Virginia Tech Defensive Coordinator Bud Foster's Emotional Post-Game Military Bowl Interview

"This is home."

[Mark Umansky]

Hokies defensive coordinator Bud Foster spoke with IMG network analyst Mike Burnop following Virginia Tech's 33-17 win over Cincinnati in the Military Bowl. It's 2:56 long and you should list to every second. The most interesting football thing Bud mentioned was Tech's 3-man defensive line wrinkle which TKP will review. Towards the end, Bud got emotional discussing his new contract (is that enough confirmation for TexAgs?) and Frank Beamer. He stated definitively, "This is home".

Thanks to TKP alumni and Sports Broadcaster for High Point University (NC) Kevin Burke for passing along the video.

Seems he even accepts lil Beamer as potential HC too.

Damn near teared up while driving hearing His post game interview. Got to meet Bud at the Richmond hokie club night he was at a few years ago great person to talk with. You can hear how much his players, Frank Beamer and VT mean to him. Bud Foster is VT.

How could you not want to play football for this man? I doubt there is another coach out there who puts more heart and soul into his team than Coach Foster. We're more than fortunate to have his will and dedication on our staff. To all those thinking he was headed to greener pastures, I'll just say he's liking the grass in Blacksburg. GO Hokies!!!

Hokie for life!!!

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

Okay, so...

I get some occasional flack when I tell people my son's middle name is Foster. They kind of roll their eyes, like, oh you're one of those fans. Because there are tons of diehard lunatics who will name a child after a coach or player. Uberdouche Lane Kiffin named his firstborn child Knox to ingratiate himself with the Tennessee fanbase. (How's that playing out in Tuscaloosa, Lane?)

I have no doubt one day my son is going to ask me why he's named after a football coach at my alma mater. And when he does, I'm going to tell him it has absolutely nothing to with football. I'm going to tell him I chose to give him that middle name because I think Bud Foster is a good example of how I think my son should live his life.

Find something you love to do, and do it with people you respect and love to work with. Do it with passion and enthusiasm. Celebrate your successes unabashedly, and take failures not as something to be ashamed of but as challenges to be overcome and problems to be fixed. Don't worry about money so long as you and your family are provided for, even if some people do the same job for more money. Chances are they aren't enjoying it as much as you are.

Find your home. Stay there, even when others think you should follow the dangled carrot up the ladder of "success." Even when people insinuate that by remaining, you are proving that you will never, and could never, be successful at the "next level."

Do what you love with all your heart, surrounded by people you love and respect, and you will never work a day in your life.

To hell with football. That's why I named my son after Bud Foster.

Epic. One of the best comments I've ever read on TKP.

“I hope that they’re not going to have big eyes and pee down their legs so to speak,” -- Bud Foster

This is the coolest thing I've heard in a long time!
Wow

Great comment, and dead-on. This is why I don't get upset about all the recruiting "misses". The kind of players we "need", that come in and truly represent VT - they see the honesty, integrity and ethos in Bud , and in the entire staff. I'm sure some see that and know that they will (1) be pressed to perform at their peak; (2) be seen as equal to the non-scholarship walk-on; and (3) have to earn a starting spot no matter how many stars Rivals gives them. I'm sure some see that, see the family, and for their own reasons choose to go elsewhere. I'm equally sure that we meet some prospects, and decide not to aggressively pursue them for the same reason -they won't fit in with the family.

Virginia Tech is, above all else - a family. I think it's great that you named your son after everyone's favorite Uncle.

And no surprise there, it's Wally Lancaster with an airball that looked gorgeous on its way to nowhere...

And the coaches never give up on a guy.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

THIS X 1000. So very well stated.

"Welcome to the terror dome!"

Exactly. This is what it's all about. My hat's off to you, sir. And this is also why the "Rich Rods" and the other fly-by-night, dump-this-place-for-the-next paycheck coaches have no place in the Hokie family.....'cause they don't give a damn about values and family. Great comments, sir.

Long live Rasche Hall

There should be occasions when a poster can receive more than one leg. Absolutely great post.

When my son was born in 1997, I was a huge fan of Kentucky basketball.
I named my son after their head coach at the time (first name)

Worst decision of my life and it has made life pretty tough for him being named Tubby....

VHokie

Should've gone with Orlando (his real first name). /sarcastica

On a more serious note, Tubby is a great person and is respected everywhere he's been. I hope your son knows what an honor it is to be carrying his name.

I think his interview is a testament to the man CFB is. For Bud to break down on camera like that talking about the head man shows you how much he respects and loves him. For those of us on the outside we think of it as being their job, its obvious that for some its more like a way of life.

Tyrod did it Mikey, Tyrod did it!!

Listening to the interview, it just shows you how passionate this man is about his work, his players, his fellow coaches and the entire Hokie Nation. I have had the pleasure of knowing Bud for over 20 years and I am happy to see that the new administration locked Bud up for the next 5 years. Blacksburg is his home and this is his team.

no bud, don't get soft now, we need you to (almost) knock billy hite over

there ain't a damn thing soft about Bud Foster

"Our job as coaches is to influence young people's lives for the better in terms of fundamental skills, work ethic, and doing the right thing. Every now and again, a player actually has that effect on the coaching staff." Justin Fuente on Sam Rogers

A few years ago, Bud got so excited over a defensive stop after the offense failed the team yet again that he ran down the sideline, almost knocking Billy Hite down in the process.

Wait, what?

Missed that. Thanks.

That was excellent. How could you be in your right mind and not want to play for that man?

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

I was walking behind Mike as Bud was tearing up. I'm fairly certain seeing Bud tear up in person is like seeing a Unicorn.
