Bud Foster Works to Silence the Rumor Mill, Scheme for Cincinnati's Passing Attack

Hokies defensive coordinator Bud Foster discusses defending the Bearcats.

[Michael Shroyer]

Internet rumors are rampant again that Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster is a target for the same position, at another school, under another prominent head coach. Texas A&M's Kevin Sumlin has been searching for a defensive coordinator since firing Mark Snyder following his team's season ending loss to LSU in which A&M gave up 384 yards rushing. Foster's turned down offers from a laundry list of head coaches in the past including Kevin Sumlin (yes, he's told him "no" once before), Jimbo Fisher, Mark Richt, Dabo Swinney and Steve Spurrier. Now, he insists his focus is squarely on Annapolis for the team's bowl game and not College Station.

"I haven't even talked to my (agent)," Foster insisted on a teleconference Wednesday.

Whether or not Texas A&M has indeed reached out to Tech's longtime defensive coordinator, Foster is staying tight lipped about the whole process.

Foster claims he hasn't even been contacted about any outside jobs so far, an assertion that seems hard to believe given his defensive track record and respectability among coaching circles, yet it's a position that seems understandable given his extensive history with the Hokies.

But if someone is indeed interested in stealing him away from his longtime home, Foster says they'll likely make their case directly.

"If anything happens, they'll come directly to me, then I'll go to (my agent) when it's all said and done," Foster said.

A future beyond Virginia Tech is a touchy subject for the head defensive Hokie these days, especially after years of speculation about change that never materialized, but Foster perks back up when it's time to talk about Cincinnati.

"They're a very talented group," Foster said. "You don't win nine games by luck."

The Hokies' Military Bowl opponents certainly do present an interesting challenge for Foster's bunch, particularly when it comes to the passing game.

"I think one of the strengths, if not the strength, of their team is the receiving corps," Foster said.

Much like the Hokies a season ago, the Bearcats don't have one single dominant receiver torching opposing defenders, but a trio of wideouts that have excelled.

Receivers Mekale McKay, Shaq Washington and Chris Moore have combined for more than half of the team's total receiving yards this season, compiling 1,921 yards among them. Fellow WRs Max Morrison and Johnny Holton aren't far behind, however, combining for another 876 yards.

But Foster notes that little of their excellence would be possible without the abilities of trigger man Gunner Kiel.

"Obviously their quarterback can get it to them," Foster said. "I've been impressed with how he hangs in the pocket, he hangs in there, he'll throw it to his third or fourth guy. He just knows where they are."

Yet Kiel isn't the only Bearcats quarterback Foster has to worry about containing. The impeccably named Munchie Legaux had his way with the Hokies' defense two years ago, throwing for 376 yards and three scores, and he's seen a fair amount of time in relief of Kiel this year.

"Munchie Legaux, he played against us a couple years ago and he's come in and played quite a bit for Gunner Kiel," Foster said. "They make some plays all the way around."

No matter which quarterback has been under center for Cincinnati this year, they've enjoyed solid protection from the offensive line. They've only allowed 16.0 sacks all year long, a mark that puts them tied for 22nd nationally, a feat that reminds Foster of Tech's earlier matchup with Duke.

"I think they're more talented at receiver than Duke is, but I say they're similar from the standpoint that they're second to Duke in the amount of minus yard plays they give up," Foster said. "That's a combination of the quarterback getting rid of the football and not taking sacks."

Luckily for the Hokies, they'll have the services of linebacker Chase Williams (and his 3.5 sacks and 16 quarterback hits) at their disposal for the second straight game after he missed a month's worth of contests with a knee injury.

"He worked extremely hard to get back," Foster said. "It just makes a statement that the kid wants to play."

Williams' return is all the more impressive for the fact that he's not auditioning for a future role with the team, or even an NFL job. As a redshirt senior with just a handful of games starting, the Military Bowl is likely Williams' last contest of his career, but Foster is certainly glad he worked his way back to make the start.

