That is Jim Weaver's dream.

Not ECU. I'm not afraid to play them again, but we play them EVERY year. Please somebody else, I'd like to play a team we've never played before.

There is nothing in the world like Thursday night in Blacksburg!

http://replygif.net/i/272.gif

Though I would totally be OK with this:

I would love this for purely selfish reasons as Annapolis is less than an hour drive and I would like to take another shot at ECU where we don't spot them 21 points in the game...

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:

Fuck you Stringer

annapolis (not so much ECU) is definitely my wet dream.

~1 hour from my home-for-the-holidays? yes please.

Every second counts

Military Bowl against ECU on the condition that it officially ends the series.

Make it happen Whit!

I hope I live long enough that ECU will be off our schedule. :-)

Me too.
That would mean:

The ECU game is always my least favorite game of the year. Seems like most on here say the GT game, but I actually enjoy that one. It's always a nail biter, but in a good way IMO. The ECU game is always some crappy, sloppy game where we're required to score to keep up. Granted we don't always play stellar when we have the lead, but it's still usually the biggest drag of the year. And it's also a no win situation. If you lose, you lost to what most consider an average team and when you win, people yawn. I'd rather have a complete cupcake or an Alabama/Ohio State every year instead of some mid-major school that seems to always give us fits.

"It might be dark outside, but it's LeDay in here." - Jay Bilas

Exactly this. I hate playing GT as well always at least the 2d worst game of the year for me but at least that game is a conference game and matters. With ECU it's just as you say. They are dangerous enough to beat you but nobody ever thinks they should.

SOLUTION: We poach ECU's O Coordinator and set them back several years.

15

How about winner gets the ECU coordinator?

VHokie

Is that the same coordinator who botched the end of game strategy against UCF, thus losing the game?

Hmm... you might have a good idea there. It would be an upgrade at least.

Game clock management is the responsibility of the HC, not the OC. The OC is picking specific plays based on how the HC wants to manage the clock. In that situation, the HC is instructing the OC on where to call a run, pass, or go for it on 4th down. There were some execution problems as well (such as Carden taking a sack on 4th down rather than throwing the ball high into the air), which you could in part blame on the OC I suppose for not making sure Carden knew what he wanted. I pin that far more on the HC for the overall end game management though.

Game clock management is surprisingly poor at many programs. To me, this has actually been one of Tech's biggest areas of weakness for awhile. Tech has botched clock management several times just this season (e.g. ECU, GT and Duke). Against ECU we started taking timeouts too early (over 3 minutes left in the game), which ended up leaving too much time on the clock after we tied it up. Against GT, we took timeouts in a tie game when they GT was not in obvious scoring range which is a huge no no as it relieves pressure from the opposing offense. The only time you take TOs in that situation is when the offense is in "gimme" FG range and there is so little time left you won't get the ball back otherwise. Against Duke, a lot of people (rightfully) focused on the fake punt, but we also made the same exact timeout mistake as the GT game. Except this time it was even worse because we were actually up one point. When Duke missed the FG, there was still so much time left we couldn't run the clock out and unnecessarily gave them another possession (which fortunately didn't end up costing us the game).

Sorry, this turned into a longer post that I anticipated :)

Which one of us is going to leave the ACC? We have developed a great ACC rivalry with the Pirates.

ee

Uhh.....When did ECU join the ACC?

VHokie

I think it was sarcasm b/c we play them more than half of the ACC.

What is this "sarcasm" you speak of?

VHokie

Sarcasm is what UVA fans use when discussing their football program!

I am very selfishly hoping we end up in the Belk Bowl. I would seriously consider driving out for it if we do.

I would go to that.

I am selfishly hoping for the New Mexico Bowl. Or the Sun Bowl again. #TeamBurrito

Not the bagman VT deserves, but the bagman VT needs right now.

I selfishly root for the Poinsettia or Holiday Bowl (never going to happen). Hell, the Rose Bowl would be fine for me too. The day VT returns to glory and gets into the Rose Bowl as a playoff team will be sweet.

πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ

Isn't the Rose Bowl a B1G-PAC12 exclusive?

Or have things changed due to the playoffs?

On the years the Rose Bowl does not host a playoff game, they will still attempt to host a B1G/PAC-12 matchup as far as is possible. So the only real way we'd play in the Rose Bowl is to make the playoffs in a year they host it.

Got ya, that makes sense

Me too. It would be great if we ended up there. I was told by a friend (source) that the Belk bowl is trying to get ND and TENN. I am still dreaming though.

