1) Parker Osterloh is working some at #2 Left Tackle with Nijman as the Hokies continue to try to develop a left tackle. He had a competitive rep against Dadi. Alston Smith had some good reps yesterday. Scrimmage work ultimately is going to clear up what right now is a very muddled competition for the swing guard and swing tackle spots.
2) Given Shane Beamer's comments yesterday and the sharpness of some of the cuts I am seeing in team on team work, Trey Edmunds is probably the best back on the roster right now. I like how Edmunds is seeing the hole and making a sharp cut on some of the inside zones. Another back makes a nice cut (I can't tell if it is Edmunds or McMillian) in Front 7 vs Front 7 work, but on the same play, Wade Hansen had nice positioning and leg drive to move Nigel Williams out of the cut back lane. (It likely wasn't a full speed drill, but it looked good.)
3) Lots of jet sweep motion. I get a feeling that all three guys (Coleman, Edmunds, and McMillian) will work both as tailbacks and as jet sweep motion Z backs.
4) Woody Baron looks really quick and disruptive. In pass rush drills, he showed a really nice rip technique and some quick spin moves. It is difficult to make very clear assertions based on watching just the pass rush drills, but when you watch the snap chats the last few days, and combine that with the comments Frank Beamer made about Tim Settle, I drew the following conclusions. If Settle doesn't get redshirted, he may have bypassed both NIgel Williams and Ricky Walker on the depth chart. I noted last year, Walker needed to improve his pass rush, and in these drills both he and Nigel are not getting much done. At the very least, it sure sounds like he is pressing both guys hard.

Comments
Like hearing that. He's a beast when he's 100% and if he's back to being close, that bodes well for our early season games until Shai gets rolling.
awesome to hear about Settle...Even if all he does is push the other guys to excel right now, it sounds like he's going to be a really special player for us. That's really exciting :D
From Andy Bitter's blog:
"You want to play him enough to make it worthwhile, but I think when you've got a talent like that, you try your best to end up playing him there. I'll tell you now, we've got a lot of good tackles, but he can be a good tackle, maybe a great tackle. So we'll see."
Ekanem sure seems impressed.
He's leaping guys on the depth chart at 359 lbs.... If he's that good at that kind of weight?
hahahahahaha.... have fun with that, Coastal QBs
All I can picture is ECU's nose tackle from last year, except wearing O&M. That makes me excited.
I'm still not too sure how many plays he can give 100% on at 359 lbs - especially if a lot of spread teams don't allow the D to change out players for a breather. I'm sure he'll lose some weight during the football season and this fall practice, but even the ECU NT played ~315 lbs I think, and he wasn't in on EVERY play.
True, at the moment I see Settle as a situational wrecking ball, not an every-down player.
Beamer said he needs to add strength and lose weight.
Goal line Defense.
Or offense. Either one will work.
The only thing I didn't like about that play is it should have been Walter Payton that scored that TD. Biggest game of his life and he didn't make it in the endzone. Ditka said that was his biggest regret. He didn't know that Walter hadn't scored, if he had known this picture would have been of #34.
We gotta come up with something here...
That's gotta get settled.
The "InSinkErator"!
I second this idea

Jersey says "80" but the Helmet says "60". That's one helluva TEOL right there.
I was reading the Sports Illustrated article about this play, and they mentioned that they put a tight end jersey on him so they would fool the defense, and the jersey was so tight it was hard for him to breathe
"wasn't in on EVERY play."
Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't that guy only play like 20-25 snaps a game? If so, this was certainly a bit of an under exaggeration.
I don't have the stats in front of me, so I may be wrong. Feel free to correct me with facts.
Yes....except against VT. In those games he had the stamina of Sisyphus
Leg for mythology reference. Could also be used to describe LOLUVa having to play us year in and year out.
Yep...I think I like the UVA analogy better
every year they have to slog through season only to get knocked back down by the hokies.
