According to several media outlets Randy Edsall will be let go from Maryland. I have to think that can only help us in DMV Recruiting (esp Tino Ellis).

UMDVTI kind of fail to see the point mid-season short of bad or criminal behavior, its not like you can make a blockbuster hire until bowl season starts and you can start interviewing all the coordinators and such.
There's one situation where I think it would be a good idea, although I don't know if it applies to Maryland here. Let's assume you have a long-tenured assistant (a Bud Foster type) or an up-and comer (Dabo Swinney, perhaps), who many think is the obvious choice for next head coach, but others aren't sure about his ability to run the whole show. When you show the current HC the door, you now have the opportunity to promote this assistant to interim coach for an audition of sorts and see how he performs. If it doesn't go well, this assistant can return to his previous position, assuming the next HC wants to retain him. If it does go well, you've found your next head coach and managed to maintain some sort of continuity in your program.
i still think Tino Ellis sticks with his commitment more out of state pride rather than the coaching staff. but what do i know? LOL
I still think VT should apply pressure there.
And on all of the Our Lady of Good Counsel High School prospects. Make it a pipeline. Always good talent there.
I agree 100%. Just reading what they post on Twitter, I think there's a 0% chance of any of them flipping to us from Dematha.
That may be true, but we should keep trying.
They didn't go to UMD because of Edsall.
Which is the problem right? If we still had a real shot, we would hope that's why they went there.
A year before Randy Edsall left UConn for UMD he had a running back leave early for the draft. Randy didn't like this and made the RB get up in front of his teammates and explain why he was abandoning them.
When he left for UMD, he told his team about it on conference call after making them sit on hold for 30 minutes. He claimed that "circumstances" kept him from addressing them in person.
While I don't love UMD, I'm glad to see him get canned.
How can you not love those traffic cone uniforms?
That's one step above how Bobby Petrino left the Falcons.
Yeah, I remember that. What a scumbag move.
Jordan Todman is the name, plays for Pitt now. One of the best players in Massachusetts state football history (which aint much).
Guess we know one coach that will be available!
***ducks***
Bud to the Turtles? *ducks*
You shut your whore mouth.
Edit: Maybe a touch aggressive, but the comment stands.
I see no problem with this statement. I'd say you demonstrated admirable restraint. (although you do lose style points for lack of a Ron Burgundy gif)
I'm going to pretend I didn't read that...Denial ain't just a river in Egypt...
Am I the only one who immediate inserts Oregon into sentences when people do this?
no...no you're not....not anymore at least
thnx
This actually wouldn't bother me too much. I'm of the opinion that Frank will be gone by the end of the year. If that happens I imagine Whit will pursue coaches with more HC experience than Bud but I'd still like to see Bud get his shot somewhere as an HC (if it's what he wants, of course). If Bud is not the next HC at VT I would assume that the likelihood of him being retained under another head coach is pretty low. If we're gonna lose Bud by virtue of Beamer no longer being the Head Hokie I'd generally be okay with him going to UMD since they're no longer part of the ACC and we'll never have to play against him.
Also, if a new HC is hired and he's not interested in retaining Bud (or Bud isn't interested in working for him) and he decides to leave for UMD that may take us off the hook for the rest of the Money due Bud. That might free up some funds to help sway a top talent coach to BBurg.
At least the Terps have the extra cash to payoff the 3 year extension they signed Edsall to in JUNE!
#B1GMoney
Correction: Under Armour $$$$
They were sponsored by Under Armour while with the ACC and still left for the B1G for more money.
So I think B1G money is more appropriate here.
Interestingly, if you look at the base of the columns on the Beamer Barn, you see donor plaques.... one of them says 'Stuart Plank Family'. Yes that Plank family. Stuart is Kevin's older bro and played OL at VT under Dooley. So we do have some UA money around here it turns out..
Let's make Kevin Plank an honorary VT grad and get the money flowing to our football program. I could live with the ugly ass UA uniforms for some solid $$$.
The article at Testudo Times says that only $500k of that $7.5 million extension is guaranteed. They're on the hook for this year's salary, but the extension is pretty much a non-factor, financially speaking. That's some bad negotiating there, Randy. I'd suggest finding a new agent before your next gig.
According to a friend of mine (UMd grad), that's exactly why they gave him the extension. Edsall gambled he would be better quicker, so he got more upfront and it lowered his buyout number.
They did his contract right for them by only guaranteeing $500,000. Not a huge buyout.
I know. But it's still $$$. And considering they wouldn't fire Fridge because of any buyout, then went to the B1G because they couldn't make a profit in the ACC, that move allowed them to fire him less than 4 months after an extension.
Almost a good a move as Florida extending Muschamp after 2012.
This along with some other tweets about how the entire Dematha team should be together in college.
Lol. Dwayne Haskins on Twitter speculating the Twerps go after Chip Kelly. Edsall has only been fired for a few
yearshours, and his recruits already are looking for the next thing.years? It's about time they start looking after that long...