"It's good to have him back," Foster said. "That's not to take anything away from the Motuapuaka kid because I think he's a heck of a football player, but at the same time Chase has had a not a good senior year, but a great senior year, and it's shown in his performance."

It might not come as much of a surprise that the bowl could be Williams' last time on the field as a Hokie, but it could also end up being defensive end Dadi Nicolas' final time in the orange and maroon if he heads off to the NFL.

Nicolas submitted his paperwork for an evaluation by the NFL Advisory Board last week, and while he insists he won't leave unless he's graded a first or second prospect, the possibility still exists that his days in Blacksburg are numbered.

"If he's going to be a first or second round guy, and I don't know if that's the case, it's hard not to support him if that's what he wants to do," Foster said. "But if he's not...it's going to be in his best interest to stay."

But even if Foster wants him to spend another year in school, he certainly understands why he's a tempting pro prospect.

"He has tremendous upside at the next level...he's got some special qualities physically," Foster said. "But whatever he decides we're going to support him 100 percent, but at the same time, if he asks our advice we're going to have his best interests at heart."

No matter what he decides, Dadi will take the field in Annapolis, and with Williams and Nicolas at the ready to provide the pass rush, the Hokies' defensive backs will have to focus on locking down the Bearcats' deep stable of receivers.

Foster is aware of just how lucky the Hokies are to have Kendall Fuller to assist them in that task.

"He's a lockdown guy," Foster said. "Last year he played a lot of different spots for us, this year he was primarily our boundary corner. And our boundary corner is a guy, you know our history, that's one of our best football players, if not our best, on the perimeter."

Fuller's made another All-America list, this time earning third team honors from the AP, and Foster says it's no surprise he's been so good, so quickly.

"This kid, coming in the door, he may be the sharpest kid from a football IQ and understanding standpoint (we've had) from day one," Foster said. "He works at it every day, there's never a time when he feels like he's arrived and he's accomplished and you respect him for that...that's why he's an all-league guy coming in the door."

Armed with the necessary pieces to stop the Bearcats, all Foster has to do now is take advantage of the team's copious bowl prep period to scheme for Cincinnati.

He says the team started installing their game plan for the Bearcats on Monday, and the staff has been running the young group through plenty of practice sessions to get them comfortable with it.

"Going into this game, we'll have practiced more than probably any bowl game here recently," Foster said. "We've got a lot of kids back for next season...and we've got a great opportunity in this bowl game to grow as a defense."

But the number of practices hasn't been the only thing different about this year's bowl preparations. Frank Beamer hasn't been on the practice field while recovering from throat surgery, but Foster says his return is imminent.

"Frank has been doing very well," Foster said. "He's been game planning and progressing and he's going to be out to practice here real soon."

He doesn't have much time left to get back out there, with the bowl game just over a week away, but Foster says the Hokies have been coping just fine in his absence so far.

"I think we've had some of our best practices of the year defensively," Foster said. "And I know it's an important bowl game for how we feel in the offseason, going in with momentum."

Good! I'm more worried about Cincinnati than Texas A&M

He will remain silent on the Pitt subject until he gets his bonus. I hope as much as all of you that he does not indeed finally make a move to a HC job that isn't for us, but its possible. My friend who is Pitt alum was telling me that a LOT of talk about stealing him is going on. Their only worry is that he is and always will be a Virginia Tech man, and Beamer is not going to be around much longer. So its much more unlikely that he leaves than if they offered him back when he previously was looking into the job.

My friend who is Pitt alum was telling me that a LOT of talk about stealing him is going on.

Aggie fans were saying the same thing last week.

And many Hokie fans were saying last week that Bud was going to sign a contract extension with a HUGE pay increase last week.

The whole conversation of Bud not being directly contacted by any other school is pointless, as schools stopped contacting a coach directly well over a decade ago. Every coach that has an agent (which is nearly every coach, even coordinators) is NEVER contacted directly. The school contacts the agent, who goes through the preliminaries with them.