Sorry to nitpick, but he should also be balancing pillows on his helmet.
via GIPHY
I imagine after camp he'll be a good bit lighter. Hoping his playing weight by September is 315-330
30 lbs in 3 weeks is a LOT. To lose that much, you have to run a serious calorie deficit and typically when you are on the big of a deficit, you are also losing muscle because your body consumes it for the protein. I am no nutritionist but I imagine he will not be losing that much weight that quickly.
Beamer stated he wanted him to drop about 20lbs which I think he could probably do by October-November.
the good news is, even while he's dropping weight in a healthy way, he can be used in certain packages to blow up the O-line, assuming the coaches think he's good enough to contribute.
He can probably do better than that. Losing muscle mass is a bit of a myth with those severe calorie defects. As long as you are strength training and getting enough protein you will retain muscle mass.
yep, that show extreme weight loss regularly* has people losing 80-100lb over 90 days. 30lb in 30 days is not out of the question.
*regularly for their televised stories anyway
Those people on the show aren't concerned with losing muscle or their overall energy levels. They usually have their surgery to reduce the capacity of their stomach and basically starve themselves.
In response to what iv_hokie12, rapid weight loss will most definitely decrease your muscle mass. The body can and will turn to metabolizing muscle as opposed to fat sooner than you think. Body builders have to carefully adjust their macros and assume a very controlled calorie deficit in order to cut and lose as little muscle mass as possible.
if this isn't green in an hour then idk what uo.
#doyouevenliftBRO?
perfect time to bring this gem back
Does Bro Science have anything to do with Dork Magic?
I think we're onto something.. lets keep digging!
it's literally the polar opposite
I asked my wife who is a registered dietitian. Him getting to that weight is a 5-8% decrease in body mass. 1% a week is considered healthy. You are correct, dropping that much that fast could result in muscle loss and weakness. They have dietitians on staff so I am sure they have him on a specialized meal plan and will make sure the weight comes off with no impact in his performance.
The field of nutrition is in its infancy. Many still believe the nonsense spouted by Ancel Keys, Mediterranean nutjobs, Paleo, etc., etc. Genomics will make this morass even worse until it finally unravels as answers filter in. In the meantime, there are plenty who believe muscle mass through ketogenic dieting is preserved even as weight is lost. Whether it applies at this extreme level? Who knows. Who knows whether this is an extreme level. This kid is strong as a horse and 6 4? He may be 30% BF, but to compare him to people on that show is flat out ridiculous. These are sedentary people going from zero and often times 50% BF or more. It comes off extremely fast and if they give them a good diet it may be effectively a ketogenic diet (ketogenic diets mobilize fat as an energy source). As long as the macros meet the body's sustaining requirements I have to believe muscle mass is actually increased initially.
Putting this kid in that class of people is a real headscratcher to me. I'd put $50 on him lasting more plays than 75% of people on this board. I would hope our training department had some cutting edge nutritionists (or at least nutritionists that copy cutting edge nutritionists) that can show him how to eat. Clearly there are some red flags here. The damn thing about it is you can still eat almost anything you want (longevity concerns aside), you just can't eat everything you want all day. Its not calories in calories out when you have weight issues. You have to time and control your macros.
His athletic abilities allow him to work out more than the average overweight person, meaning he has the ability to burn more calories and lose weight even faster.
Speaking of that show though, there are some examples that are relevant. The other night there was 315lb, relatively active Asian kid... did a body mass analysis on him and came back with 190lb lean muscle. So basically he was a semi-athletic guy carrying 125lb of body fat. You might think that would make it harder to lose weight or that he would lose a lot of muscle along the way... Nope. He still lost 90lb in 3 months while doing all kinds of cardio and weight lifting. By the end of that 3 months he was deadlifting 300lb.. not a lot of muscle mass lost there.
Terry Williams was not 315...or even close to it. He was listed at 353...and honestly I don't think he was that skinny. He came in at 329 for his pro day and that was likely after a real effort to lose weight timed to peak (so to speak) for that event.
not to mention terry williams has 1/2 the foot speed and movement that settle sees to have. Williams was just a big guy and we decided to run his way a lot that game..
