Defensive coordinator Bud Foster was made available to the media for the first time since the whole fine system fiasco last week. That sure caused quite the stir! Would Foster be more tight-lipped with the bevy of media folks surrounding him this time around? Nope! He was as open and honest as usual.
In fact, Foster started off the media session with a smirk and some lighthearted comments regarding the last week's ordeal regarding player fines.
"Good to see you guys again," he exclaimed to the media members in attendance. "You guys made me famous; like it was all me! It's alright, I got thick skin."
Turning to some actual football discussion (for the sake of all of our sanity), Foster reiterated that Ohio State's decision to not name their starting quarterback has no bearing on his defense's preparation because he feels both quarterbacks Cardale Jones and J.T. Barrett will make appearances.
"I think we'll see both of them, but our plan is to not change," he said. "They run their offense and that's what they do."
Foster even made the point that he wouldn't be surprised to see converted H-Back Braxton Miller used in the Wildcat formation.
"I could see him running the speed sweep and throwing back to the quarterback and those types of things," Foster added. "With him in there, there's always that type of threat."
While much of the attention leading up to the Ohio State game has been the Buckeyes' highly publicized QB competition, Foster made it clear it'll be critical to keep RB Ezekiel Elliott contained in the backfield.
"He's 225 pounds and runs like he's 195 pounds," Foster said about the Buckeyes' dynamic back. "We've got to gang-tackle him and we can't always assume that one guy is going to bring him down."
Other tidbits from Foster:
- He said DE Vinny Mihota was in a boot on Monday after getting leg whipped during last Friday's scrimmage. Foster noted that Mihota feels he'll be fine in the next day or so. If Mihota were unable to play, DE Jeremy Haynes would be the next man up.
- Foster compared the OSU's depth and talent at QB to Tennessee's 1994 team when their roster featured Peyton Manning, Todd Helton and Jerry Colquitt (though Foster forgot Colquitt's name).
- OSU's Michael Thomas is the one receiver that Foster has concerns about in having his corners cover in man-to-man.
- He doesn't believe OSU's offense will change much despite having a new offensive coordinator in Ed Warinner. (Last year's offensive coordinator, Tom Herman, is now Houston's head coach).
- He compared OSU to Georgia Tech because they both have a set offensive system, utilizing option components.
- He wouldn't be surprised to see the Buckeyes utilize more "12" personnel (1 RB, 2 TEs) as opposed to "11" personnel (1 RB, 1 TE.) Perhaps this is related to the injuries and suspensions at wideout for OSU.
- Foster has been pleased with DT Steve Sobczak's development and likes his upside for the future, especially with his ability to dent the line of scrimmage.
Player Quotes
WHIP/ROLB Ronny Vandyke
ON THE TEAM'S APPROACH TO THE OHIO STATE GAME:
"Our approach is to not try and do anything special. Just continue working hard, doing what we need to do, playing for each other and let the outcome come from that. It is a big game, obviously. But we're not going to treat them any different from the rest of our opponents. We're going to take it one week at a time and right now we're focusing on what's important now and that's Ohio State."
ON WHAT MAKES OHIO STATE SUCH A GOOD TEAM:
"They have talented guys and they have a good coaching staff and I'm sure they do some different things too. But you know, we've got scholarship guys and we've got great players, too. We have a good coaching staff, a great program, so it's a good matchup for us."
ON THE GAMEDAY ENVIRONMENT HE EXPECTS TO SEE AT LANE STADIUM:
"It's going to be loud. I know that for a fact. It's going to be really loud. A lot of people are going to be excited and people are anticipating this game. It's going to be fun."
ON THE COMPARISONS AND DIFFERENCES BETWEEN CARDALE JONES AND J.T. BARRETT:
"You know, Jones is a big guy. He's a big guy. He has a big arm. Maybe, from just watching film, maybe they'll put him in if they need a pass. Both can run and Barrett's really good on his feet. They both can run and they both can throw."
DT Woody Baron
ON IF HE'S READY FOR THE OHIO STATE GAME TO START ALREADY:
"It's been a very long summer. I can speak for me probably on behalf for most of the guys that, you know, we're ready to play against somebody else for once. We're tired of going up against each other everyday in practice. So, definitely ready for a fresh opponent on the other side of the ball."
ON HOW EARLY PREP FOR OHIO STATE BEGAN:
"What we call camp was basically two weeks long and just us working on technique live against one another and then we kind of slowly integrated into our Ohio State prep. We've really gotten into it heavy game week, maybe game week and a half."
ON IF HE BELIEVES THE TEAM CAUGHT OHIO STATE BY SURPRISE LAST YEAR:
"You know, if you go into our locker room, we'd say, 'probably not.' We worked hard. We had a week of preparation and we went up there and we played with a lot of effort and emotion. We don't feel like we caught them off guard."
ON THE KEY TO TACKLING BIG QBS LIKE CARDALE JONES:
"As a defense, whoever's carrying the ball, we like swarming to the ball wherever you are on the field. Once you see the ball is in a declared direction, we want eleven people to go make the tackle. So, I'd have to say, not assuming that one of your teammates makes the tackle, it's going to have to be a group effort. Not just him (Jones) specifically, but anybody carrying the football."

