Bud spoke glowingly of the place on Monday night. Said you can place Rector inside this.

This has to be the nicest in the country right?

Go visit Oregon and Alabama lemme know what you think then

I just sit on my couch and b*tch. - HokieChemE2016

Having only seen them in a virtual sense and not in person, I'm honestly not as impressed with them as I expected to be. When it comes to entire athletic facilities, yes, but just this one feature in not so sure.

I've been to Oregon's, and trust me it's second to none and I'd say the best in the country. All their facilities are state of the art. Ours will be nice, but not as nice in my opinion.

PDXHokie

From the pictures, VT's looks nicer to me than Oregon's and Bama's from the outside and the inside.

VT's has a higher, more curved ceiling, catwalks for viewing, better natural lighting, scoreboard, etc.

Auburn's looks nicer than either Oregon's or Bama's to me, but still not as nice as VTs.

What's cool about ours is that it's one of the tallest indoor facilities and it is also very much attuned to Tech's unique architecture scheme which makes it really appealing.

I am the heartbeat of Blacksburg. A fortress built out of stone but made with champions.

The architecture really is great. It keeps the theme of the university in mind.

Michigan is the only one that I think is even close to as nice as ours

West Virginian by birth, Hokie by choice

Just seems weird that a few inches of material is enough to protect from the concrete.

I looked inside right before the Spring game and it was dirt then.

@AMB4VT

It looks like its some sort of sand or dirt. You can see the tire tracks in it. I am curious what type of base they use.

VT '10 #AllMaroonEverything

I can't speak for the indoor football players, but having played much indoor soccer, I can attest that it is not much protection. It hurts to fall down.

Leonard. Duh.

Also if it is the field turf with the rubber pellets, there is usually an inch or 2 of the rubber pellets that will offer some cushion.

That's not concrete, you can see the tire tracks from equipment. Probably stone dust.

That field is much smaller than what I was thinking it would be.
I'm not sure how the whole team can practice on that.

That's just the starter sod. Once the weather gets warmer, and they start watering it, that shit spreads like crazy.

Leonard. Duh.

Chia Field?

A lot thinner field than expected.
I guess they plan to abandon the jet sweep. Brewer will need to get better at throwing over the middle as well.

I wonder how it compares to the field at Rector, that certainly felt at times like there wasn't much underneath

As someone who got slammed ass first onto the floor of Rector, I can assure you there is not a lot on top of concrete.

Took this pic right before the Spring game.

@AMB4VT

I didn't make my way over there, but sitting in the West Stands I did notice how huge the place is. I think it'll help hold in the noise on that end of the field.

I happened to come in that way through the woods. It is HUGE!
Pic doesn't really do it justice.

@AMB4VT

I hope you didn't touch any of the trees as you came through the woods.

No, of course not...

@AMB4VT

C'mon now, guys. Everybody knows trees are for huggin'!

Edit: Full disclosure here. I went for a cheap joke, but while I didn't get involved in the controversy, I was all for preserving that woods. Loved walking through those trees in the 60's and into the '00s, and would have thought it a bit short sighted to send them the way of one of the few on campus golf courses in the country... Yeah we needed to grow, but I could see the reason for the dialogue. While I enjoy my books, newspapers and cannot imagine a world without toilet paper, I probably could qualify as at least a borderline tree hugger myself.

If I lived in the neighborhood and was upset by the developers decision to cut the tree down, then I would wait until they're about to finish the house they're building and then start doing everything I could to drop the property value of the lot. Tow a couple junk cars into my front lawn, paint my house an ugly color, let my grass grow really long, play loud music and/or rent a jack hammer, put up some kind of big sign, maybe even go so far as to hang a WVU flag outside. Most of these are relatively inexpensive and temporary, and the house painting can be replaced with cheaper, more easily remedied means like affixing tarps or pieces of sheet metal to your house/roof to make it look more rundown.

Nothing a molotov cocktail can't fix.

*Not advocating arson. I am advocating better legislating on the part of the city. You gotta make those historical designations water tight via Land Development Code or some other means. But the lawyers were right, you can't amend an ordinance via resolution. But the judge should have made a better decision if he could have. Something tells me Mr. Deep Pockets Developer was delivering "pies" to the judges' house.

Just an observation here, but if this guy is staking out in his SUV then why does he need camo. I don't think it helps him blend well with the leather interior.

No, the judge's job is to be impartial.
he ruled according to the law so, I doubt there were any payoffs involved.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

A WVU flag outside? rogue, I think you've gone too far there.

I like the way you operate.

"I liked you guys a lot better when everybody told you you were terrible." -Justin Fuente

In reply to no one in particular.

A better resolution would have been to actually purchase the property the tree sits on or purchase the rights to the tree from the owner.

Just deciding that somebody else's tree is something you enjoy and therefore demanding they allow you to enjoy it is unreliable and already lowers the value of the property it sits on.

If you want the tree to remain, then buy it.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Yeah just driving by it everyday going to classes and meetings makes it look huge. I was also impressed by how fast it went up since the beginning of the school year.

I am the heartbeat of Blacksburg. A fortress built out of stone but made with champions.

This is huge. A state of the art indoor facility goes a long way for a not so perfect weather school

Is the turf the last phase?

Im sure there are still some interior finishes, signage, and punchlist items that they will be doing up until end milestone.

And if course let's not forget the christening ceremony with the initial tackling of the quarterback

Looks almost big enough to fit Teller and Settle.

yeah it's too bad it's not big enough for Hodges

Onward and upward

Perhaps there is time for some kind of retractable moonroof change order for Hodges.

There is a precedent for guys like him.

You folks and your hyperbole. I absolutely believe Bucky will fit in there, although I suspect his hair might brush the ceiling.

I also have a picture during construction. All the windows except for the ones near the coaching platform are a translucent FRP - they're not see through. The clearance from the field to the top of the barrel arch is the highest of any indoor practice facility.

I like it. They can have all the west coast guys, we can take the east coast, and we'll split Texas. Sounds like a plan.

Just found these online, which appear to be taken just before the substrate was fully leveled and the turf was laid down. I've included a few samples here, but check out the source link for some more good ones. I was worried when they changed to the polycarbonate panels instead of glass that the quality of the interior would suffer, but it's still a really nice room.

It’s later than you think.

Ok question for designers and engineers in the building. The sliding class garage doors, was there no way for the track for them not to stick out over the windows?

Hey sorry, I saw you asked this before.

Short answer: Yes. I do find it curious that they are stuck out like that. It would not be my first choice, but I would need to see the drawings more in depth to know why they chose to do it so.

I would think that side sliding operable doors would be the most efficient speed wise and load bearing wise. I can see these breaking down mechanically after a few years. Anyway, if anyone on the project has some inside info would love to know the reason myself.