Edit: I can't reply correctly

Priority Wish List:
1. Belk/Music City vs. SEC team (not likely unless Citrus opens up to ACC)
2. Indy Bowl vs USC/aTm
3. Indy Bowl vs. UF (bad matchup for us, they are like an athletic BC)
4. Detroit Bowl vs. Illinois (worst possible B10 opponent, even NW would have been better)
5. Military Bowl vs. non-ECU Big East team
6. Military Bowl vs. ECU
7. St. Pete Bowl (I'm a Red Sox fan, so I hate the Trop with all my being)

If another bowl like the Cactus opened up, I'd slide it into #4.

I'm kinda hoping for Detroit just so I can see my two alma maters play each other. Selfish, I know.

I didn't even realize Illinois was bowl eligible. Move from Chicago and I forget all about them.

I will always have a soft spot in my heart for the thrashing the put on UVA in the Carquest Bowl one year.

"I liked you guys a lot better when everybody told you you were terrible." -Justin Fuente

From what I understand of the really confusing "Tiers" of bowls, the Citrus has opened up to the ACC unless Bama loses and also falls out of top 4.

Jack Bauer fears no one. Except Xavier Adibi.

I'm really hoping for an Independence Bowl appearance this year...against whoever (can't believe I'm saying that). I was stationed in Shreveport/Bossier previously, so I could get guaranteed free tickets and have a place to stay. Only projection I see online, though, is some crap bowl in Detroit against Illinois, ...which I'm not thrilled about, honestly. ...but we do have a pretty stunning record against B1G teams..so...

I'm hoping for Independence Bowl vs SEC. I realllllly don't want to have to play ECU yet again.

"I'm too drunk to taste this chicken" - Colonel Sanders via Ricky Bobby

Just say no to ECU fans.

Hokies United l Ut Prosim

Bowls very seldom match up teams that already played during the season, unless they are elite teams. That is certainly not the case here. If we do go to the Military Bowl, it would be against Cincinnati. You've also got to consider the Bowl people are going to want fans that come and spend the night(s) and unload money on meals, shopping, etc. The large NoVa Hokie fan base would be in & out the same day. Little revenue brought in for the area. Ticket sales are already guaranteed for a certain number of tickets (15K or so) so that wouldn't offset the lost revenue for the merchandisers in the area.

NCSU v. ECU would be an attractive Military Bowl. Good fanbases excited about their season. Easy driving distance but would need hotels. A rivalry that wasn't played this year.

The eastern half of North Carolina would love that. Like you said, easy drive, attractive locale and a natural rivalry game that would sell lots of tickets.

I'm hoping for Annapolis because we, as a fan base, have been asked to travel a lot, and Annapolis is so close to our major alumni center.

I would not ever at all want to play ECU in this bowl, however. But, if we did, then we would have played ECU more than our division opponents in the last few years.

How does your trailer hold up on these road trips?

Well enough.

Yup, pretty much a consolation bowl for us. And to help the Military Bowl out. The connection between the Cadets and the Military Bowl should be enough for them to want us, and enough for Hokies to fill the stands. (A LOT more than the Terp fans did last year...)

Independence Bowl Vs an SEC team ( Florida or Texas A&M or Tennessee or Arkansas) would be good practice preparing for the Battle of Bristol in 2016.

Allen Ox

Not sure any SEC team would be a good matchup this year, maybe UT, would rather be favored against Illinois or maybe Cincinnati. 7-6 sounds much better than 6-7

In Fuente we trust

Right on HokieBlitz. Tennessee! That would setup a possible rivalry game beginning at the Speedway. Looking down the road the teams are close enough to fill the stands, at least at Tech. Would probably fill Neyland Stadium also.

As long as we don't play Iowa, I'm fine with about anybody. Iowa would cause severe mental anguish at home.

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

Personally I would like to see Arkansas. My roommate is from Arkansas and a big fan, they are an SEC squad, they have a top notch defense, and a monster offensive line. The battles up front would be fun to see!

Sean

Based on the Miami game, I think Arkansas' offensive line would just have their way with us on the LOS. Those guys are freaking huge.

I want the Hokies to play in the Independence Bowl against the SEC. Yes, its bad if we lose but the reward for a win is worth the risk. Besides, I live only 70 miles from Shreveport. I'll be there.

I feel a bowl against an SEC team is a win-win situation if we lose they were the SEC team and we're a bottom tier ACC team this year, but if we win than we beat an SEC team to close the year and we build momentum for this young but talented squad, to be healthy and even better next year.

How is 6-7 a win-win?

It keeps the bowl streak alive, which is paramount, evidently.