Haha! Freudian slip there. Meant to say hours, but Maryland hasn't been going anywhere, so it seems like people have been calling for him to be fired for a while.
yeah just bustin' chops
Has he actually been fired yet?
I'm not sure. The articles say they are preparing to fire him after the Ohio State game. So I guess his bosses told him, "Hey, Randy. So we're going to fire you. You're not fired YET, but just letting you know you will be fired after the game." So semi-fired?
So what happens if they beat anOSU?
Randy Edsall at the moment:
I don't think it could ever happen, but still...
Not gonna lie, I kind of want to see this happen. College Park will be burned to the ground and the shit show will follow would be great entertainment.
This is just entertaining. How the hell did he screw his own shitter out of it?
LOLTerps. Should that be a thing?
Yeah
I think we should be careful... we could become LOLVT if things don't go our way...
Why? We have had a consistently better football program than Maryland. To me, the only way a team becomes an LOL team if they are consistently mediocre. We may be mediocre now, but we had been a consistent top 25 team pre-2012 all the way back to the mid 90's. And all it takes is a solid coaching hire and we should be back to being an consistent top 25 team again.
AND we don't prostitute ourselves to other conferences, no matter how uncompetitive we might end up.
Ummm, the A-10, and the Big East might argue that point.
Well he did specify that they did it despite the prospect of not being competitive in the bigger conference.
We joined the Big East in 91 and won our first conference championship 4 years later (then twice more before leaving in '04). We joined the ACC and promptly won the conference and repeated 4 times in our first 7 seasons.
If you're one of the top teams in your conference and you move up and within a few seasons become even a middling team in the bigger conference, I'd say that's a non-whorish move. Maryland was a lower-to-middling team in the ACC and is destined to be dead last in the B1G. Whore move, UMd, whore move.
Purdue might disagree with Maryland about being dead last in the B!G ten.
well there's a lot of season left, but I guess if we could claim co-big east champions back in the day, they can claim co-B1G bottom feeders with Purdue.
If you switch conferences solely (and VERY publicly) for more conference payout money and knowing that you'll likely be on par with the Indiana schools the vast majority of the time...
if we don't turn things around this year, it's 4 straight years of mediocrity... that's pretty consistent.
Yeah but Maryland has been mediocre much longer than 4 years. Plus, even if we have been mediocre we still have had made it to bowl games. Maryland has had some 3 win seasons.
I see it as even if we have been mediocre the last couple of seasons, we still have been better than most with our before track record. I don't see how people can call us LOLVT, if people see us that way than they should look at every other school in the ACC other Clemson, Florida State, and maybe Miami the same way too.
Hopefully Whit makes a solid hire (which he should) that can return us to being a top 25 team soon.
Correction...Maryland has been mediocre - or worse - for much longer.
Just take a look at the records in below posts for Friedgen and Edsell. Since 2001, they've had 7 seasons worse than and 2 seasons as "mediocre" as Beamer's worst 2 seasons since 1993.
VT fans don't realize how truly rare it is to just have a few "mediocre" seasons. Almost every team goes through worse spells and few have had as lengthy a period of success without so much as one or more truly bad seasons. Try complaining to a fan from almost any other school about the misery of 7-6 and 8-5 and see how much sympathy you get...
Get Fuller up to Maryland to recruit, its poaching season.
Which Fuller?
(the correct answer should be "all four")
Well played.
Kevin Plank is a force.... likelihood MD gets a big upgrade.... if they don't have the hire lined up we may get a few month reprieve
but I'd say MD will get a very good HC ... and we may be competing for the same guy
I think VT is in a better position to bring in a top HC than UMD. For one, UMD may struggle to pull away a decent coach mid season. Or they may not. We'll see, I guess.
VT has better facilities and is closer to some pretty rich recruiting grounds. VT has an easier path to the playoffs. VT has much better fan support. VT has an AD who has shown willingness to invest in the program and assist the coaches in every way possible to improve the product.
All of those points are true, though you're missing that College Park is a dump...
That being said, money talks. B1G + Under Armour means they can outbid us. They're not quite the Nike East that they want to be, but I don't want to go head to head with them for any coaches.
I hate the thought of it...but... a few guys really know college football... some have similar alma maters in ACC on hotseat. Socially I'd probably go to more MD games as I have quite a few MD friends and it is closer. I'd rather make the trip to VT as my kids get older.
The smart money is on UMD to rise up. Again, intellectually I think the program has gotten kinda lucky as I think many MD friends detest the AD, detest his hires...
will Plank get what he wants or will the AD f this up? Again smarter money than mine is that MD bumps up this year, because Plank wants it to.
My money is on the AD to do more dumb things and try to keep Plank out of it. Never thought it could be worse than Yow, but guess I (And the twerps!) was way wrong.
