Well folks. It's clear that Lefty doesn't know how to adjust. Bud made adjustments and the D made plays to give the offense opportunities, but, our lack of running and ability to adjust cost the game. Last week, they were ripped off by the refs, but, this week, they were outplayed and Lefty was outcoached.
O line couldn't run block, couldn't pass block.. that kind of limits what you can do....Though I have no idea why they wouldn't roll Motley out

I can't bring myself to be mad at the defense for only giving up 17 points. Usually that gets us a win.
On the other side, though, O-line play was horrible which affected everything else, and Motley should not have gone back out there when we got the ball back.
We have some tough quarterbacks - have to be because no blocking whatsoever. So Frank, what was the new game plan for the second half? So sad to see the Hokies revert to an average program.
The O Line needs to turn in their potato masher until they earn the right to carry it again.

The defense today struggled early and then adjusted. They stepped up when they needed to. They improved from last week.
The offense today has me angry. Shane Beamer's rotating every play is a joke. Leoffler has 0 capability to adjust and adapt. Not sure why we could push OSU around on the OL and then get 9 yards this week. McGate should have been pulled way earlier in the game as bad as he was playing. Just horrible job by the offensive staff.

Unless, Frank tells Lefty to shut JC down, go big, use Edmunds and throw away the sweep, this season is done.
Right now it's not Lefty making the decision AFAIK. All coaching interviews and comments point to Shane being the one making the calls regarding RB rotation and Lefty is working the plays around that. But I'll throw a bigger factor out there: if someone on the damn coaching staff doesn't whip our O-line into shape (instead of that flag football blocking we had today), neither the RB rotation nor the OC play calling will have any impact on any W's we might be able to scrape together the rest of this "regular" season. Yeah, you heard me Frank.

100 yard of total offense....worse since 1987! Don't let the door hit you on the way out Lefty. It was 2nd and 16 on every drive after a momentum crushing jet sweep on first down. I will continue to watch every play of every game cause I will always go down with the ship but the jet sweeps have got to stop.

Agreed. But I think Frank made a bad hire with Loeffler. I've been a Lefty supporter, but I'm starting to arrive at the opinion that he's just not a good OC. His playcalling is very predictable. I think the style of offense and complexity level that he is trying to run isn't going to be successful in college unless you have an elite QB, OL, and talent surrounding them. Lawson has been the backup for weeks now, but they don't put him in when Motley is shaken up because they've been giving all the reps to Motley in practice just so he is prepared. That just doesn't sound like a winning formula at all.
Definitely not going to get anybody better to be our OC at this point in time. At this stage of the game it's either complete coaching overhaul or none.
Pitt should be fucking embarrassed they only beat us by 3 after how bad we coached and played.

Loeffler didn't adjust all game and Shane continuously avoided using the only running back who was having success (McMillan). Put that alongside of motley's lack of talent and us not subbing out our abysmal linemen and boom-- you get less than 100 yards of offense over the course of an ENTIRE game.

No he has two WR and two fantastic TEs that could have run quick routes over the middle for Motley to get the ball out. A Two TE set also doesn't signal run or pass to the defense.
Lost for words at this point. This program is a joke at the moment and I am starting to hate the fact that I paid my hard earned money for NC State tickets.

Hello, first ever post here on the site. Couple of thoughts here:
Motley, as much heart as he shows, is not going to be a successful quarterback at this level especially with the atrocious offensive line that is supposedly trying to "protect" him.
The announcers stated that the Hokies didn't put in Lawson because they only had "limited packages" prepared for him. He's been the freaking back-up for 5 weeks, how is he not prepared to go in?!? Whatever they did have ready for him was still worth a shot after the crap that we saw the first 3 and a half quarters.
The defense is still incredibly inconsistent, with motuapuaka looking like an animal on one play and then looking afraid to hit anyone the very next time someone comes near him.
Shane needs to pick a single running back, and that running back needs to be McMillan. Coleman got the first look that he deserved based off of last year but has blown away that chance, and edmunds hasn't fared any better.
Loeffler's play calling is so predictable with motley as quarterback that my dad and I call the plays before they happen most of the time. If we can do that, I'm pretty sure the coaches on the Pitt sideline who get paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to do that for a living are going to have some success
On the bright side, we definitely won the kicking game today. Slye made a couple of long ones, Hughes punted well all day including the first punt downed inside the 5 in I don't know how many years for the Hokies. We blocked a kick and almost blocked a punt early on, and were unlucky to not recover a muffed punt.
Overall, the worst offensive performance from a coaching standpoint as well as from an execution standpoint from our players that I've ever seen. We'll be lucky to even get into field goal range next Friday if we play like we did today.

