The ECU game is always my least favorite game of the year. Seems like most on here say the GT game, but I actually enjoy that one. It's always a nail biter, but in a good way IMO. The ECU game is always some crappy, sloppy game where we're required to score to keep up. Granted we don't always play stellar when we have the lead, but it's still usually the biggest drag of the year. And it's also a no win situation. If you lose, you lost to what most consider an average team and when you win, people yawn. I'd rather have a complete cupcake or an Alabama/Ohio State every year instead of some mid-major school that seems to always give us fits.

Exactly this. I hate playing GT as well always at least the 2d worst game of the year for me but at least that game is a conference game and matters. With ECU it's just as you say. They are dangerous enough to beat you but nobody ever thinks they should.

Game clock management is the responsibility of the HC, not the OC. The OC is picking specific plays based on how the HC wants to manage the clock. In that situation, the HC is instructing the OC on where to call a run, pass, or go for it on 4th down. There were some execution problems as well (such as Carden taking a sack on 4th down rather than throwing the ball high into the air), which you could in part blame on the OC I suppose for not making sure Carden knew what he wanted. I pin that far more on the HC for the overall end game management though.
Game clock management is surprisingly poor at many programs. To me, this has actually been one of Tech's biggest areas of weakness for awhile. Tech has botched clock management several times just this season (e.g. ECU, GT and Duke). Against ECU we started taking timeouts too early (over 3 minutes left in the game), which ended up leaving too much time on the clock after we tied it up. Against GT, we took timeouts in a tie game when they GT was not in obvious scoring range which is a huge no no as it relieves pressure from the opposing offense. The only time you take TOs in that situation is when the offense is in "gimme" FG range and there is so little time left you won't get the ball back otherwise. Against Duke, a lot of people (rightfully) focused on the fake punt, but we also made the same exact timeout mistake as the GT game. Except this time it was even worse because we were actually up one point. When Duke missed the FG, there was still so much time left we couldn't run the clock out and unnecessarily gave them another possession (which fortunately didn't end up costing us the game).
Sorry, this turned into a longer post that I anticipated :)

On the years the Rose Bowl does not host a playoff game, they will still attempt to host a B1G/PAC-12 matchup as far as is possible. So the only real way we'd play in the Rose Bowl is to make the playoffs in a year they host it.

Bowls very seldom match up teams that already played during the season, unless they are elite teams. That is certainly not the case here. If we do go to the Military Bowl, it would be against Cincinnati. You've also got to consider the Bowl people are going to want fans that come and spend the night(s) and unload money on meals, shopping, etc. The large NoVa Hokie fan base would be in & out the same day. Little revenue brought in for the area. Ticket sales are already guaranteed for a certain number of tickets (15K or so) so that wouldn't offset the lost revenue for the merchandisers in the area.

NCSU v. ECU would be an attractive Military Bowl. Good fanbases excited about their season. Easy driving distance but would need hotels. A rivalry that wasn't played this year.

Right on HokieBlitz. Tennessee! That would setup a possible rivalry game beginning at the Speedway. Looking down the road the teams are close enough to fill the stands, at least at Tech. Would probably fill Neyland Stadium also.

I feel a bowl against an SEC team is a win-win situation if we lose they were the SEC team and we're a bottom tier ACC team this year, but if we win than we beat an SEC team to close the year and we build momentum for this young but talented squad, to be healthy and even better next year.

Wow. ECU just lost on about a 50-yard hail mary...after coming back from a 26-9 deficit late in the game. Not sure how, if any, that may affect our bowl situation, but holy cow, what an ending and what terrible clock management by ECU at the end.

OMG I turned the channel. I thought ECU just had to run out the clock. I just watched the Hail Mary highlight but I don't understand how UCF got the ball back in the first place. Wow.

I believe situations like that are why the Safety is called a Safety... run around, run away from the D.. run all the way back to your endzone if needed. just run. out. the. clock.
Obviously someone on ECU's staff failed at math when Carden was instructed to just kneel on 1st, 2nd and 3rd downs.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
YES....Even go so far as to instruct all of your players to tackle everyone on the defense to get the clock to zero. Once its there, it hardly matters if its a safety. If they take the penalty for holding on the offense, all you have to do on the next snap is kneel the ball, if they dont take the penalty the game is over.

They get a gift suite at all of those bowls which basically means that they get a certain number of points to pick items from the room and make their own gift bag. Or it could be picking one item from several different areas/tables.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Depends. Some of them might have things where the players can choose if they want an Xbox, an iPad, or a PS4. Others will have digital cameras, Blu-Ray players, Apple TV, and things of that nature. It allows for a more custom experience which I think more players would prefer. And it allows them to get nicer gifts that they might need or want or could use.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Love how the Military Bowl has by far the best gifts of any of these and that's where many project the Hokies to play. Seriously: an Xbox One, UA backpack, speakers, and a hat. Great gifts for pretty average teams, whoever they end up being. That's like Christmas after Christmas, plus getting to play/practice without having to worry about grades for a few weeks. And on top of that, it's only what, a 3 hour drive from the 'Burg? Not bad at all. Plus, like many of you said, Annapolis is a really nice area. I'm sure Hokie fans would show up in bunches for that one

I'd find it pretty ridiculous for them to to slight a VT program: with the winningest active head coach (and a nice bowl streak that coincides with him), that hasn't been ridden with scandal, and beat playoff-bound Ohio State.