Bud could be close to signing with A&M as DC, he could be close to signing with Pitt as HC, he could be close to signing an extension with VT. What we do know is that nothing will happen prior to Bud receiving his annuity the first part of January. Then we will see what happens. The only thing that would change that timetable is if Frank Beamer announced his retirement before then. Otherwise, we won't know about Bud until the annuity check clears the bank.

My point was not that there is any clarity on the situation, just that everybody is saying what is in their favor. Aggie fans said last week he was going to College Station. Not Pitt fans say he's headed to coach in the Ketchup Stadium. Hokie fans will all say he's staying. Whatever helps give you confidence about your team, you will say.

Totally agree on that!

You're comparing VT fans reacting to multiple reasonably credible sources and "my friend who is a Pitt alum"?

I'm comparing those certain Bud is staying to those certain Bud is leaving. The supposedly reliable sources both relied on seem to have been wrong in their timetables at the very least. As mentioned above, everyone is spinning it the direction they feel most appropriate.

Right now Bud/his agent are just going back and forth to finalize things on his extension. He's been on the road recruiting, which is why nothing substantial has happened there in the past week or so. Whit's on top of it.
#Whitness

Early last week the supposed word was that everything was already finalized on the extension and that all it needed was Bud's signature, which was going to come as soon as he returned to town last week. No need for further finalizing, just Bud's signature, that's it. Bud's been at the practices, so he's been in town. Yet he's not signed the extension, which would certainly stop the distraction of the media asking him about other jobs, etc.

It wouldn't surprise me one bit if there was a little back and forth going on. Besides, I'm sure Bud's got more pressing issues right now (recruiting and bowl prep) and finalizing numbers on money he won't even see for another couple months.

I hope your right. I was hoping that would be talk about a signed extention by now. But right now...I like your optimism.

Yeah, I think this hits the nail on the head. His denials do nothing for me because I can't believe nobody has contacted him. That is an unbelievable statement, thus, the rest of his statements don't hold much value on the subject.

Sign the extension already.

This. I don't believe that he hasn't been contacted. If anything, he's the most sought after DC in college football right now...

If anything, these comments just made me more anxious...

How do we know there is even an extension to be signed? Because 'experts' on another message board told us there was? Would those be the exact same 'experts' who told us Bud was signing that extension last week? It seems that perhaps the 'experts' weren't exactly as clued in as they liked to promote.

Based on those 'experts', the extension had been waiting on Bud for a few days when the 'secret' was tossed out by them. Yet, more than a week after the 'experts' put out this info, there is nothing to suggest there is an extension to be signed. Except those 'experts' saying so.

Maybe there is an extension. Maybe not. But if Bud is still as doggedly loyal as he has always been in the past, he would have signed the supposed extension. Don't use the - 'He's just sooo busy prepping for Cincy that he hasn't had time' excuse, because his agent would be the one who would review it, then provide him with the overall picture. That doesn't take very long to finish. There is a reason Bud hasn't signed with anyone, including VT. We just won't know the answer for at least another week.

He'll sign the extension once he's had time to sit down and do a little back-and-forth with Whit on it.

Well,... we still have him and he's committed to beating Cincinnati - as the ol cliche goes - just have to take it one day at a time.

going to be interesting to see what happens after he pockets that annuity.

Every second counts

I believe he is one hundred percent going to pocket the money he deserves from us first before he makes any moves or decisions (or at least that is what seems obviously logical in his situation). My worry is this, if he has this rumored extension sitting on the table from Tech and he was content on staying here, why wouldn't he have signed it already? The fact that he hasn't signed an extension with us yet (assuming there is one to sign), means he is at least going to listen and entertain outside offers first, which of course has me losing sleep at night.

