Seriously, do all media guys have a thing for Thursdays? You, Bitter, Teel... no one with media credentials has a good thing to say about Fridays. Beyond me.

I went back and looked at comments from when our schedule was announced prior to the 2013 season when we first didn't get a Thursday night game. What's beyond me is that we were pissed off then, but now? No big deal. I don't get it.
We will beat in to the ground the traditions of Virginia Tech but when one of those traditions - Thursday night - is taken away we act like we don't even care.
It is possible to not adore every move that gets made involving Tech and to be upset at something that happens with the program.

The thing with this year is that we lost our Thursday night game and had it replaced by something that, for the average fan/sports-enthused student, is far superior. Guaranteed night game, no class/work the next day, easy to spend the whole weekend visiting Blacksburg/recovering, etc. Friday beats the crap out of Thursday for every reason other than the difficulty of scheduling official visits that day and sentimental value.

I don't care about Thursdays. Take 'em or leave 'em. But encroaching on the Friday night turf of high school football is a bad trend. I don't care if it's one week. And playing games on that night specifically prohibits a large number of the people you're trying to impress (the high school players) from watching. I'm sure the fans don't mind. It's probably better for them. But for coaches and players, I don't think it's a good thing.
As for us media types, we just show up wherever they tell us the free food is. Doesn't matter what day of the week it is.

This is the one area I think the anti-Friday crowd has a valid point. I don't like competing with the high school level, for the same reason I didn't like it when the NFL started playing on Thursdays. The higher level is gonna win, to the detriment of the lower level.
As for the recruiting aspect, in this day and age if something memorable happens at a Friday game, recruits will see it on Vine, YouTube, WatchESPN or even on a goof old fashioned television set. Not being able to have official visits straight sucks, but there are five other games to host recruits.
Ideally, like I said somewhere else, I'd like to see Friday games happen only in November, when a lot of high school football is either over or playing playoff games on Saturday. (And maybe on Labor Day weekend.) But as long as Whit is right and we're able to rotate out of Friday games for a while and make them an occasional occurrence, I think we can use the national exposure and lack of competition for ratings by other football games in exactly the same way we originally used Thursday games once upon a time.

How many SEC teams have Thursday night games? They kicked off the college football season with A&M vs USCe as well as a Vandy home game, but after that, their Thursday night games consisted of Auburn playing an away game against Kansas St., a Thanksgiving night Mizzou vs Arkansas and that's it. Next year, they have 3 games on Thursday nights, one of which is the neutral site UNC vs USCe game. So we should just go ahead and not do Thursday night games either so we can compete against SEC schools for recruits better. /s

But one night doesn't make any difference to a HS kid. If you are talking about the 100+ kids with VT offers, of which 15 of them may be available for any home game, seems like a pretty small sample to try to please. For. One. Night. We're not saying play every game on Friday nights, but it's once. It's not a big deal.
It seems the fans who are complaining about Friday nights aren't doing so from a HS recruit perspective, but from a "Friday Nights Are Big East Football Nights!" or something. Like Oregon doesn't play on Friday nights.
Scheduling is meant to provide fans the best opportunities to enjoy the game (night games=better tailgating, Friday's=easier travel than Thursdays) and for those who don't attend, games that are on major networks with good production value and good commentators (read: anything but ACC game of the week). To me, a Friday night game on ESPN is better than anything other than a Saturday night game on ESPN. And 85% of those go to the SEC.
We flipped a home Thursday night game for a home Friday night game. Hardly seems to warrant any whining at all.

Thursday is dead for college football. Unfortunately the NFL started this chain reaction and the low man on the totem pole is ultimately going to have to adjust.

Have to disagree - the NCSU Friday night game is highlight of the home schedule besides OSU in my opinion. Like many have stated on the other threads, Friday is turning into another Thursday. I loved the atmosphere at the UVA Friday game this season, even with it being during Thanksgiving Break and after the worst game in VT football history.

But the hardest prolonged stretch that I saw belongs to Virginia, which closes the season vs. Georgia Tech, at Miami, at Louisville, vs. Duke and vs. Virginia Tech.
