Virginia Tech Football Recruiting: 2016 QB Logan Byrd Decommits

A member of #Sandman16 is looking elsewhere.

Quarterback Logan Byrd of Kathleen, Ga.'s Veterans high school announced on Twitter this afternoon that he opened up his recruitment.

The 2016 3-star prospect committed to Virginia Tech on September 13, 2014.

"Why wait?" Byrd told The Key Play's Alex Koma after he committed. "When you get the right feeling about a school, you know they really like you, you have to jump on that opportunity."

It's unclear why he decided to look at other opportunities. At the time of his commitment, Byrd's head coach seemed surprised he made a decision so early in the process.

"I had no idea he was going to commit this early, I thought he'd wait until the spring," said David Bruce, the head coach and athletic director at Veterans. "He told me right before he did it. He had other schools he liked, but I guess that's just a sign of how much they impressed him."

And remember, Byrd's commitment came before 2015 signal caller Dwayne Lawson verballed and subsequently signed with Tech. And Byrd committed well before the Hokies hired Lawson's high school offensive coordinator, Max Warner, to its staff.

Either way, Beamer Co. has previously stated they would like to sign one quarterback in each recruiting class, and it's rare for a player to decommit, then recommit to the same school.

Bye Bye Birdie

Some people spend their entire life wondering if they made a difference, Marines don't have that problem

Yeah, I was wondering when that was going to happen.

Too bad, of all of Loeffler's QB recruits, he looked the best in a lot of ways. He looked like a Durkin with passing skills.

2016 4-star QB Dwayne Haskins seems to have taken notice of the Byrd news.

This was my first thought when I read the title. Opens the door for Haskins!

Very interesting.

UMD and OSU have the lead on him it looks like. Would love to steal him from either.

either that or he likes chickens and googly eyes from vermont

I swear, players start looking younger and younger to me each year.

I think this photo was taken when they played on the USA U15 team together...a few years ago.

Wasn't O'Donnell's commitment speculated on last week? He seems committed here which I love.

I bleed orange and maroon.

Does this mean we get Jawon Pass now?

He's one "a" away from the all name team.

Excellent Spice girls reference.
And I never thought I would say that.

I don't blame Byrd for decommitting...with Lawson signing here AND having his OC becoming a member of our staff doesn't bode well for him in terms of early playing time...good luck to the young man in his future endeavors

not transferring, decommiting

fixed

Every school has playing time issues. We certainly don't have the type of QB talent on hand that should scare off QB recruits. Even with Lawson's HS coach on board, he's not unbeatable. I wouldn't list Lawson today as the next QB after Brewer.

Logan has to do whats best for his future. I cant say im surprised. He decommitted early enough to give Loeffler enough time to go after Dwyane Haskin or another decent QB willing to compete .

not surprised at all, actually saw this coming a long time ago

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

Yeah, I don't find this surprising either. Its still disappointing though, I liked what I saw on his highlight vids. If we don't get a QB this cycle, I think it betters our chances to get the two top QB recruits from VA in 2017.

Does this mean he's not a Dude anymore?

TJ Millweard and Patrick Dosh say hello, Mr Byrd

That Dosh comment hits close to home, was in his class at Benedictine. Highs and lows when he committed and then decommitted.

and then did nothing as a college football player...

Didn't he end up playing LB at JMU or something like that?

Apparently he ended up as a back-up LB at ECU. What a long strange road.

-Hunter Carpenter (probably)

He went to ECU as a FB, then LB then TE then back to FB/LB.

after all the apocalypse type talk on the Millweard decommit, Millweard has transferred to Kansas where he is 2-3 for 14 yds in getting blownout mop up duty as a soph.

it's far worse than that...didn't he decommit from us to Arizona State, then decommit to UCLA and somehow ended up at Kansas? what a long road his college career has been, like the Nakhtar N'Diaye of college football-I seem to remember that guy playing for three different teams at the NCAA tournament. apologies for the old reference.

I was curious and took a quick look. Came up with this: Left UCLA fall of 2013

Wait a 17 year old changed his mind?! Get out of town!

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:

Pretty much sums up my days on TKP lately.

Honestly, when you consider all the other QBs we have in the fold, and the likelihood that Lawson is being groomed to be the next VT 4 year starter, I can't really blame Byrd for backing out.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

With a redshirt this coming year he will likely only be a 2 year starter if he has any kind of success, the seems to be the trend nowadays... :(

Just committed to UNC in case anyone was wondering

He will loathe that decision in so many ways, but especially when he runs into the VT defense.
