OT: A bowl game may soon be coming to Charleston, SC.

http://www.postandcourier.com/article/20150827/PC20/150829419

The next step for the Medal of Honor Bowl is NCAA certification, which will come next spring, McQueeney said. The seating capacity of 21,000 at Johnson Hagood Stadium will not be an issue, he said.

"The NCAA has said they will waiver that," he said.

I know several of us on here have discussed how great a city Charleston would be for a bowl game. Well it looks like that may be happening. It is too bad the ACC won't jump on it and it will fall to the MAC or Sunbelt I'm sure.

21k seems low for seating capacity

A game in Charleston would be great though. Great addition to an already great area

I think they would have to agree to expand at some point.

Is that the Citadel? Read the topic and first thought was "where?".

Yes. Drove by there last time I was there. Looks way bigger than 21k from the outside.

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

Seems about right for yet ANOTHER bowl game that could pit 6-6 versus 5-7 with the plethora of bowls already out there...

so what you're saying is UVA could possibly have a miracle season and make it to a bowl game at 5-7?

Onward and upward

Fwiw, there were 12 teams that were 6-6, another that was 6-7 and another that was 6-5 that made bowls last year. (two bowls had 6-6 v 6-6.) This year, one more bowl has been added, and if this one gets "certified" it could add even one more, upping the total to 41, adding 4 more teams. So yeah, in a miracle season, UVA could possibly maybe get invited.

Yet there was a team with 8 plus wins that didn't even get invited to a bowl.

which team was that?

Onward and upward

Not sure....
The teams that were eligible that didn't get invited last year were:
Middle Tenn St (6-6), Alabama-Birmingham (6-6), Ohio (6-6), Old Dominion (6-6), Texas State (7-5) and Temple (6-6).

ODU was ineligible as a first year FCS to FBS transitional school.

GA Southern, they were denied a waiver by the NCAA even though they won their conference.

To be perfectly fair that was not because of their wins or conference affiliation not having enough bowl tie ins, but all transitional FCS to FBS teams are left out in year one. App State went 7-6 and didn't go either, nor did 6-6 ODU.

However the NCAA could have given them a waiver as written into the bylaws. So to say there will be a team that is 5-7 playing in a bowl game I think is a reach.

They certainly could have. But going forward that also supposes there will be a continuous stream of transitional programs, which would then keep a 5-7 program out of a bowl that year.

I don't see it. Coastal Carolina is the only one moving in the next few years. JMu has no interest, Liberty too much baggage, and NDSU like being top dog.

What's wrong with more football? Outside the playoffs bowl games are all just "ANOTHER" game.

I've posted this in here before, but some of the bowls just aren't in places where a 20 year old kid wants to be at the holidays. Or needs to be. Used to be that the bowls were a REWARD for a good season. You finished 10-1, you got to go south to Florida for a bowl game. Awesome. Now, go 9-3, and you get to spend a week in Idaho in winter. Or Shreeveport. Or Yankee Stadium. Or another baseball field where you have to stand on the same sideline as your opponent. That's no reward.

True, if you make a bowl game it affords you the extra month of practice to get ready for next year. But instead of having 40 bowls, (you read that right, 80 teams of 128 will make a bowl, meaning a 5-7 team most likely will be playing.) where there isn't really a reward, simply allow all teams to practice for a certain period of time. OR, just eliminate 25 bowls, and allow the top 30 teams to be rewarded. Want to go to a bowl, and practice, WIN MORE. The practice is around the time of finals, the holidays, there are only a few teams that will make money on the bowl game, so why bother. These kids are student athletes, so let them be just that.

The only way a regular 5-7 team makes a bowl is if these options have already been used.

Teams finishing 6-6 with one win against a team from the lower Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), regardless of whether that FCS school meets NCAA scholarship requirements. Until now, an FCS win counted only if that opponent met the scholarship requirementsβ€”specifically, that school had to award at least 90% of the FCS maximum of 63 scholarship equivalents over a two-year period. In the 2012 season, programs in four FCS conferences cannot meet the 90% requirement (56.7 equivalents)β€”the Ivy League, which prohibits all athletic scholarships; the Patriot League and Pioneer Football League, which do not currently award football scholarships; and the Northeast Conference, which limits football scholarships to 38 equivalents.
6-6 teams with two wins over FCS schools.
Teams that finish 6-7 with loss number seven in their conference championship game (that has been eliminated by the conference championship waiver rule).
6-7 teams that normally play a 13-team schedule, such as Hawaii's home opponents. Although Hawaii normally plays a 13-game schedule, it only played 12 games this season.
FCS teams who are in the final year of the two-year FBS transition process, if they have at least a 6-6 record.
Finally, 5-7 teams that have a top-5 Academic Progress Rate (APR) score. This was later adjusted to allow other 5-7 teams to be selected thereafterβ€”in order of their APR. [11]

There are 40 bowls this year. 80 teams. This will come into play. There aren't going to be 80 teams that are 6-6 or better. And, yes, I understand how it works.

Honestly, does it even matter. Argue about how a 5-7 can be eligible, but should any team that doesn't win 9 games deserve to go bowling?

78 teams some bowl games are playoff games so don't need 80 teams.

Interesting

Bad stadium.
Awesome city.
I'm there.....it would be a great ACC lower tier bowl.
Maybe have a tie-in with the #15 SEC team, with Notre Dame having first right of refusal. /s

I'd rather have a bad stadium in a great city than an average stadium in a crap city, Detroit, El Paso, Shreveport and Birmingham.

What's wrong with Shreveport? I spent an enjoyable summer there on an internship.

Umm it's not a place I enjoy taking my family for a trip/bowl game. That sentiment is backed up by attendance numbers both in total number of bodies in the stadium and percentage of the stadium seats with butts in them.

Good!

There is no such thing as too many bowls. It is free OOC matchup football during a slow period of the sports year, hat isnt to love.

Pretty much. Now that all but two bowls are relegated to "just another game" status, the more the merrier!

Whew...its South Carolina. WVA would suck,

Even when you get skunked; fishing never lets you down. 🎣

I would absolutely love this. Charleston is my favorite place in the world. It would be a great place for a bowl game. I'm thinking of applying for jobs down there after I graduate in May.

I spent some years after VT there.

Do it.
So much happy.

Occupational therapy. It's a really great field with a ton of different job opportunities varying anywhere from school systems to nursing facilities to hospitals. Considering going for my masters at MUSC.

Lots of calling for that down here. The entire coast from Hilton Head to Charleston to Myrtle Beach is growing fast and a lot of them are older.

Jewish deli bagels? Portugese rolls? Real NYC pizza?

Those are the three things that I can't for the life of me find in Charlotte/Greensboro/Durham.

I'll have to try the first two sometime. Thanks for the links! All three of those foods are considered "you can't get them outside of NYC" by New Yorkers. Back in PA they just drove them in from NYC every morning.
