I think once the stadium reaches "Jet-Engine" decible levels it is tough to discern when exactly it might have been louder. I was there that day, but Fullers blocked punt return for a TD rocked my eardrums as well. Ditto the entire Miami 2003 game.

That Miami team was probably the best of all-time. And we were basically the only team that had a chance to beat them, with a horrible quarterback to boot. I miss those smash mouth days, that was real Virginia Tech football. That was what put us on the map.

Too many what-ifs: What if Vick was out there destroying ankles and hearts like he did every other game when healthy. What if Wilford held on (the initial reaction was that he caught it), most fans didn't see the drop until the replay. Would we have been able to beat them if we had tied it up, guess that will be up for debate.

I was there that day, and like many of the rest of you, will never forget the blocked punt/insane-Skipper-going-off-next-to-your-ears level of noise that followed. Also from where I was sitting, it looked like Wilford caught the ball initially. Such a huge swing of emotions.

I was too with a friend who is an tOSU fan....he still says nothing compares. Where we were sitting, we couldn't see the drop....it was honestly a full minute later for the news to filter through the stands that it wasn't caught.

I havn't watched that 2 point missed opportunity in a long time. I love Wilford, but that might be one of those worst gags in Hokie history. Noel who was awful that entire game put that ball exactly where it needed to be for him to make a play.

Love the quote about VT being a tough breed. Hopefully they get back to the blue-collar kick-ass style; which has been lacking lately.

Speak for yourself.
This would have been a more accurate assessment in 2001.
VT was only two years removed from going to the NC game. Hardly a afterthought program.
If you never have, read the Foxsports.com article linked in Andy's article.
I have never heard Lane louder than when Manning scooped up the blocked punt. And that was during the construction of the South end zone.
Yes. It was like a giant mosh pit. I remember getting elbowed in the head by some guy behind me and seeing stars.
My dad was down for the game in 2001. At the time he was 54 and had had 7 knee surgeries dating back to his days playing college baseball.
I remember after that scoop and score on the blocked punt seeing him jumping up and down in the stands like a mad man along with all of us.
One of my favorite Hokie memories.

Big East football.

I'm not usually a fan of 'one-up-ing' but I'm all for it if the SEC is being one-up-ed.
well played
In this case it was more of a 17-upping.
Grant Noel's QB stats that day....