Settle at 330-340ish is where i could see him get
All he has to do is play 3 straight plays. Punt. Rest. Repeat.
Baron has looked very fast the last couple days
Also French, can we realistically have a LG at 6'8" with Osterloh? Doesn't that height make it near impossible to get under the pads of whatever DT hes against?
It may not matter- they had Osterloh splitting reps with Nijman at left tackle yesterday.
thoughts on that? Nijman not performing that well or osterloh finally making a move?
Likely Osterloh making a move. He has more experience and the bulk right now. Nijman is in his what, 20th or 25th practice total? I predict Nijman will be a long term solution at LT but Osterloh is probably closer to playing in the case of an injury early this season.
I've been watching the vtfootball snapchat account - has anyone stopped Baron? I think he's going up against 2nd line but man it looks like he's making them look foolish.
I have yet to see any report stating that Baron is not playing like an absolute monster. Dude's been stepping it up big time. We very well may be 5 or 6 deep at tackle this year with very little dropoff.
I hope his is a monster. If he is, then I can point back to my high school film review where I said he was going to be awesome way back when people thought he wasn't going to contribute because he was gray-shirted.
Just went against Teller and unsurprisingly got shut down
looked like wyatt stood him up pretty good yesterday.
if it takes Wyatt to beat him, he's probably doing alright.
the question was asked if anyone had stopped him. i'm more interested in seeing how he does in actual game play rather than 1 on 1 situations when he can pin his ears back personally.
Good to hear on trey. Coming in to this season I thought if he was healthy and had the burst from his r-fr year he would probably be the best back on the roster. Still hope JC gets a good amount of carries because he's what being a hokie is all about. Sounds like shai is making a case for not redshirting though as well and all the coaches seem to talk about McMillan, but i'd prefer shane to keep the rotation to 2 or 3 at most preferably.
Agreed- provided Coleman and McMillian can bring the power element with Trey, I think all three guys give you just about everything you want. I see McKenzie kind of in the same light as Lawson, in that when they have a redshirt year, and you have depth at the position, you make 100% sure they are completely ready before you give them a look (experience for Lawson and the injuries for Shai being my hang up.) If they play tOSU and can run the ball effectively with those three guys, I think Shai gets the shirt, and you consider burning it if there are injuries.
Yeah, I heard Mike Barber the other day saying he suspects McKenzie will be the #1 back by mid-season (or something like that). I was thinking to myself...I doubt that unless the injury bug bites again.
I agree, there's just no effective way we can play Edmunds, Coleman, McMillan AND McKenzie to any extent all together.
Is this our RB depth chart? There's been a lot of news but I've not been able to keep up. I know Shai is out for game one. Is Marshawn going to redshirt? I know DJ Reid did, or at least that's what I read somewhere.
For game two, do you think Shai squeezes somewhere in the middle of the three you listed? Redshirt him too?
For Game 1, yes.
Reading between the lines, sounds like Shai might take the place of JCC when he comes back, and JCC might move to getting significant playing time as a slot receiver.
Just like tOSU now uses Curtis Samuel (their back up RB to Zeke Elliott) as their H-back/jet sweep guy now.
I believe the jet sweep job is already taken.....
Newsome was very productive on the jet sweep last year against OSU
And most of the year, really
crap that's who I meant. my mistake.....I'll fix it.
Unless he gets ejected for a BS targeting call on punt coverage...
Getting the feeling that Marshawn will redshirt. Reid has already used his redshirt. The coaches said that McKenzie had looked good earlier this week. It is hard to tell, but I do hope that Shane uses a shorter rotation at the RB spot. We saw how well it worked with JC at the end of last season and with Trey the season prior.
Right. I could see 42 not redshirting only if we didn't have any depth. Save that knee.
I find it hard to believe that guys can overtake folks on the chart based off one day in pads. That doesn't seem like a lot of reps for a competition. It does however look like Baron is looking good in pass rush drills.. I think the question becomes how does he do when you can't just pin your ears back.