Comments
Informative piece. Everybody on both sides is keeping things close. I'm tempted to go out on a limb and say contrary to what many OSU fans are saying that the game also will be close until the final quarter when they pull away, and say that guys like Sobczak (and Osterloh on offense) will be why if OSU hasn't put the game away before the fourth quarter, we will win. That new found confidence will pay dividends. Wear them out in the trenches. Unexpected, but I can see it happening.
ON IF HE BELIEVES THE TEAM CAUGHT OHIO STATE BY SURPRISE LAST YEAR:
What, and nobody else did?
Here's hoping you can reuse the headline a week from now!
In a much more literal way...
I'm hoping it's a little different:
"Bud Foster Breaks the Buckeyes"
Actually I'd prefer something along the lines of "brewer and company too much for OSU's defense."
"OSU still befuddled by Bud Foster"
Where is my TKP Jeremy Haynes full video breakdown???
I meant to say something in the Bear article but I'll say it here. I agree with Bud that OSU will be using 2 TEs on most of their 1st and 2nd down plays and their 3rd and shorts. I doubt you'll see OSU put 3 WRs on the field very much.
do they even have 3 WR available for this game? I keed I keed
Three? Michael Thomas, K.J Hill, Johnnie Dixon, Parris Campbell, Terry Mclaurin, Curtis Samuel, and oh yeah... so guy named Braxton Miller!
So what, never heard of them and your recievers sucked against us last year. I know guys like Bucky Hodges, Cam Phillips and Isiah Ford.
don't sink to his level bro. Keep it classy
1 legit WR- Michael Thomas
4- TRUE Freshman WR's
and two 2 h-backs Curtis Samuel & Braxton Miller
wow! -140!! that has to be a record.
Also, I'm glad to hear that Bud is watching for them to toss back to the QB after a handoff. I've been thinking they'd do this for awhile.
I reaaaaally really hope Meyer does go with two TEs. If OSU wins it'll be because of big plays on offense. That third wide receiver scares me more than a second TE does. Also, I'd rather see RVD in the game than a nickelback if Meyer wants to run the ball.
For what it's worth, Tech would frequently go into bear against two tight end sets during the open scrimmages.
I'd rather see RVD in the game as well. And, I hope that Meyer sees RVD in the game, and thinks Coach Bud is tipping his hand that the Hokies are expecting a run, calls a pass play, and RVD drops back into coverage and swipes one for a pick 6.
I think everyone can agree on not wanting to see a nickelback on the field.
There will be a break down after the game on the Kroeger Roth Report.
I just pounded my desk with my fist in excitement of the proximity of this game. It is 10:00 am on a Tuesday.
Bring on the Buckeyes now!
Just a few facts that I'd like to point out: VT is 1-27-1 all-time against teams ranked in the top 5, last year they had a 3-4 record at home, and Urban Meyer is 8-2 in "revenge" games (where the opposing team beat his the year prior). So, does anyone honestly buy in to the hype that VT's defense is going to stop OSU's playmakers with Urban calling the shots? Furthermore, VT's offense doesn't scare anyone and is nowhere near as skilled or talented as that of tOSU. I say that there's not a chance in Hell that the Hokies beat the NUMBER 1 TEAM in the country, because that would be an unprecedented feat for VT and they just aren't that good... sorry Hokie fans!
You might be right. But, then again, you probably said a similar thing last year, so....
Maybe being from Cleveland has made you jaded but I do buy into the VT defense hype train. For one thing, shutting down OSU's playmakers is exactly what Bud did last year. Also half of the playmakers are either suspended, hurt, or starting at a new position. I wouldn't underestimate Bud Foster with a full summer to prepare.
From Cleveland and is #teamicecream so much wrong.
Non-conference opponents were 0-35 vs. Urban Meyer at home, all time.
Opponents were 0-36 as OSU's home opener over the previous 36 years.
Unranked opponents were 0-33 vs. OSU since 1981.
That was all before the game last year. Didn't seem to mean much, eh?
So far, the only fact between these two teams is VT 35 and tOSU 21. Now that is a fact!!
Moving on past this troll...dude, I had to look twice at your Avi. I thought it was a bear at first! Sorry I'm a dog lover.
Beni is a long haired Rottie. Very unique and bearish.
Im legitimately considering dv'ing this. But I'm not sure. Clearly we have a troll. But we have a troll who is using stats. But said usage of stats is only being used for aforementioned trolling (hell halfway through the argument he just shifted to trash talk altogether). I know this clown will only continue to talk trash on an opponents board, and I'd rather not deal with it and get them gone. What say you guys?
He was fine until he got to "Furthermore...."
Everything after that was dumb fan vitriol.
He's been here a week and he's already at -50 legs. Woof.
And most, if not all of those came in the last hour.
behold the power of the moderator. 0 to -10 TL in one click
It's awesome! The mods are all like

Im laughing at this harder than Id like to admit...
