Devil's Advocate: Scot Loeffler Edition

Because why the hell not?

I wanna revisit the losses this season.

ECU - After the offense came out flat and the defense gave up 21 points in the first quarter, both units stiffened. the offense clawed its way back to post 21 unanswered points and tie the game with 1:20 remaining. The defense then allowed the Pirates to score the winning touchdown sixty-four seconds later.

Georgia Tech - Probably Michael Brewer's worst game this season. There wasn't much wrong with the offensive game plan, but there was a whole hell of a lot wrong with quarterback play. And we still led with 8:03 left in the game. Brewer's third interception was the backbreaker.

PITT - 26 rushing yards. We were without Shai, Juice and Trey. We could never get it going on the ground and our one-dimensional offense wasn't enough.

Miami - We ate a dick. Offense was awful. If not for a garbage time TD by Leal we would have ended the no-shutout streak.

BC - Brewer had probably his best game, but we still couldn't run through a wet paper bag. Kept it close all game, finally took the lead by a point in the 4th but couldn't contain Murphy all day. And my God that was one ugly onside kick.

Wake Forest - We didn't just shit the bed, we shit through the bed.

There are obviously massive problems on O right now, and the game Lefty called against Wake was probably worse than any game I ever saw Stiney call, but I look over the body of work this season and I just can't put all 6 of our losses on Loeffler. ECU was a team loss, GT was on Brewer, Pitt was probably on Lefty for not being able to find a ground game, Miami was definitely on Lefty, BC was at least equally on the D for not having an answer for Murphy, and Wake was 100% Loeffler. It was a hell of a time for him to screw the pooch.

I look at this and I wonder, could we be experiencing a recency effect because the defense struggled early in the season and the offense is struggling as we close it out? There are no excuses for what we saw against Wake. More damning is that we've seen the offense look that bad once already against Miami. And to be honest, I'm not really even arguing that Loeffler shouldn't be fired. But I am saying that we can't blame this entire dumpster fire of a season on him.