Couple things
1) As much as he has put his life into the team, did anyone really expect JCC to stay above a healthy Edmunds on the depth chart?
2) I am kind of scared about lining up a short running back as any type of receiver.
3) As much as Shai is doing a great job, I still think he and Marshawn should be redshirted if JCC, Trey, and McMillian are doing a great job.
4) Great to hear that Settle is living up to his hype.
5) I want the line to get the practice. It sounds like they are doing okay against one of the best Dline units in the Country.
If you put me in charge, I'm red shirting Shai and Marshawn this year.
If they're needed later in the year and they're 110% healthy we can burn it, but I'd rather be cautious. There's a decent amount of depth at RB right now.
You're probably just as qualified as Beamer is for the RB coach positon
*ducks*
Really this again? Shane has an expansive resume.
Calm down. It was just a joke.
From my view point, the jury is still out on Shane's effectiveness and insight. His experience has given him the opportunity to see different competitive football organization function. He has to drawn his own conclusions and his own paradigm (buzz word that is not used much anymore) of priorities for successful coaching. (I forgot to use the current buzz word "innovate".)
As far as pure "experience" goes, I'm sure there are equipment managers that have worked under great coaches that have been on a number of winning teams going to bowl games, but they are still equipment managers. Their are not necessarily great coaching material by merely association.
10 years experience or 1 year experience time 10.
I chuckled.
{cough} Offensive Coordinator {cough}
Shai is looking to good, I highly doubt he will be shirted.
I'm sure that when it comes to the "death chart", JCC would probably prefer to defer to pretty much anybody, huh?
Stupid phone autocorrect. Fixed.
Darn, just when the legs were piling up!
You got a leg from me for finding that mistake.
And one back atcha for not calling me a dick. I knew what you meant.
Coleman was so productive in that 4 game stretch last year there is no reason to think Edmunds would be better than him, especially when Coleman ran track in the spring.
Sign of improvement:
Trying to determine who our swing guard/tackle will be this fall....
And not the entire freaking offensive line.
It's great to be able to watch this group take shape and stabilize. That's going to go a long way for our offensive production.
I can't tell you how frustrated I was when I used to hear, "Well, we're moving guys around a lot to see where they fit best, and then we'll have a starting 5 based on what combo works best together." I don't know diddly squat about offensive lines but I'm pretty sure that's not a good thing.
One time I was playing NCAA football, and I got a DL recruit that was a bunch of meh, but when I looked into moving him to another position he graded out as something like a 97 as a true freshman at FB.
I'm guessing those coaches had something similar happen, and now they're constantly checking to see if there are better fits.
Are you sure that wasn't Logan as a TE???!!! (ducks)
haha, no lie, it really felt like cheating when that kid was on the roster. He was like 6'5 230 but was at or near max stats in speed, acceleration, catching, toughness, and carrying. I think this was NCAA Football 2004, so I had Marcus Vick, Kevin Jones, Eddie Royal, and this kid all on the field at once.
Dropping some Spider 2 Y Banana on teams with that guy?
Trey the best RB on the team? I think a 5'6" man who squats more than some lineman might prove you wrong.
Trey was ahead of him last year despite JC being healthy and Trey being banged up. It took season ending injuries from McKenzie, Williams, and Edmunds plus a cameo from Joel Caleb before JC got back into the lineup.
JC played terrific football, however, don't discount how much better the run blocking was during that stretch versus early in the season. I appreciate the heck out of JC's work load, and I admire him because, after that Pitt game, I would have told you he would never play another down at VT, and he got his mind right and stepped up when he had an opportunity. But, if the OL can provide the same degree of blocking, I am pretty convinced that a 100% Edmunds is a better all around running back.
also add to the list--> Jerome Wright.. who was scout team, left team, 3 carries and a fumble at the 10 in the Miami game.
got a feeling tons of kids would have packed it up after that for sure.
