If you've got three, four, five, counting Shai and Marshawn, you're not going to be able to play all five if everybody's able to stay healthy.
This is encouraging to me. 2 top backs and a spell/change of pace back. Not a 5 person circus show where we never know who is coming in next and nobody can find any sort of rhythm.

I don't see why folks are surprised by this. It's been the M.O. for the last 2 seasons. Two backs getting about 90% of the carries and the rest split. The problem is that it wasn't the same two backs from game to game because of injuries.

I don't think the problem was with how many running backs were used or how many carries each got over the course of the game. It was more about when they were substituted, whether one guy ever got a chance to get into a rhythm before he was taken out for the other guy. And there were times when it seemed some RBs had such specific roles that if they came into the game, everyone in the stadium knew the play call.

If anything he was able to get on the headphones and hear Lefty in the press box and things like that. So that was a good experience for him, to see what we go through on gamedays.
is it just me, or does anybody else think Sam Rogers is going to make a helluva football coach someday?

Shane said he wants to do something in physical therapy.
Shane: "I don't know. I'm trying to talk him into coaching. I think he wants to be a physical therapist is the route he's going right now. He'd be an unbelievably good coach if we go that route. And when you watch him, it's hard not to picture him as a coach. But he's one of those guys that he can do whatever he wants. He's going to be successful at in life."

Gotta admit, watching this kid develop, on and off the field, beginning with his recruitment all the way through to today has been one of the highlights of my experience as a fan these last few years. Great kid and I am happy to see him continue to find success.
I wonder what it feels like to have an entire fanbase not only consider you one of their favorite players, but in addition create and continue this persona of unlimited badassery? Must be pretty sweet...

"Is he a fullback? Is he a receiver? Is he a tailback? Is he a tow truck? What's he doing? So he can do a lot for you and that comes, like I said, with his knowledge of the offense and his development as a player also."
Fixed it.

Had an aunt who had a genuine Victorian "fainting couch". When we asked why they called it that, my uncle said it was because he fainted dead away when he found out what she'd paid for it.

fun fact: the psychiatrist's couch originated from fainting couches. Apparently a woman who had gotten therapy from Freud gave her fainting couch to him as a thank you because she didn't need it anymore.

He'll be targeted out of the backfield, yeah. We've also spread him out wide and given it to him on end-arounds and throwing passes before. He probably won't get as many carries as last year where he was forced into more of a RB role because of injuries.

Loeffler alluded to Sam being used more as an H-Back and pass catcher this year. He said that the injuries last year derailed what they had planned for him. My guess is that you could see him line up in the backfield and then flex out to the slot. A not so bold prediction is that he will throw the ball on a trick play this year.

as for Rogers, it's funny because I never remember us using our fullback for anything but blocking until he came along. But he's useful in lots of ways (blocking, passing, catching, running, intimidation) so our coaches have utilized him more than they have other fullbacks in the past (if I recall correctly, I could be wrong). he definitely was our go to running back on a few plays (games?) last year. I think they like that he can be a pass catching option, but I doubt he'll be a major target given that we have two great wideouts and two or three legitimate targets at TE.

Jarrett Ferguson was our 2nd leading receiver in 2001... ~150 career carries, ~50 catches, and 19 touchdowns. He was a beast. That said, that was a while ago and the he was the exception.

From 1996-2000, Cullen Hawkins had 21 career receptions compared to 57 carries.
From 1994-1997, Marcus Parker had 32 career receptions compared to 211 carries. 20 of his receptions were in 1997.
From 1993-1996, Brian Edmonds had 41 receptions and 236 carries. In 1995 and 1996, he had 19 and 15 catches, respectively.
In 2002, Tech fullbacks Doug Easlick and Josh Spence combined to have 40 runs or receptions.
So it hasn't always been that way. According to this article, 2005 was the year things changed.

Beamer was more definitive about it: "I think Trey is better than Trey ever was right now."
God Save the Queen.

Sam Rogers is going to be one of those crazy strength and conditioning coaches that breaks boards over his own head.
He is an HNFE major...http://www.hokiesports.com/football/players/rogers_sam.html

I am pretty sure no one will be able to handle to handle that much awesomeness as a coach...
When I read those sentences, my only thought was, "Sam just leveled up. May God have mercy on the souls of our opponents."
Great news on Trey, always have felt he could be a 1000 yard rusher if given the carries. Sounds like he is fully healthy!

If I were and elegant Victorian Lady I would have swooned and fainted dead away upon reading that line.
Leg. I call that "the vapors" haha.
And yeah, I felt a twinge when I read he muscled up to 225.

So is Sam Rogers going to be used in the H Back role? From the blog it seems he is a target for passes as well as running the ball.
Also, is it just my browser or does the link look like it ends with andy_litter_virgin ...
The fullback position catches passes at VT. Especially when that FB can throw the ball, run the ball and catch the ball like Sam Rogers can.

andy_bitter_virgin, but yes

Wow, 19 tds. I didn't remember he was that effective.
We'd use him on defense too, but unfortunately facts are facts...
...there's no 'D' in Rogers.
