Virginia Loses a Heartbreaker in the Final Seconds to Notre Dame

Virginia was 12 seconds away from upsetting Notre Dame.

The lede from the Associate Press along with the agony of Virginia fans in Scott Stadium sums up how football went in Charlottesville yesterday.

Notre Dame quarterback DeShone Kizer came in for the injured Malik Zaire and threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Will Fuller with 12 seconds left Saturday as the No. 9 Irish beat Virginia, 34-27

And yes, a Fuller bests UVA again.

I just gave it a chuckle.
That's rough, reminds me of an 07 BC game

So, to sum up, some days you're the BYU guy, and on days like yesterday you're the Boise guy:

Whats up with that? Every game I watch they are pulling something like this- past couple years had me half rooting for UVA when I watched them play... ok not really.

but the man worthwhile, is the man who can smile, when his shorts are too tight in the seat'

they're already 25+ years old, why would they even need to cheat?

They call them peepstones.

The real question is, did BYU kick him out of school for that...

Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies

Well that's just a shot to the nuts...

That's one of the funniest things I've ever heard. Fantastic! How is it that I've never seen that before???

That's going to be one of my new favorite sayings. Guaranteed that I'll wear that one out!

The story behind why he did it is hilarious too. TL,DR: it was a bet.

We have a new term: "The Scott Stadium Slump"

That was amazing, but I hate that UVA was competitive in this game...

I personally love the fact that they lost in the most #LOLUVA way possible. They were winning, but found the one thing that could have possibly gotten them beat and did it. Then they were sad because they realized they just can't win football games. Love it.

Yknow you're right. The mental hit from a loss like that has to be devastating, more so than getting blown out.

Please see GuitarMan's gif above.

Notre Dame isn't all that. GT will handle them next week.

On that note, I'm terrified of GT this year. Looks like CPJ has finally got his protypical option QB, and they are rolling. They look scary fast.

Leonard. Duh.

I'm reserving my opinions on GT this year until after the Notre Dame game. Their first two games aren't the best sample, even though they dropped 60+ on both opponents. But the first game was "who gives a damn university" and the second was Tulane, who hardly put up a fight against Duke, and seems to be unable to get out of their own way.

If we're still seeing them outscore people by 50+ points every week in a month, then I'll be worried.

I'll reserve my opinion on them as well because I can't be sure how their defense will perform against a team with a pulse.

But I do think that GT has the potential to be problematic for just about everyone. I'll go as far as to say that they'll beat ND this weekend.

GT always looks amazing against inferior competition. The difference between no gain and a 60 yard yard run is very small with that system -- and the small difference in speed and quickness between lesser teams and better teams can be a massive difference in the ability to stop GT's offense.

Duke beat Tulane pretty handily too...at Tulane and with an offense that is replacing some key skill players.

It's a shame either team won this game, would have liked to see both lose. UVA played above their heads and still managed to blow a close game, however I am looking forward to seeing the annual mid to late season meltdown . As usual ND is highly overrated ( secondary is not good) . Don't think the acc schedule for ND will be the cakewalk that they were looking forward to.

I'm just astounded a program like Texas (which must REALLY suck), with all its vast resources, traditions, and excellent recruiting grounds can fall off like they have since 2009. This very well might have been the annual game where loluva plays way out of their league, only they didn't get the win this time. Boo hoo.

I've always said that UVA plays two games a year: the first and the last. Only this year I think they forgot they played UCLA.

Best part of my day.........and it was already an awesome weekend!

I thought the guy having a full-on stomping temper tantrum on the hill was great. My highlight of the day.

I been here since day 0.

I just hope we blow the doors off their hinges when we play Uva and start changing the minds of these highly touted recruits that choose Uva over us. That's all I want.

The things we would be able to do with the in state talent...Ugh.

Granted, I know we lose a lot to outside teams as well, but I feel like if we were to at least get the ones that go to Uva...we'd have a bit more success, and would eventually start locking Va down for the *most* part.

If eleven straight hasn't changed their mind, their recruiting isn't influenced by VT vs UVA.

"I liked you guys a lot better when everybody told you you were terrible." -Justin Fuente

What recruits are you referring to? Blanding and Brown never really considered us. Neither did Kamara, and he's already gone. Moss picked them over us and he's third string. We didn't recruit Dean and he's one of their best players.

