WAY OT: Today I discovered how badly Kidney stones hurt

Being a first responder and EMT I have taken many people to the hospital who have complained of kidney stones, yet until today I didn't understand the true pain they were in. I had some pain this morning that I just mistook for gas cramps and went to the dentist. While driving home I had to stop,on the side of the interstate and throw up from the pain. After finally getting home I realized some thing really was wrong. My wife had to leave the hospital and come home pick me off the floor and take me to the ER. I'm finally back home but I'm not looking forward to passing more of these little shits. It sucks to get old (32). As my nurse said I'd rather give birth again than have kidney stones.

Man, I'm sorry for that.
IV/po liquids-as much as possible, IM toradol and then dilaudid and phenergan are your best friends.
Get a dose of flomax in you as well, if you can.

'This too shall pass.'

This guy knows what's up

Man, I would never wish kidney stones on anyone.

We get kidney stone patients in our clinic, ...the patients seem MISERABLE in every sense of the word.

Speaking of not really understanding pts pain, I always kind of downplayed patients when they came in for migraines....until about 3 weeks ago. I got my first migraine.

Lasted 10 days. Light sensitivity, nausea, no sleep, vomiting, killer eye and head pain. ...I wanted to cut my own damn head off. I pray I never get one again.

From about fifth grade until about 10th grade I would get at least one migraine every month. Doctors never could figure out why and the meds I had to prevent them only work d about half the time. Absolutely miserable time of my life.

Here's a strange remedy my boss (charge nurse) gave me but it worked.

Eat asparagus and drink two liters of Coke as fast as possible/tolerated.

Asparagus will pass trough kidneys and Coke is acidic

I have passed 8 so far and fear I inherited from my dad who has chronic kidney stones/partial kidney removal d/t damage caused by stones.

Best of luck and I hope you don't have anymore!!

I've had multiple, they are very painful. This too shall pass...errrr!

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

I've had 2 of them. Wouldn't wish them on anyone.

Well, maybe Matt Ryan.

If you play it, they will win.

I approve of this statement.

I had some pain this morning that I just mistook for gas cramps and went to the dentist.

Well I hope you learned your lesson about going to the dentist!

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

Hopefully you don't visit a proctologist when your teeth hurt.

I'm no Mike London, so, no.

Kidney stones are bad m****r f*****s.

Indeed. We lost a friend to a kidney stone. The stone caused a kidney infection, which spread to his bloodstream, and he died in ICU. Scary little boogers.

"Tajh Boyd over the middle . . . and it's caught for an interception! Michael Cole, lying flat on his back, ARE YOU KIDDING???"

So you have Hokie Stones? Been there twice myself and doc says it will happen again. Painful and unpredictable! Sorry man

To make it even worse in June I cut out of my diet, sweet tea and every other liquid but water and the occasional milk for cereal. Yet I get these now.

Damn dude, that's gotta be terrifying.

Sorry to hear it.

I get 'em. I've had several surgeries. I've also had the "someone please come get me and take me to the hospital" experience more than once. It's not fun, but don't feel like you're alone.

Good luck, and drink plenty of water.

When I hear folks talking about kidney stones, I'm reminded of one I saw when helping a chemistry teacher with a summer program. He had a sample of a kidney stone in a jar, that he had obtained when he worked at a hospital many years before. Now, this kidney stone that he had was about the size of a fist. And it was only half of the stone, because the other half had been ground up for testing.

The largest confirmed kidney stone was over 2 lb and the size of a coconut.

Thanks everyone for the kind words and advice. Hopefully I will get these demon spawn out of my body soon with as little girly screaming as possible.

i had kidney stones the day after the OSU game. It is the worst pain ive ever had in my life. Haven't been to the hospital in 15 years, and it was enough to make me go. The medication they gave me did nothing. Some say it is as worse if not worse then child birth. When it finally passes, you look at that little pebble the size of a pencil shaving and cannot believe that thing caused so much pain.

You have a 50% chance that you will get them again if you have had them. I was told I needed more Vitamin D for it helps offset the calcium consumption or something. Tons of people now a days are Vitamin D deficient.

@VTimHokie85

Vitamin D is a fat soluble mineral.
People have been convinced that fat is bad.
More people drinking skim milk, if any dairy at all and things like that will impact vitamin D availability for digestion.

No fat in your foods that are normally enhanced with vitamin D?
Welcome stones.
Ask your doc about supplementing vitamin D with meals containing significant fat.
Good excuse to eat macaroni and cheese.

A word of advice. Drink lots of water, and go for the pain medicine at the first sign of pain, rather than later. If you wait until you're in extreme pain, it's too late. Early, and you've got a chance. Hydration helps immensely.

That's the thing since I got my Fitbit in May im drinking 64-80 plus ounces everyday and not soda no tea nothing else and now I get them.

You sewed those seeds over years. Often, they come to light when people work out a lot, or increase their fitness regimen. My first serious bout came when I started training for a triathlon.

For me, it's not the drinks that are the culprit, but a protein-heavy diet.

Protein heavy yea that's my normal diet BEEF is my weakness.

When I looked their list of foods to avoid/eat in moderation, it was like a list of everything I eat. Meat, cheese, and nuts make up 90% of my diet.

Protein-heavy diet --> reduced calcium absorption and increased acidity in the kidney (including oxalic acid) --> kidney stones (calcium oxalate)

Eat some carbs.

"Exit light..."

Yup. Or drink lots of water.

Kidney Stones. They'll get after ya.
