a terrible year, give us the peoples champ at QB. At least it would interesting to watch.
I agree, and besides, this is only going to happen if Brewer and Motley go down (knock on wood). Of course there could be some combination of injury/helmet coming off/other bizarre NCAA rule that could result in us reaching that far down the depth chart.

I thought the question was rather serious. If you consider the redshirting QBs as off-limits, who's next up after Motley? Seriously. The only non-redshirting QB on the roster is walk-on Matt Hill. It's sort of a scary proposition to have only 2 scholarship QBs at this level. As the point was made above, Maryland went through 5 guys at the QB position one year, to the point where they weren't even playing a QB at QB! Rogers was a HS QB and was pretty good, so I think it's a legitimate question. Of course, we also have other HS QBs on the roster - Hodges, Parker, Caleb, etc. Interesting (but somewhat anxiety-inducing) to think about.

Rogers would be our Tebow, just a bit lighter and with a better arm. I do think that Rogers could be a best-of-a-bad-situation-type quarterback since he probably already knows every single play, route, and snap count, and his leadership would be the critical element that takes him over the top.
Plus, we know he has mobility. With him and Hodges on the field, and Caleb at tailback, we'd be...."multiple".
I watched Rogers in HS and he was a running much more than a thrower at QB.
Not saying we are hurting at that position. just saying that there have been more bizzare QB situations recently.

From my understanding the 3rd String QB doesn't get any actual reps in practice, he merely attends meetings. That's why it didn't really matter that Motley had a class conflict for part of practice since he was third string. Now that he's second string they have had to work around it. In regards to Sam Rogers being QB, if we suddenly were without both QB's for the UVA and/or hopefully a bowl game, I would hope they wouldn't burn Ford or Durkin's redshirt, and do a Bucky, Sam QB committee.
If Bucky runs the Wild Turkey, what would Sam Rogers under center be called?

Based on all the coaches' comments about how well Rogers knows the playbook, he would be the right choice. If not him, then the walk-on or Hodges.
As someone who played Rogers in high school, for three years, the kid was a hell of a quarterback rarely made mistakes and was pretty efficient whenever Hanover decided to pass. Oh and as you all already know hitting him feels like hitting a brick wall and getting hit by him will leave you looking for the number of the bus that just hit you.
In all seriousness why not Caleb? He is a converted qb that we have played at just about every skill position we have except qb so let's complete the full move. We have not utilized his abilities fully yet so let's give it a try here.
I do not like the idea of switching over chuck Norris' s protg as we have had so many injuries in backfield it is nice to keep him there as a one man wrecking crew capable of blocking, catching and pounding the rock!
Caleb didn't throw a whole heck of a lot in high school. He did most of his damage with his legs using his crazy athleticism.

Pretty much, yeah. Christiansburg throws it a bit, and Motley has a surprisingly good arm for a guy coming from a primarily running offense.

wasnt really that often that we even asked tyrod to throw it more than 20 times a game, im def okay with an athlete back there if that can make plays with his feet. its easy to find open recievers when they have all day to run routes because they cant tackle your QB if it were caleb. i wouldnt want to take a starter from another position and move him to QB. obviously those guys are pretty valuable where they are and whom ever the QB would be would need Sam and Bucky to be the safety outlets they are and should be right now.
Although I'd rather allow Chris Durkin or Andrew Ford have the 3rd string spot in order for them to develop, I would not be entirely opposed to his.
Sam Rogers can be what ever he wants to be and it is in all of our best interests to stay out of his way.
AJ Huges is already our 4th down QB.