So, French, what kind of year would it take for Trey at RB to make up for not having him go the LB route? I know you were always a big fan of having him on the D. With LB being a position of need for a couple years, it always makes me wonder........
If he has a 1000 yd season, I guess that would help, huh?
These 'Snaps' are incredible. I highly recommend getting Snapchat just to watch these daily.
Great work VT, another solid move that I'm sure the recruits love.
As someone who was pretty set on never joining snapchat I will say
it has definitely been worth it. I love the behind the scenes.
Finally broke down and got snap chat solely for this. Problem is it makes no sense to me haha. Probably took me five minutes just to find out how to search and add vtfootball. Now I can't figure out how to watch any videos. Do I need to wait until they post a new one or can I go and watch old ones?
Sorry, at 25 years old I'm clearly way too old to figure out snapchat.
We're in the same boat. Took me forever to just get started. I think you can only watch things that are posted after you've added the vtfootball account. There was nothing posted when I joined, but a few hours later they had a video up, so I'm assuming there's no retroactive function. If someone who's young enough to get off my lawn wants to correct me, please feel free!
Basically, nothing lasts longer than the amount of time set, theoretically. Yes, they are still in your phone's memory so those dirty pictures you send can be recovered, but on the surface, they are gone when time expires. If you send a snap to someone else, that time is as long as you specify, up to 10 seconds. Once viewed and time expires, the snap expires and disappears. If you post it to your "story" then it is globally visible for 24 hours.
Well or use screen grab, or snapchat grabbing apps, or take a picture of it with another phone. Kids who think snapchat or any other app that claims to prevent people from keeping dick pics sent to them are idiots. Once people understand that snapchat will go the way of MySpace. It's user interface is too difficult to use, it's hard for people even tech savvy ones to fully grasp quickly so it won't grow past a certain point.
Yes, you can screen capture anything and almost nothing electronic ever disappears. Snapchat has changed a lot from it's original form and it no longer is primarily a private photo share app. It's now officially a part of social media.
Snapchat has moved way past the era of being centered around or concerned with dick pics. Its moved on to be a much larger social media tool. If you think its that difficult to use, maybe tech savvy is a generous term to be using
Thanks for one of your one your usual comments. I'm by no means tech savvy in fact I'm far from it, however I know several people on TKP and in person who do just fine with tech and work in the tech field who think their user interface is subpar. It's not easy to search for "topics" based channels and the intro to people just joining is subpar.
Its not the best interface, but saying it will go the way of myspace is very dated. Once they started adding stories, geotagging and news channels they moved past the "screen grab naked pictures" that you seem to think idiots don't understand
And does anybody have any good ideas of how to explain to my wife why I have Snapchat on my phone??!?!
"Uh, yeah, honey, it's so I can see some clips of the Hokies practicing and stuff...." Doesn't sound so convincing.....
I started using snapchat because it was one of the few chat apps my wife's school hadn't blocked. (Her room didn't get cell service).
Now it's just another tool to feed my VTFootball obsession.
Ha! I am 33 and can't figure it out! Basically I was able to add
vtfootball and nationals. That's as far as I've gotten...
I'm sure the snaps were cherry-picked but there were about 5 in a row yesterday where the O-line was manhandling the D-line and whoever was running the ball was breaking through every time. Not sure if that was intentional or not...maybe French can shine some light on it?
according to tweeter they had like a 10-20 snap scrimmage at the end too.. of course that wasn't snapped!
There weren't any defensive backs in that drill... don't know how much that contributed to our running backs success
It's entirely possible that a spill call is significantly less effective without a free hitter on that side. But the point of that drill is to get the running back one-on-one with a safety or corner and, as Shane has said repeatedly, it's up to our backs to beat that guy and take it.
Does anybody else see this rb rotation playing out ala RmfW, Evans, with DW4 coming in and returning kicks?
I'd imagine a redshirt for Shai will depend on how the running game is looking
Yes and yes. And if we get that same level of production from the current 3, hooray.