In an iddy-biddy click!
Meyer's 8-2 record matches the computers saying we have a 20% chance to win. I'll take that.
you play this game 5 times, we win 1 of them.
Dude. Take off the scarlet colored glasses for a sec. Im a buckeye fan, and i fully expect to be rooting for a well prepared, angry team on monday. I DO NOT expect the only team to beat us last year to roll pver and play dead because we are the big bad buckeyes with a 1 beside our name. I expect to win a dogfight.
Classy response
clearly you are not a finance major
"past performance is not indicative of future results"
See you on here Monday night
Ahhh..we know that. Could you give us some new info to chew on? This is why we play the GAME!Call somebody from Nebraska. Who if I may say so were excellent hosts.
This has got to be the most downvoted comment I've ever seen on TKP
EDIT: Nope, he's got one down there with more
Seriously, how the hell does somebody get a grand leg total of over -130? Lmao
Just have those "well we didn't have our stud DE" and "we were missing four offensive starters" and whatever other excuses you can think of ready to go on Tuesday morning. Bud Foster has NFL talent all over the field not just at one or two positions. Football is all about match ups and his scheme matches up very well with anOSU's offense. He's not going to let Elliot plow through the middle like those teams did down the stretch. And before you come back with "other teams tried to use The Bear and it didn't work", those other teams did not have the same talent up front as VT. And they definitely didn't have the level of talent at CB. Not even close. Foster is the best defensive coordinator in the country. Just ask TAMU who their first choice was. He takes walk ons and 2 star guys and develops them into NFL stars. Been doing it for years. I don't know how VT's offense will play against your defense but you can bet your IRA that the Hokies defense will not be pushed around by anOSU. They've finally got all their guys back and are healthy. Sorry, I'm tired of being civil, it's game week and I don't have to use coach speak or be political. So there it is....
Well for your information, Foster is a BUM whose vaunted defenses have been EXPOSED by the likes of Eastern Carolina, Michigan, UCLA, and did I mention JAMES MADISON! The Hokies are a JOKE and haven't been relevanrt since that felon Vick left, so be prepared for a quintessential LOSS against a REAL football program that's actually won championships!
I'm done with the overt trolling. Goodbye.
I figured you had to be hitting the button at the same time as me, because that post went from 0 to -13 with one tap.
Yep. I let him have his first post and blow off some steam, but when you get to this level you are no longer welcome. So I DV'ed this and his first just to shut him up.
I don't know why someone would come here and troll that over the top. Something subtle we would probably be okay with but straight up name calling? Damn homie...
Yeah, anybody looking to do that - I am in no mood. The OSU fans that have been with us through the offseason are great people and I look forward to continuing their conversations. Anyone else, you're wasting your time and I will take great joy in banhammering you.
BANHAMMERED!
I am totally using this next time. Joe can have the sledgehammer explosion. I want to be Thor.
Or you could change up to the Spock-fist.
This works too

And we're all sitting here like
There was that one time one of us was all
But at the end of the day, VTGM comes up all
I like this guy too

At least we didn't lose to that pitiful Hokies team you're talking about last year in front of a record crowd... oh wait.
Is this gonna be a new record for fastest to get banned?
Close, but not quite. Some guy came on here last season and starting just cursing people out in random threads, so I shut him down about 5 min after he joined (or at least, after he first posted). His last words were to call me a "bitch."
And then you were all like
remember when this happened?
Bud Foster remembers
I love how that lined up perfectly with the rollover from 34 to 35.
Edit: My photoshop skills are still nothing to brag about, but figured it needed a little something more.
But...but...they were just breaking in a new QB....and inexperienced OLine....and played Navy....and WRs dropped catchable passes......
Those are all true about last year, but they aren't an excuse. Great teams find a way to win and VT was the greater team that night. We eventually evolved into the greatest team last year as evidenced by losing our QB and then going berserk in the postseason. This year there will be no excuses. Im praying for no injuries and may the best team win again! Go bucks!
That's "Greatest Team That Got Asses Thoroughly P*wnd and Handed To Them on Own Home Field By VT Last Year." FTFY
And don't take it too personally. Meant more as a rub in to the pundits and scarlet and silver eyed homers in 11Dubs.
I dont take it personally, but the Buckeye players and staff did. I'm expecting to win a close, competitive game because of all the factors like lane stadium at night, first game, suspensions, etc. But part of me knows our teams were in different universes at the end of the season. If we can start where we left off (not expecting it, necessarily) then it will be a blood bath.
If we can start where we started, then it won't. Here's to a good game regardless.
Do you live under a bridge in Ohio? When those cars go thump, kind of rattles your brain, yeah?
Glad you're here little fellow, I've been getting tired of the civility myself as it's game week.
Take a break dude, you don't have to be a dick everyday of your life. I know you're just pissy 'cause its gonna be a long ride back to OHIO!!!
That was directed to Avanti54.....whatever the hell that is!
yeah what an idiot. The Avanti didn't come out til 1963
Fing A 681 it is game week and the only good thing about Ohio is that it leads you into Michigan for some great fishing.