This is right along the lines of what I dislike most about the way we manage our program. Young players need to be challenged to get better. Lawson was a four star QB out of high school and when we saw him against Furman, he could barely get the ball out to his receivers. I don't think he forgot how to play football in his first month in Blacksburg, but I think we have coddled him into thinking he needs to play perfectly Loeffler's way instead of remembering he's a damn fine quarterback who can go in and use his skills to effect positive results for the team.
the read option and the jet sweep take so long to develop, its painfully to watch the O try and run the ball. What I would give to see VT line up behind center and give a handoff to RB so they can have a bit of momentum when they reach the line of scrimmage.
The east/west nature of our running attack looks like the glaring problem to me. That shit only works against bad teams and demonstrates a lack of aggressiveness. I loved Pitts offense.
It's hard to watch this team try to be a spread based offense.....Go back to power football....Please
Half of the sweeps should have been kept by Motley. The DE jumped right to the RB and left a huge hole and Motley handed it off anyways. The DE is unblocked for a reason and it is called a read

Why are we running so many jet sweeps and zone reads, when SS expressed his desire to be a straight-ahead running team? Even went so far as to have the OL gain weight, etc.

I want to blame injuries or even a lack of talent, but I keep coming back to the coaching. Foster still not being able to stop mobile QB's, the only reason we had success in the second half was because they got away from the option attack. The play calling was horrendous and the rotating of the RBs is so absurd considering Travon is the only one doing anything. Also, Motley looked like a QB2 today, he held on the ball way too long. Granted the O-line played like crap. I don't feel good about anything Hokies right now and it fucking sucks.
Imagine next year if there aren't changes with Shane and the RBs. Edmunds, McMillian, Sam, Shai, Juice, and McClease all getting even carries.
The OL looked trashier than Kesha. Motley had no business being in there after taking those hits. He was clearly injured.. Got to think about the kid's health. I feel like these decisions shouldn't even be a question, but here we are. I feel horrible for Motley getting beat up like that..

I am an old Hokie. I have been here before I pains me to say it but the Beamer era is OVER. Whit has a huge job in front of him now. Time to look at our scheme and recruiting. Build to a brighter future. I like much of the young talent Time to get them on the field

I have become a big fan of Brendan but don't try to make him something he's not. Let me move out of the pocket and he's got a chance for a completion or a throw away. 2nd and 17 is tough position to be in for any QB.

im usually pretty optimistic about Tech but I don't know. I say the rest of the games are 50/50 at best from here on out. I don't blame any players. Although I don't know what the hell the OL was doing today. Shane needs to go. He won't though as long as frank is there. I think Frank has this season and next and that's it. Hopefully chad Morris or Tom Herman are still available by then. We need an exciting hire at HC to get life back into the recruiting cycle. He can keep Bud and company cause I still have faith in them but the Beamers are on the downside IMO as far as the coaches go. How many years are we going to say "next year"? Is this another year that we look back and say "but all our losses were within 7"? Guess what, they am were all still losses. I honestly don't know any team on the schedule that we can say is a win. This sucks so bad.
Must admit I agree, typically it seems one game phase is letting other down, but...wow I'm not sure which phase was the one getting let down
I like to keep optimistic as well, but I think Beamer needs to hang it up after this year for the sake of Virginia Tech. I love Frank and all that he has done for Virginia Tech, so it is very hard to write that. Unfortunately, there is no charisma or fire in the program right now and Beamer does not appear to be capable of relighting the fire. I'm sure any potential recruits can see that and I'd hate to see a more barren cupboard whenever the next guy comes in. This is a really stinky place that our program is in, but I'm confident that Whit will be able to bring us through and hire the right guy to bring this program back to winning ACC Championships.
As far as today's game goes, it showed how much we miss Brewer. Motley appeared to have no idea who to throw to based on coverages. Granted, I'm an arm chair quarterback who has never played organized football in my life, so I probably have no right saying that. Early in the game he had Malleck wide open 15 yards downfield on a 3rd and long and threw the ball to a well covered Phillips near the line of scrimmage. The next series or two later they run the same routes, and Motley throw an INT while trying to hit Malleck (probably looking for him as he was told how wide open he was Last time) on the same right he was wide open on last time. He clearly missed the secondary player sitting on the route. If Malleck's main read is covered, he appears to get happy feet and locks up. Can't wait for Brewer to get back. I don't think one single back played 3 straight downs in a series. It is very maddening to say the least. I'm just hoping and praying we beat UVA. It is shaping up to be a long season.

I know I'm probably reading too much into it, but with his frustration about not being able to play, and the ineptitude at the current RB usage (and our overall performance)... just wouldn't shock me if he's considering his options.
