I don't know about that. I think UVa is very good at garnering a positive perception. It's all subjective whether deserved or not. I really don't give a shit.

This particular ranking is anything but subjective.
This pivot is the result of intense public scrutiny on the substantial cost of a degree vs. long tail worth — the very heart of FORBES definitive Top Colleges ranking, now in its eighth year.
It's a cost/benefits ranking.
For instance, according to recently released govt data, an engineering degree from UVA is marginally worth more than one from VT, in terms of salary projections. If that's the case for engineering, consider what it must be for business etc.

As a graduate student here at UVA I've honestly been super disappointed with the curriculum and teaching styles. I'm in the science field so a lot of our education is based on doing research but the classes that I've had to take have been remedial and/or unrelated to the research that I'm doing.
On the research side of things Tech promoted forward thinking and adventurous projects while UVA seems to only focus on what will bring in money for grants. Smart but at the same time science needs those crazy ideas every now and then.
There are also a ton of requirements that we have that just suck the time out of your day. Maybe the undergrad side of things is different but the graduate side has been underwhelming at best.

Honestly, you just described grad school everywhere. You will take, at maximum, 2 interesting classes and the rest will be terrible, because people are focused on their research, which when you think about it, usually winds up being some esoteric niche in a very specific field. The grant thing is true everywhere. Funding right now is abysmal, and even established PIs can't get money for things they've built their careers doing, so it's all the bottom line. Write to your congressperson and complain that they're not giving NSF and NIH enough money. Not sure what the other "requirements" are that are bugging you, but if it's anything like my experience at VT, it was irrelevant seminars, TAing, and a variety of random things that turn up that your PI doesn't want to do so he/she pawns it off on you as a "learning experience."
Bottom line: you're not alone.

For you surfers out there, when Campus Point is firing, there are few better waves. Its literally a 1/4 mile walk from campus. Crowded but really good.

These rankings really puzzle me. I've never seen UGA ranked ahead of us, I've never seen GT so low, and I've never seen West Point ranked above the Naval Academy? Maybe I've just been out of the loop a while.
