The Hokie Pokey

Do you guys actually like it or no? Personally, I always thought it was kind of lame. It's just my opinion.

Not as lame as this Aspen training weekend amirite?

Every second counts

Is it off season already?

Come to think of it, I don't recall them doing it this year so far

Tyrod did it, Mikey!

Ummm yes I can confirm they did it for anOSU game, even had anOSU band members do it.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Join us in the Key Players Club

It's been played in both games so far this year. And it will continue to be at every game this year and probably many many years to come.

One of those things that if people get into it, it's fun. At the anOSU game, it was so crowded that I couldn't really dance along and no one around me was doing it so yeah it felt kind of lame.

Also, it's harder to do with seat backs cause you can't hop up on your seat to get some room in front.

I like it

"We were at the pinnacle, and we did it for years," Foster says. He pauses, nods, takes a deep breath. "And I did it with the best guy in the business."

My daughters love it. I do it wrong so they laugh.
It adds to the family atmosphere.

I can see how it wouldn't be fun for everyone but think of it as a kinky way to do Stick it in, Stick it in, stick it in. It'll be more fun that way.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

^^^^ that's what it REALLY is all about.......

do you throw paper airplanes at the games too?? That's lame. The hokie pokey should stay and will stay. Why would we stop doing it?? Because it's too childish for 18-22 year olds??

I do the Hokie Pokey, and turn myself around. Wash me in your judgement.

Get rid of the hokie pokie?

How is this even a question? Of course not!

I have no problems with it. I think its unique and I like that part of it. Sure, its kind of silly but nobody else in the country does it...so that's cool

Onward and upward

Hmmm ok so lets get rid of the few things that are geared for the enjoyment of our young fans and young at heart faithful. We can also just sit on our hands the whole game cause clapping is loud and hurts after awhile too. Just because you are "too cool" to turn yourself around doesn't mean that little johnny and little susie haven't been waiting on it all game and also waiting to see the guy in the tuba dance around.

I'd rather see a kid smiles then some college student face lit up from the light of their cellphone trying to take another selfie. Sorry I have the case of the Wednesday and honestly, it has become alittle too of whiny around here and everyone seems to have butt hurt syndrome.

If I want to continually hear about drama in the stands then I would go to the Sabre and read about matching bowties and boat shoes for next weeks game against the mighty tribe.

Sorry I have the case of the Wednesday

ITS YOUR LUCKY DAY!!!! It's ONE(1) day closer to Friday than you think!!! because today is Thursday...

Onward and upward

Yea its such a poor start of the day my brain has already short circuited to another day. I haven't even finished my damn toaster struddle. Dumb ass Thursday!

But thank you for bringing me back to reality.

Agree on all points particularly the increasing amount of whining in TKP.

Lol, you sound like the butthurt one. It's not like this is an open letter or something to get rid of it.

Haha jk!! yes good point!! adding to the whining by being pissy myself doesnt help.

"Welcome to the Terror Dome." -- Corey Moore

True, true, but I do agree. The community seems especially ancy this year, I think it is because this it. We need to be good this year or else we probably keep slipping. Everyone is on edge.

Enter sandman, the skipper cannon fire, turkey legs, Hokie pokey, and VT home wins are my favorite things about football games! So yes it must stay!

-Semper Primus

I love the fact that we have a mascot that can be hunted, eaten, drank, run as a non-QB direct snap play, country, and is the centerpiece for a meal where footballs rules the day.

And I too love all of the things you stated about Hokie Football!!!! (Including road wins. Especially in C'Ville.)

I love everything about turkey too! So many people ask me what I eat for thanksgiving with our mascot a turkey... My response, "dude, we eat smoked turkey legs at our football games! Of course, I eat turkey!"

-Semper Primus

What if the Hokie Pokey really is what it's all about? Just saying!!!!!

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

I think it's a great tradition, as well as a good time to use the bathroom and have enough time to get back before the Dwayne Lawson show begins in the fourth quarter this year.

C'mon! We've got much more important issues to scream about...like paper airplanes.

But what if you have paper airplanes that do the Hokie Pokie

I personally think its corny, but if other people like it then whatever. I'd rather it not be played right before the 4th quarter because I feel like it can kind of suck the energy out of the crowd. I think halftime is the better spot.

I never did it but would miss it if they stopped. It's history. All colleges have lame things they do as tradition. It stays, forever.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

Ask a Tuba if he/she thinks they should stop doing the Hokie Pokie.

Do you WANT to get dogpiled?