UVA outrecruiting VT isn't really a thing. We haven't done well in state recently, but they haven't either. And we've done really, really well out of state during the same time period. Go look at their roster right now, it has about five good players on it (Blanding, Johns, Mizell (maybe), Brown (maybe) and....maybe Severin?).

Glad UVA lost but was surprised how close that game was. Perhaps this is enough to keep timecop on for a few more years.

We can only hope. VT might be the biggest winner from this game.

Luck of the Irish whacks the Hoos! Sweet!

that's actually the second time this season UVa got burned by a Fuller...Devin Fuller had a nice game for UCLA in the first week (6 rec 44 yards and a touchdown)...granted that game wasn't as close as this one but it seems to be a trend. there'll be a third instance later on this year.

How soon before that pic of the UVA fan on the back of the horse is someone's logo on here? Classic!
Not to pile on UVA, but why would there not be safety help on the one deep treat playmaker ND has on the field...

Wasn't there? Pretty sure he was double-covered when Fuller made the play...

TKPC #666 ...man that was long wait...

The safety either gave up on the play or was way out of position. By the time the ball got to Fuller the safety was still a good 5-7 yards away from him and had no chance at making the play. Can't tell from the clip but he may have been the only deep safety and if so he was probably in the center of the field and not cheating over to Fuller's side to help cover. QB may have looked him off too. I would hardly call it double coverage, though.

I love that we don't even need to gloat over this one, the whole universe of football is doing it for us. Ha! My wife and I have a continuing discussion about whether a trouncing is as bad as a last second heartbreaker. I kinda trend toward the trouncing, but this was a really great heartbreaker. Loved it, fun to watch.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

It honestly depends on the person.

Sometimes I think a last second heart breaker is worse, sometimes I think a drubbing is the worst.

Really depends on the team and at what point in the season that you're at I feel like.

Yeah, I agree. I think that's why it is a continuing discussion.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

I think last minute heartbreakers hurt bad for a few days, but then when you have time to analyze things you realize that you're at least close. A good old fashioned a$$ kicking leaves you with that feeling of "good God we suck" for long after the game is over.

"Badges? We don't need no stinking badges!"

While a blowout is rough, trying defending your team against people saying their awful and whatnot...IMO, last second losses are worse. 2007 BC was about the worst I've ever felt watching football. I broke my phone that night throwing it into a wall!

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Reminds me of the McNabb game, or the Matt Ryan game, or the GT game last year, or.....TBD this year

100/10

Will it be as funny when Notre Dame takes VTs post season spot this year?

Only if it was the playoffs. The non-playoffs NYD bowls don't really mean as much as they used to.

I can't imagine I will ever say "I can't believe they stole our Russell Athletic Bowl Bid" and really care. Our bowl lineup includes about 6 bowls that are all about the same. If you aren't going to the Peach, it doesn't matter that much.

We got screwed with bowls under this new system. It's all or nothing.

Tech won, UVA lost, and the SEC had some trouble. You could say it was a good day

Yet, the NFL is still pumping up the SEC as the best conference

Onward and upward

I was at this game. Stadium was about 80% full, but about 40% of the fans were ND fans. It was like a neutral site game. The golden domers D did not play like they did against Texas. With soft coverage, inside releases and underneath routes were open all day, and LOLUVA was able to take advantage. They scored on a trick play, but ND did too. How Candiday let Fuller get behind him is inexplicable.

Oh, I can confirm that LOLUVA has apparenty lost all hope of ever beating us. Their countdown clock outside their locker room no longer shows the time until they play us, just the upcoming game.

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

Notre Dame was leading, 26-14, when their starting quarterback rolled his ankle and left the game. They had missed a 43-yard field goal earlier, and had missed some early scoring opportunities.

The score may have been close at the end, but Notre Dame should have had this game in hand.

We can only hope this was enough to keep TimeCop another year, maybe two. If they had won, we'd get 2 or 3 more years with him. If UVA had pulled this one out, they would have hung their hats on it for at least 2 years.

I doubt that would have saved London's job. They haven't extended him, so I think they were just saving money for their next coach by keeping him this year.

Maybe so, but I believe they would have ridden a signature win over *Notre Dame* for awhile.

Brewer getting hurt had me at about seven sad UVA fans (SUFs for short).

All I can think of is "The 12 Days of Christmas," where this would be the always-bellowed line "FIVE SAD HOO FANS."

"Exit light..."