I think there's a lot going on behind the scenes. SPECULATION ALERT (I don't usually do this, but I wanted to share something I haven't seen mentioned):

Moorehead tweeted the other day how much he loves being at VT and working with the other coaches. Someone responded saying something to the effect of "that usually means you'll be looking for a new job." Moorehead tweeted back "actually it's the exact opposite." Makes me think there's stuff going on for the assistants (raises? extensions?), and perhaps the coordinators, and we'll hear about it all at once. It would be a PR nightmare (I think) to start announcing any individual moves on coordinators or assistants, because in between there would be all sorts of consternation about anyone who hadn't been mentioned yet. We'll hear everything at once - extensions, raises, etc. And it will likely become clear only after the bowl game; no one wants to distract from that (at least publicly). So right now, Bud's talking the company line, and that's fine. I've been worried about him leaving for the better part of a decade.

"Exit light..."

^^^ This is what I have been thinking. Although I've not felt the need to add to the speculation, but I'm glad you did and happy to know I'm not the only one thinking this. If I'm not mistaken, and I'm sure someone will tell me if I'm wrong, ;-), but didn't extensions and raises for Bud's assistants come up last time Bud's new contract was due? Why wouldn't it be the same this time? Bud and Beamer come across to me as TEAM players, meaning they're not out just to benefit themselves, but the team as a whole. Again, just my 2cents.

"I don't know what a Hokie is, but God is one of them." L Corso

You are probably right. It took forever for them them announce staff changes in 2012.

Exactly.

Hey, that was my friend doing that! I told AMo not to mind the pessimist, so we'll be fine there.

I know I've posted this twice already, but I feel the burning need to say it again, since I've seen the same question asked over and over and over again: "Why hasn't Bud signed the alleged extension yet?" The short answer is that he simply hasn't had time. He's been on the road recruiting and now preparing for the bowl game. Sometime soon, he and Whit and his agent will sit down and haggle over the finishing touches. Whit has already committed to paying Bud "SEC money," so I think it's pretty darn unlikely that Bud skips town any time soon.

It is also possible they are waiting till after the 1st of the year to sign the extension and raise for business purposes?(taxes, state job, accounting reasons) I am not sure how things work as far as staffing for the school but I know my company asked the govt to hold off on officially awarding our new contract until Jan 1 for "business reasons". Just a guess but it could be part of it.

I firmly believe Whit would offer him some sort of new incentive, be it a similar concept or just overall raise 1. because he deserves it 2. because he wants to keep him around.

The contracts are based on the fiscal year, which differs from the calendar year. Besides, an extension wouldn't change his current salary until the first of the fiscal year. It's calendar related, but not in the way you intended. Bud's getting his January annuity before anything else is announced. The only exception is a public statement by Frank about his retirement.

FWIW, the leave calendar for state employees rolls over on Jan. 10

I live in the Pittsburgh area and Bud's name is not coming up on the sports talk shows or the local papers.

Doesn't matter if it's cake or pie as long as it's chocolate.

Pitt hit the reset button when they fired their AD Steve Pederson. It would be logical that they would hire an AD first, then that new AD would hire a football coach.

One of the local talk show hosts was lobbying for hiring the coach first because everyone know the Head Football Coach actually runs the athletic department anyway; so let him pick his own AD.

Not sure I agree with that logic except for a few .guys like Saban

I'm in Pittsburgh too and I agree, there has been no talk about Bud Foster coming to Pitt. I'd like it to stay that way.

Do random Pittsburghers care about Pitt? I always thought it would be more of a pro sports town.

There are no Pitt fans. Well, Mark May.

Some Pitt grads came about PItt; but most people are not Pitt fans. More Penn State fans in Pittsburgh than Pitt fans.

But everyone is a Steelers fan.

People, I have sources that tell me he'll be the next WVU AD. I'm sure this makes perfect sense to all.

That was kind of my thought as well. What year of eligibility is he on? 7?

If only he had a younger brother named Hokie Legaux. Just imagine yelling his name in the stands at Lane stadium...