I don't particularly care for it, but it's pretty low on my "Virginia Tech Football To-Fix List." Definitely behind the replace-skipper-with-fire-breathing-bud-foster initiative.

Every sports team seems to have a tradition that the rest of the world sees and goes "really?".

The Hokey Pokey is Virginia Tech's...

I like it for snoozer games like Furman, but absolutely hate it for real games like OSU. I think it kills the energy.

Its not like the break between quarters is going to get shorter if we don't do it...the amount of time is already determined.

I enjoy it, my classmates enjoy it. We in fact look forward to it. If the Hokey-Pokey were taken away there would be riots.

They'll really get after ya

If you're gonna riot then do it right

I personally never get into it. But I am ok having it. I am normally sitting down recharging between quarters so i can come out full force screaming the next quarter

@VTimHokie85

You could view the Hokie Pokey kind of like your great Granny's Cranberry sauce.
It's kinda lame, but it wouldn't be Christmas without it.

Or you could say, it's silly but fun.
Either way, get up and shake something!

I thought The Hokie Pokey was the Blacksburg PD Drunk Tank?

Personally, I love that we embrace our pop culture reference. And eat turkey legs.

It's fun in blowouts/nooners where we have a comfortable lead and I'll dance along. In competitive games though, it feels very out of place and kind of kills the tension. Would much prefer something like Georgia's ominous 4th quarter hand raise in those situations.
BUT...it's a weird, unique tradition, that's defiantly ours, so I can't help but appreciate it

Maybe when Metallica plays enter sandman live one day, they could come back out at 3rd quarter end and do a cover of the Hokie Pokey...

@VTimHokie85

Heavy metal Hokie Pokey?

We need this guy.

I love the Hokie Pokie. You know what we did about 3/4s of the way through our wedding reception? THE HOKIE MOTHERFUCKIN' POKIE, that's what.

Those are the best dang pictures in the wedding album, I swear...

Noice. I think we may have done that too...not sure.

But, my wife did bribe the DJ into playing Enter Sandman when we were introduced! There were a handful of Hokies there, and they were jumping. Pretty darn cool. (Of course I had to explain it to a few people why we have "metal music" playing.)

I used Sandman for the lead up to the garter toss. I impressed the DJ by letting him know the exact time that I was going to toss it.

YOU WILL DO IT AND LOVE IT!!! Sorry, couldn't find the correct gif to go with this on Internet world.

"What are you going to do, stab me? - Quote from Man Stabbed

Meh, it'll have to do.

I love the Hokie Pokey. It is what its all about. It is a nice break to the commercial break in between quarters. It takes nothing away from the game and is a way to reinvigorated for the fourth quarter.

Personally I think it's lame and hate that it totally kills any excitement between the 3rd and 4th quarters. I'm fine with keeping it since a lot of people like it, but move it to halftime or something.

Actually, moving it to halftime isn't a bad idea

I agree it's a bit lame, but I don't think it kills excitement any more than mascot races during the 7th inning stretch do.

If anything it reengages the less passionate fan by drawing their attention back to the field a provides of a change of pace. It's also pretty entertaining watching kids dance around with giant sousaphones on their shoulders.

Let's keep in mind that this is all for entertainment. Even the football game.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

yes, well, you're already at a baseball game, so there's not a ton of excitement to kill to start with.

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

Because there's just so much excitement in the activities between the 1st and 2nd quarter...

I am still trying to figure out how you think it kills excitement. To me it brings more excitement for the fourth quarter.

To me, it's like someone hits a giant pause button while everyone stands around waiting for the game to start back up. It just seems to suck all the energy out of the place for 5 minutes. I'm not sure what to replace it with but if it were up to me, I'd make the hokie pokie the closing act of the halftime performance.

The break between the 3rd & 4th quarters should be like the timeout during the final seconds of the 2011 Miami game -- with people losing their minds and the place going nuts!

I do it when I'm at home watchin' the games, let alone at the stadium...because sometimes in life, you can be cooler by doing something dorky with full reckless abandon and no care for what anyone else thinks, than to choose to not join in and just be perceived as a grump.....

Also, VT doing the Hokie Pokie beats Pittsburgh singing sweet Caroline any day......just sayin'

My wife takes the kids and leaves the house while I watch my Hokie games.........nuff said

I'm confused... it kills excitement during a TV timeout, so we should replace it with... checking our phones? Making paper airplanes? Reading a book?

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

I'm a tradition person & it should stay - you saw what happened when "Stick It In" walked the plank. It really PO'ed a lot of people!
