ECU games and nooners aside, he helped the Hokies turn into the great athletic department they are now. Rest in peace, Jim, glad you're not suffering anymore.

I knew his health was bad, but I had absolutely no idea it was that bad. This sucks.

Sorry to hear of his passing. He did a lot for Virginia Tech in his tenure. My thoughts and prayers with his family.
Wow, I knew he retired for health reasons, but that was a quick decline. RIP Weaver.
That was my thought as well. More fuel on my retire-as-soon-as-I-can fire. He definitely left his mark on the AD and will be remembered for growing our athletics up to the P5 level.
May he be remembered for all that he did to further Virginia Tech Athletics. He kept us running in the black. He furthered our athletic facilities with the new football locker room and the Hahn-Hurst Basketball Facility. He led the remodel of Lane Stadium. He handled the concept of the new indoor practice facility. Weaver led us into the ACC. He served us well and his legacy will live on.

I don't mean to be the materialistic weasel of this group, but does anyone know how this will affect the money VT owed him when he retired? Is Tech still obligated to pay his next-of-kin for the remainder of his contract?
And of course, much love and prayers for his family.
Someone asked this on TSL, and the answer was that it goes to his estate. We're reaching the end of it anyways, so it's something around 280k that the athletic dept will be paying.

I have personally been critical of some of his decisions, and I've poked a bit (OK, a lot) of fun at his expense, but I have always, and will always, respect what Jim Weaver did for Virginia Tech. Thank you, Jim. Rest in peace.
He was a tremendous person. He did a lot for Tech athletics, and I hope that Hokie fans all around the globe remember him for that. Thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. RIP Mr. Weaver.

Weaver, much like Steger, led the construction and renovation of many of our facilities. I'd have no problem having the new indoor facility be the Beamer-Weaver Indoor Practice Facility.
I think something more fitting would be the West Side Expansion of Lane Stadium being renamed the Jim Weaver Tower.
I'm not too big on the shared name concept.
Each of those guys did enough to get something named after them at some point.
Not to mention that Weaver-Beamer just doesn't really roll of the tongue.

His health was worsening, but obviously much more than he let on.
As much as is said light-heartedly, he was a giant to push VT forward.

I didnt believe the title of this thread when I read it! I had no idea how bad his health was. Rest in peace Jim. For all the ribbing all of us give you, all of us respect where you helped bring VT athletics.

That guy took many slings and arrows from many of us, myself included. He did enormous amounts for our athletic department, and, by extension, our university.
The services should be held at noon.

Wow. Very sad to hear. Still shocked from when I first saw the tweet this morning.
For every one thing that we gave him crap for, he did ten great things for this university and its athletic department.

Rest in Peace, Mr. Weaver. You definitely gave us many happy memories, with your stewardship of Hokie Athletics.
I think you have to give credit to the guy.
VT athletics came a long way under his leadership. Yes we gripe about the nooners, the ridiculous number of ECU games on the schedule, and the inexplicable way Greenberg was fired, but you have to look at all the progress that was made. Some of which included, in no particular order:
-- VT in the ACC.
-- VT having played for a national championship in football.
-- The great facilities at VT that he advocated/planned/built.
-- The fact that Beamer and Foster stuck around in spite of other opportunities and continued
to build the program.
-- The premier games and bowls VT has been to.
-- The progress of VT men's basketball. In spite of the setbacks, it's on a good trajectory.
-- The hiring of some awesome coaches. VT has won 19 ACC championships in a variety of
sports.
-- The excellent financial shape the program has always been in.
In spite of our high expectations and gripes, the good definitely outweighed the bad.

RIP in Mr. Weaver. He did a lot of good things for the school and I have criticized him on a number of things (the hiring of JJ). I wish he would have retired ealier than he did because I always felt that in the later years he was not up to grind of running a major college program. I hate to see someone work so hard to get to retirement and pass shortly after. My condolencess to the family.

Yah, I generally feel that way too. But Id like to think that he truly enjoyed his job and that his illness would have prevented him from really enjoying a "retirement". Maintaining his position of Athletic Director probably helped him live a more fulfilling end of life. RIP, Mr. Weaver.
You know, I agree with that. He did what he loved as long as he could, not a bad way to wrap it all up.
