The pool of candidates for every job is going to be tight, Mich, UF, Iowa st, ILL, maybe Indiana, maybe Rutgers, maybe VT.

Next best thing for Tech. If we can't get him , he needs to be as far away from Blacksburg as possible. Clemson will throw a lot of dollars at a new OC to protect the ineptude of Dabo Swinney.
Clemson throws a lot of money at every coach. Going to drive up the cost of the next staff at VT if that's this year or three years from now.
Florida State has already raised that bar .

This is way below the position that Morris COULD have right now. I had two thoughts when I heard this, both pure speculation.
1) The Morris camp is just shooting up a flare saying that he's moving and anyone with interest should start making offers.
2) This might be a Malzahn-like situation, where Morris leaves, they have a bad season with Dabo, fire Dabo, then hire Morris as the next coach.
Or it could be that he really wants to coach SMU. I just doubt it.
It's the malzahn situation with out Morris returning to Clemson. He knows he needs hc experience, SMU is a mud major with some talent looking for a good coach. They both know this is probably just a stepping stone for Morris. If he is there more than 2 years I'll be surprised. Probably only be there 1 year if he does well
The problem is though is that SMU is in such disarray that it will take him more than one year to have success at SMU before thinking about being HC at a P5 school. A one-and-done scenario could be a good set-up for succeeding Beamer, but 2+ years wouldn't work in our favor.

Maybe he's trying to get some on the job training as a Head Coach before he starts going for one of the jobs he really wants?
I have said from Day 1 that I want whoever replaces Beamer to come in with a proven track record as Head Coach and that we absolutely cannot go down a path with an unproven guy who is getting his first head coaching experience with our program (except for someone like Bud who has been mentored within this program for so long it just makes sense). Maybe this is the same mindset that Chad has been hearing as feedback when his people have been putting feelers out to his potential wish list schools (of which we're supposedly on).
In that sense, it kind of makes sense. Get some experience in the minors. When we're ready to bring him on, he's already learned the ropes, so to speak, and is ready for the task at hand.
If beamer retires next year, this move is the best thing that could have happened to us if we want Morris

Because paying $2M per year for a basketball coach in a sport that does not make us money shows we're going to be cheap when it comes to the successor of a legendary head coach of the sport that makes us ALL our money...
Its ridiculous to see so many automatically assume we're going to be a cheap po-dunk school when it comes to hiring Beamer's successor, when Whit has shown from the second he stepped on campus that he is absolutely not going to go down that path.
When the time comes, we'll pay whatever salary we need to bring in the best guy for the job. Period, end of story.
I'm not saying cheap I'm thinking 2.5-2.7 million which for a new coach is top tier pay. 3 million plus is ELITE range for a brand new coach with a new contract.
At $2.7M per year, we would be tied for 33rd nationally with Kentucky and Arizona St (he'll be getting a raise soon) in coaching salaries. If we hope to crack the Top 20 in salaries, we need to be in the range of at least $3.2M per year, based on this year's numbers, which is where I think we would end up.
To put it in perspective, for basketball, we just increased our annual salary expenditure by at least $1,620,000 per year in head coaching salaries alone (from $680k per year to a starting salary of $2.3M per year, with a $100k raise every year). If we were to do the same in football, we are looking at a potential salary for a football head coach of just over $4M per year, and I would expect that to be the high end on what we're willing to offer, which would make any incoming coach the most expensive in the ACC.
But even then, at just exactly $4M per year, we would be offering a salary level outside that of the Top 10 in college football. So no, $3M isn't ELITE coaching salary range, its 'barely gets you in the Top 25' range.
You are looking at current salaries, look at first year contract numbers. Base numbers , not bonuses etc.

Coaches making over the 3 million base in their first/second year Bret Bielema (SEC) left HC job at P5 school, Gus Malzon (SEC) was at same school as OC, James Franklin left HC job at P5 for one of top historical jobs, Charlie Strong at Texas which has more money than anyone it seems. While I agree VT can not pay 1-2 million base I don't see unless it's a knock out hire how you can pay a brand new HC over 3 million based on looking around the country at the numbers.

Gus Malzahn? - $3.8M per year (will likely be due for significant raise soon)
All 3 are guys that would be homerun hires for us. All 3 are either beyond or at the top end of what I am projecting our salary range to be. Malzahn is a great example, as he was lured back to a school in a bad situation, by a school offering a very competitive salary, and turned them around. Chris Petersen was lured away from Boise by Washington for $3.6M per year. Kevin Sumlin is getting $5M per year at Texas A&M. Hell, if you're not willing to pay $3M per year, you're selling yourself short of all the following:
TCU - Gary Patterson - $4,008,150
Missouri - Gary Pinkel - $3,400,000
Arkansas - Bret Bielema - $3,200,000
Clemson - Dabo Swinney - $3,150,000
Baylor - Art Briles - $3,135,146
West Virginia - Dana Holgersen - $3,080,000
Mississippi St - Dan Mullen - $3,000,000 (very likely to significantly increase)
Louisville - Bobby Petrino - $3,000,000
Mississippi - Hugh Freeze - $3,000,000 (very likely to significantly increase)
And with Michigan and Florida about to make significant splashes in the coming weeks, taking their salaries likely from just under $3M per year to very likely at least $5M, that $3.5-$4M baseline becomes even more important to target.
Just to put more numbers with it. of the 24 schools that currently pay more than $3M per season to a head coach, 12 are currently ranked in the Playoff Poll. Those 12 teams consist of all but 2 of the Top 10. Only #2 Oregon (whose coach has ridiculous undisclosed Nike incentives that aren't paid by the school) and #4 Mississippi St, who pays $3M.
The numbers aren't lying. $3M for a head coach in college football is a magic number. Does it always work out for schools? Absolutely not, but it is the entry fee to show a potential head coach that you're serious about competing. If we hope to ever be a contender again, at the very least, that number is the starting point where we can negotiate up.
(its also interesting to note, of the ACC coaches, only 2 make more than $3M per year... Jimbo and Dabo... which also interestingly coincide with the only 2 ACC teams to be ranked in the Top 10 this year)
How is taking coaches making over 3 million in their first year cherry picking? As for some of the others you have named they have been there for years or are at programs that have large donor bases. A 2.5-2.7 range with annual increases seems more doable for a school without the huge donor base.