I honestly thought this move was going to come way earlier than this. But then again Maryland fired the Fridge after a really nice bounce back 8-4 season.
And do you think we could keep this a little quieter??? Don't want to give any ideas to loluva.........
Maybe they'll hire Edsall?
We couldn't be that lucky...
I don't know...we're 2 for 2 after Welsh.
It's not saying much, but Edsall would be a big upgrade over London
Shane to UMd???
anybody have UMD's AD's phone number?
I think VT's first response is "QUICK, CALL THEIR RECRUITS!"
How do you know they aren't relieved that Edsall is gone????
Seriously. They may have been hedging against it anyway.
There are only a handful of coaches that have the kind of pull to draw a kid no matter the school. With the Under Armour money, they may be getting some kids that will go there no matter who is the coach.
Suddenly, I'm like "REALLY?"
Also, it doesn't hurt to try amigo, it doesn't hurt to try.
Meanwhile, a Twitter account called "TerpsInsiderFB" (with a grand total of ~40 followers) is trying to spread the rumor that Chip Kelly has already been hired to replace Edsall, and that an announcement is pending. #MARINADES
I heard he was bringing Drew Harris with him to College Park.
My response to that twitter account below:
I could never see this happening.
I bet this is also that Hokie2398561237843187 guy
Bruce Feldman has linked Chip Kelly to Maryland because of UA money. Really a baseless assumption, because any school that wants Kelly is going to be throwing a lot of money at him. If Maryland's program was so stacked with UA cash already, then why did they have to sell out to the B1G to keep their athletics programs afloat? Plus, why would he want to go to a school that is, arguably, the worst team in the divison by far? Immediately going head to head with Meyer, Dantonio, Franklin, and Harbaugh probably doesn't sound great with a program that has little fan support and is historically bad compared to those.
Yeah, I mean it would be totally logical for Chip to choose a perennial powerhouse like Maryland over a terrible program like Texas right?
/s
Yet another example of the "grass isn't greener"...
And can someone explain to me how "I have to think that can only help us in DMV Recruiting (esp Tino Ellis)" with regard to Edsall, but pushing Beamer out wouldn't have the same impact on VT?
Tino is staying at Maryland 100%.. along with Dwayne Haskins and the rest of their squad.
The fact that Edsall is being fired from Um after 5 years says a lot about the AD and his expectations.
2011 Maryland 2–10 1–7 6th (Atlantic)
2012 Maryland 4–8 2–6 5th (Atlantic)

2014 Maryland 7–6 4–4 3rd (East) L Foster Farms

looks like steady improvement to me...
Not if you see the "before" part of the picture...

Did the Fridge coach the bowl game in 2010?
I can't help but think that 2004 record might be linked to ACC expansion and it's effect on recruiting...kinda like our results since we knew Pitt was coming? Seems like there was at least one year of suck before that was a thing...
More specifically - Fridge's demise will be forever linked to his buddy Frank joining the ACC and taking over.
That Fridge was fired and Edsall was hired to begin with says even more about UMd fans' delusional expectations...
Ugh I still can't believe they beat us in 2013. Still pissed about that -_-
What are you talking about? We never played Maryland in 2013. Nope. SHUT UP
I'm noticing that we haven't played a lot of games these last few years....
Yeah, it's really weird how our schedule has so many Open dates. Whit needs to look at this, leaving too much cash on the table just to be undefeated vs. Open.
#FIREWHIT/s
I can confirm this.
I was told they would play be playing Maryland, drove 4 hrs to see the game, and when I got to Blacksburg there was no game that day.
Does anOSU cover the 33.5 this weekend????
(And, does Umd promote the OC to HC, just so he won't be the one calling plays any longer???!!!)
I LOL'ed
Edsall getting fired is the worst news ever. Almost...almost...the same deal as London at Uva. Keep him there. He stinks.
With UA money they will make a good hire. One less qualified coach for us this winter when we are hiring. I hope they get Chip Kelly. And not Tom Herman.
And all those DMV boys don't care who the coach is - not one bit. They are going to MD. Only way they won't is if the new coach doesn't want them. But that is unlikely.
This just reminds me that VT lost to Maryland a few years ago.
Sigh.
Is that victory the pinnacle of Edsall's career to date? I didn't follow him that closely at UConn.
I dunno, but it was certainly one of several unremarkable low points for the other team, and a sign of things to come at that time.
It's official. Maryland just announced he is GONE. First coaching casualty of the 2015 season.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/terrapins-insider/wp/2015/10/11/rand...
MERRYLAND will have to pay him about 4.6 million.
But...they covered the 33 point spread. That's a moral victory.
I think the moral victory was that a lot of fans wanted a coaching change.
Delusional Maryland fans doing what they do best...
That 2013 game still upsets me greatly
Speaking of money, did Maryland ever pony up the ACC leaving money?
The ACC kept $31.4 million in conference revenue, and Maryland didn't have to pay more in, according to the settlement they reached.