It's a pretty nice stadium. Not too big, but not unbelievable small or anything either. It's Navy so it's pretty nice. Wouldn't recommend sitting in the end zone though, pretty bad view. Hmm... you might have a good idea there. It would be an upgrade at least.

What is this "sarcasm" you speak of?
Sarcasm is what UVA fans use when discussing their football program!

Hey, last year is was an awesome day, sunny and between 55-60 degrees!
Now, a few years ago there was 6 inches of snow on the ground. But probably still warmer than the UVA game this year.
Are you sure?
My wife is a Marshall grad and we went. It was freezing... I remember it being warmer during the day - but it was really cold that night.
Of course, the game will be played at noon if we are picked....

Also, quit being so cheap, Rose Bowl, you're a cash cow. Quit being such a clothes horse.
They get a gift suite at all of those bowls which basically means that they get a certain number of points to pick items from the room and make their own gift bag. Or it could be picking one item from several different areas/tables.
Ohhhhh ok, my mistake.
Still makes them look cheap in the comparison table.
I think one of the options in 2011 for the Sugar Bowl the players had a recliner option as a gift suite choice.
You are correct. They got something like 10 or 11 points and there liner was all but 1 point.
A boat is a boat, but the mystery box could be anything...it could even be a boat!
It wasn't a boat, Peter.
I think that's where the Costanza's moved to for retirement.
haha into del boca vista no doubt
Psssssh we all know the sun bowl has the best gifts. Hair dryers for everybody!!!
"I could use a few of these." -- Andrew Motuapuaka
Love how the Military Bowl has by far the best gifts of any of these and that's where many project the Hokies to play. Seriously: an Xbox One, UA backpack, speakers, and a hat. Great gifts for pretty average teams, whoever they end up being. That's like Christmas after Christmas, plus getting to play/practice without having to worry about grades for a few weeks. And on top of that, it's only what, a 3 hour drive from the 'Burg? Not bad at all. Plus, like many of you said, Annapolis is a really nice area. I'm sure Hokie fans would show up in bunches for that one
It's gotta be more than 3 hours. That only gets you to Culpeper.
Google maps says 4.5-5 hours, depending on route.
Unless you're going 100 or so mph.
The Beltway from 66 to 50 could take you 3 hours on certain days and times...
Officially ACC announces bowls at 1730, but will there be anyway to find out sooner or under new system is everything run solely through ACC.
After reading tweets by Hokie Beat writers I'm worried VT missing a bowl game.
Never going to happen.
The final playoff ranking muddled the picture by giving the B1G an extra slot. It appears either VT UNC Pitt or Miami gets left out.
I thought they muddied it by giving the Orange Bowl slot to Mississippi State. If a Big Ten team had gotten that spot, ACC would get Citrus.
All they needed to do was flip Miss and Mich States.
Starting to get nervous.
What conferences will not fill all of their slots?
Jerry Palm projecting us to play South Carolina in Shreveport.
Let's give that guy a hand
If Weaver were still here, he'd voluntarily decline the bowl to give our donors a break from having to attend one every year as a thank you to us all....
I think there are 76 slots and 82 teams that can go. UAB wont be going so that means 5 other teams will join UVA at home for the holidays. CBS said MTSU and Ohio wont go either. That means we need to beat out 3 others......
VT will go to a bowl.
VT fans are a lock for $.
Bitter to the rescue.
I'd find it pretty ridiculous for them to to slight a VT program: with the winningest active head coach (and a nice bowl streak that coincides with him), that hasn't been ridden with scandal, and beat playoff-bound Ohio State.
plus it isnt even about any of that. its about selling tickets. and we can sure do that
It is done - VT vs Cincinnati in Military Bowl per David teel.
Bowl Chairmen know that VT will bring it in terms of fans. That means better ratings and more money.
If an ACC team is really getting left out it should have been us. I'm happy Frank gets his 22nd bowl but we were the worst ACC bowl-eligible team. Whoever is getting left out has a right to be pissed.
To that team:

Would love to see it be Miami
ACC selection show just confirmed that no eligible ACC team will be left out. 11 plus ND, 12.
psyched to see one more game in person. anyone thats been up to that stadium have any points on it?
It's a pretty nice stadium. Not too big, but not unbelievable small or anything either. It's Navy so it's pretty nice. Wouldn't recommend sitting in the end zone though, pretty bad view. Nice open feel to it, somewhat new feel as well. If anything, it almost feels like a smaller version of the Shoe almost
cool thanks. any insight into tailgating and such?
Ha nah not really, it's been about 8 or 9 years since I've last been and I'm only a student now so I wasn't much of a tailgater at the age of 12 lol
I would love to hear some tips for this stadium. I think I finally get to go to a bowl game!
I hate to complain but I lived in PA for 11 years and we never played in a bowl nearby. Now I live in Alabama and where do we play.......sigh......