I will never see us losing to an SEC team, no matter if they are an upper tier SEC team and we are a bottom tier ACC team, as a wiining situation. "Oh we lost but it was to an SEC team, so it's all good!".... fuck that

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

Wherever against anybody from the SEC. Anywhere but not against ECU.

Wow. ECU just lost on about a 50-yard hail mary...after coming back from a 26-9 deficit late in the game. Not sure how, if any, that may affect our bowl situation, but holy cow, what an ending and what terrible clock management by ECU at the end.

I watched it happen live and all I could think was "Did that just happen?!"

"The Big Ten is always using excuses to cancel games with us. First Wisconsin. Then Wisconsin. After that, Wisconsin. The subsequent cancellation with Wisconsin comes to mind too. Now Penn State. What's next? Wisconsin?" -HorseOnATreadmill

OMG I turned the channel. I thought ECU just had to run out the clock. I just watched the Hail Mary highlight but I don't understand how UCF got the ball back in the first place. Wow.

Virginian by Birth, Hokie by Choice

ECU couldn't run out the clock with UCF having one timeout. UCF got the ball with 10 seconds left and ran 2 plays

I believe situations like that are why the Safety is called a Safety... run around, run away from the D.. run all the way back to your endzone if needed. just run. out. the. clock.

Obviously someone on ECU's staff failed at math when Carden was instructed to just kneel on 1st, 2nd and 3rd downs.

YES....Even go so far as to instruct all of your players to tackle everyone on the defense to get the clock to zero. Once its there, it hardly matters if its a safety. If they take the penalty for holding on the offense, all you have to do on the next snap is kneel the ball, if they dont take the penalty the game is over.

Hey, last year is was an awesome day, sunny and between 55-60 degrees!

Now, a few years ago there was 6 inches of snow on the ground. But probably still warmer than the UVA game this year.

Are you sure?

My wife is a Marshall grad and we went. It was freezing... I remember it being warmer during the day - but it was really cold that night.

Of course, the game will be played at noon if we are picked....

The kickoff is scheduled for 1:00pm, but that still fits in our noon-1:30 window.

I was fine, to me. The pint of Evan Williams helped. But it was gorgeous before half. When the sun went down, it got a little chilly, but after the 5 years I spent in Blacksburg, it was a cake walk.

It just occured to me that this craptastic bowl is now played at Navy's field. Not in one of the three NFL of former NFL stadiums that are near by.

Wut. Da. Fleck.

Stupid ass bowl. Big East team on Navy's field.

I actually like that stadium. Yeah its old, but there is something about going in there and seeing all the naval battles. Pretty impressive. Maybe its cause I used to go to games with my friend whose father has tickets as a naval academy graduate.

I can certainly think of worse places to watch a football game.

I shouldn't complain about it, I'm not going to go anyway. You NOVA types should have some fun.

I feel sorry for the participants of the Boca Raton Bowl, which is apparently a thing that exists.

But I feel even sorrier for the participants of the New Orleans and Music City bowls. It'll be hard to sell that Fossil watch on craigslist.

Also, quit being so cheap, Rose Bowl, you're a cash cow. Quit being such a clothes horse.

They get a gift suite at all of those bowls which basically means that they get a certain number of points to pick items from the room and make their own gift bag. Or it could be picking one item from several different areas/tables.

Ohhhhh ok, my mistake.

Still makes them look cheap in the comparison table.

Depends. Some of them might have things where the players can choose if they want an Xbox, an iPad, or a PS4. Others will have digital cameras, Blu-Ray players, Apple TV, and things of that nature. It allows for a more custom experience which I think more players would prefer. And it allows them to get nicer gifts that they might need or want or could use.

I think one of the options in 2011 for the Sugar Bowl the players had a recliner option as a gift suite choice.

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

You are correct. They got something like 10 or 11 points and there liner was all but 1 point.

Great gifts for pretty average teams, whoever they end up being. That's like Christmas after Christmas, plus getting to play/practice without having to worry about grades for a few weeks. And on top of that, it's only what, a 3 hour drive from the 'Burg? Not bad at all. Plus, like many of you said, Annapolis is a really nice area. I'm sure Hokie fans would show up in bunches for that one

Never going to happen.

The final playoff ranking muddled the picture by giving the B1G an extra slot. It appears either VT UNC Pitt or Miami gets left out.

Reality has a mighty pimp hand.

I thought they muddied it by giving the Orange Bowl slot to Mississippi State. If a Big Ten team had gotten that spot, ACC would get Citrus.

All they needed to do was flip Miss and Mich States.

Starting to get nervous.
