Defensive end Trevon Hill, who was a potential member of the two deep at defensive end before tearing his ACL this offseason, posted a video on Twitter this evening. Hill, who signed with Virginia Tech at around 220 pounds, has bulked up to 232. With a 6'4 frame, Hill could be checking in around 240 when he returns for his redshirt-freshman year.

Jeez. I know we rolled our eyes with him being better than Sweat, but with Sweats injury being so much worse than his we actually might have gotten the better one.

While were actively recruiting him. It happened at the beginning of his senior year I believe. His ranking on some sites took a bit of a tumble afterwards.

This is my concern. With his ACL injury the only muscle he can really be gaining at this point is upper body and that isn't usually where you see the fastest gains. Would almost think he'd be doing good just maintaining his weight because he could be gaining upper body strength while he's losing lower body muscle from not being able to lift.
Even if it was lower body, 12 pounds in three weeks for a trained individual is likely to be mostly fat, glycogen, and water with a tiny bit of muscle thrown in.
He didn't gain 12 pounds in 3 weeks. My understanding was that he's gained 12 pounds and there are 3 weeks left until Fall Camp.EDIT: Whoops, didn't look back at the picture. I was seeing it in my head and instead saw Isaiah Ford's picture which also drew some criticism as to how he gained the pounds.

Where would he be in rehab at this point? Could he be doing any lifts involving his legs like squats?
I've seen people squat 225lbs 2 months post surgery for ACL reconstruction, so yes, he could. The ACL isn't a stabilizing force in the squat anyway and many people are able to correctly low bar back squat while the ACL is torn provided that swelling doesn't impede full range of motion.

Correct, and that's dumb. And, I contend it's the reason you have so many ACL tears in the first place. You have players with over built quads and underdeveloped hamstrings. Having stronger hamstrings via low bar back squats is a good way to reduce ACL tears.
There are two reasons why trainers eschew the low bar back squat. First, "trainers" generally rely on the natural genetic ability of their athletes to make them look good and have a poor understanding of how to strength coach. Second, it's simply easier to teach a front squat and it is a low bar back squat.
Poor strength coaching is pervasive in college football.
In my experience a front squat, if done properly, does a much better job of engaging the posterior chain and subsequent stabilizing muscles than any form of the back squat. In fact I've intentionally avoided the back squat because of this. What am I missing here? Isn't the back squat usually "Squatting for dummies?"
EDIT: in fact everything I'm now reading about the low bar squat states that it does not do a better job of training the hams. So I'm thinking false on this.
I agree with you in regards to the posterior chain and if you do front squats over back squats I agree with the other poster that you need to ensure you are hitting enough accessory lifts to ensure the hamstrings are not being neglected.
As for the back squat being simple yes the high bar back squat is a relatively simple lift. The low bar back squat definitely takes more finesse and you usually see power lifters or people competing using it more.
You would be completely wrong. The front squat does nothing for the posterior chain. The posterior chain is a muscle group, that is involved with hip extension. There isn't any hip extension involved in the front squat as your back angle is not correctly loaded to require extension.
It does, however beat the hell out of your your hip flexsors.

It may not "Train" the posterior chain, but to do a front squat effectively you have to have a strong/engaged posterior chain, which may be the point. Overhead squats even more so.

They are comparing the front squat to the high bar back squat which requires the same vertical back angle.
The study omitted the low bar back squat from consideration. The low bar back squat requires a more horizontal back angle due to the fact that it must do so in order to maintain center of gravity. In doing so, it loads the spinal erector muscles, the glutes, the hamstrings and the adductors.

You're all sort of right. Front squats have more carry over for athletes as the front squat is primarily used to help in Olympic weightlifting to train the clean and jerk, which is considered an explosive movement compared to just pushing weight. Low bar back squats allow for more overall weight due to the positioning of the bar.
That study is interesting since I had always assumed the difference was much greater, but it refers to a high bar back squat, which is something between the low bar and front. I am still under the belief that a low bar back squat will activate more posterior chain and that the front squat has more quad activation.
If I was a weight training coach, and I'm not, my off-season workouts for athletes would train heavy back squats with front squats as an accessory to help with their clean.

Leg Press and Leg Extensions were a huge part of my rehab for my ACL tear.
For the record, the only reason to use those machines is to regain range of motion of the joint. Once range of motion is regained, then you should start squatting.
