So SMU and Houston face off tonight on ESPN2.
Two potential future Hokie HC's battle it out
SMU coached by Chad Mooris, former Clemson OC, and Houston coached by Tom Herman, former OSU OC.
I hope these guys are available when it comes to find a new HC. I would be excited for either of these guys to come to Blacksburg as the head ball coach.
Should be an interesting game.

I would be excited for either of them as well. They're both on my short wishlist. That being said, I don't think we've got a snowball's chance in hell at landing Chad Morris. Tom Herman might be persuaded though. Bryan Harsin, who I also think would be hard to bring in from Boise, is on that list as well.
I honestly like Tom Herman a lot more than Chad Morris.
I think he would be a great get. And we might actually have a shot with him too...which is exciting
I feel the opposite... Chad Morris's offense is my favorite offense I've seen - both fun to watch and effective. Watching his wide receivers block is truly impressive.
That being said - I'd be perfectly ok with Herman.

I agree, I'm pretty sure he wants to stay in Texas. But, I'd take him.
I'm more confident that Chad Morris will stay in Texas than Beamer stepping down in the next 2 years. He's not leaving Texas IMO
I think what sets Herman apart from Morris to me is that he is the better recruiter. He has already gotten two top 50 recruits (one five star) to commit to Houston(!) since he's been there.
That's super impressive. I do believe SMU is a harder sell than Houston, but any time a non-P5 program gets a top 50 recruit, it's a big deal.
yeah that's legit! I would love to get Herman here. Houston just scored pretty easily too (granted, I don't know much about SMU's defense...I'm sure it's not great)
Just looked at their recruiting class, it looks one of them decommitted (they were both DTs I believe.) But the 5 star is still committed and is a borderline top 10 recruit in the country. Houston overall currently has the 35th best class in the country right now, which is impressive.
And he learned program management from Urban Meyer
Disclaimer - I'm not on the "we need a new HC" bandwagon...but if I had to choose between the two, I would take Tom Herman over Chad Morris.
Morris is a Texan, born and raised, and if he were to become the VT coach, I feel he would still jump at the first chance to coach a Power 5 Texas school.
Don't know much about Herman. Google says he's born in Ohio and went to college in California. No idea where his loyalties lies.
Regardless, when we start looking for a new head coach, I want someone who wants to be at VT for the long haul and not be in a coaching carousel every 3 - 5 years.

I know he is a Texas guy, but are there quotes/rumors supporting this desire to coach at a Texas school? I'm not calling anyone out, I am genuinely curious if there is some hard evidence to back these (reasonable, admittedly) assumptions. Personally, unless shown other evidence, I imagine he would stick around a successful VT program if he was at the head of it.
He talks about texas high school football alot...in his announcement speech and interview for SMU even, "I'm a Texas High school coach."

I don't think you have to pay him that much if the Eagles fire him. Philadelphia would still have to pay him the final two years of his contract ($6.5 mil, $13 mil total). Likely any school is going to use that against him when negotiating his salary, if he does actually come back to college. So that probably lowers his commanding salary significantly for the next few years. Nobody is going to pay him $6.5 mil when he is already making that much from elsewhere. Would be absurd and upset the coaching market.
His salary from a new employer has nothing to do with other income he may be receiving. That is, unless he wants to take a cut to go to what he perceives to be a better situation, because he has other income.
Chip becoming one of the highest paid college coaches would have no impact on the coaching market because frankly I'd think most people find that reasonable.
He wouldn't just become one of the highest-paid college coaches. If another school matched his salary from the Eagles, he would be making almost double Nick Saban, who is the highest. I just don't see that happening. Any good AD is not just going to throw money at someone for the sake of throwing money. They will offer what they think it takes to get him to come, not just make absurdly high offers.
I'm not sure I follow. Saban makes $7 million if I'm not mistaken so Chip at $6.5 million wouldn't be double.
If you're still talking about his new proposed salary combined with any residual owed from the Eagles, it's completely irrelevant. You are compensated by your current employer for the job you're currently doing.
Edit: Also, I absolutely agree with you that teams will only pay when they think they need to in order to get him.
I'm pretty sure that there are caveats to the payout in the contract so if he gets a $3.5M offer then he might not have to be paid by the Eagles. When we hired Loeffler and Grimes I recall them making very little from VT so that they could still get paid out by Auburn. I'd expect something similar with Chip. The first 2 years the new team will pay much less than the rest of the contract.

That is interesting, I hadn't thought about that. I wonder if there's any such language in his Eagles contract. If so, that would definitely give whatever schools are interested in him some leverage. I don't see $6-$6.5 mil being the pricetag for the school if any such language exists.
I'm not sure the eagles get rid of Kelly this year that and I don't think we can match a bigger schools offer. That being said I don't know who else will be in the market for a coach at a reputable P5 football program. I think if this were Beamers last year we would be the best school on the market. Everyone else either has a decent coach or is in the first couple of years with a new coach. Maybe Arkansas.
Early in this game , but I like both offenses , defense not so much.
Always wonder if the offenses are so dynamic or the defenses are just that bad.

Like that decision to go for it on fourth down by Morris there. Probably too long for his kicker to make it from there, and likely going to end up as a touchback punting from there. Might as well go for it. You either get the first or it works out like a punt if it's intercepted or you don't make it.
Consider me impressed by Tom Herman. You can see where Ohio State's offense went this year. He has Houston humming. Probably not a great defensive challenge with SMU, but they are executing at a high level. He knows how to get athletes in space. I love it, kind of a smashmouth spread. Committed to a strong OL and run game.

But man, with injuries both my Hokies and my Cowboys are playing like shit this year, and that's kind of put a damper on my excitement.
Anyway, to add to the discussion...I'd prefer Chad Morris, although, I'll admit that I don't know much about Tom Herman other than he was the OC at Ohio State last year, and he's got potential.
