My opinion is that it was never meant to be snapped, and the snapper screwed up. I think it was an attempt to maybe get a cheap offside penalty on the D, or take the delay of game and punt as normal. That's just my guess though.

Life long Colts fan that has been through it all with Captain Comeback Jim Harbaugh, Bunch of nobodies, Manning, and now Luck!
I fully expect there to be changes after this year with the Colts. I like Pagano but he and the GM are not getting along and I think he is going through the motions to get through the year then he is gone, which in turn means Pep is gone (Wink wink, VT Head Coach)
Can't blame him though, defensive minded coach that can't get anything he needs on the defensive side of the ball but lets keep adding to the Offensive side with over the hill players (except Gore) and a piss poor offensive line since Jeff Saturday left.
I think what you are seeing on the field is a mixed bag of who gives a shit we will still make the playoffs cause of division sucks and a continual middle finger reminder from Pagano to the front office.
Honestly, last night was not a shock.

I actually saw a similar play this weekend for a 2 pt conversion. Can't remember the game, it just came up in a score highlights interruption. Anyway, the guy who took the snap immediately threw a screen pass and the entire offensive line (less the center) just bull dozed the defenders into the end zone cause they had a huge numbers advantage.

This one? What's crazy about the play is the center snaps directly to the side to a HUGE offensive lineman lined up in the backfield and they just bulldoze into the end zone.

As I understand it, they were trying to do some type of the "Swinging Gate" trick play. The point is to confuse the defense so either they all follow the pack and you can run forward with no one in front of you or they mostly stay put and you get a screen pass with a butt-ton of blockers. Plus you're hoping the confusion gets you a penalty like offsides or illegal substitution or too many men on the field.
Problem was, they didn't line up quite right and the Pats responded in exactly the right way. Instead of giving up and taking a timeout or delay of game, they tried anyway...and failed miserably.

It was a bad play that was designed for failure. No, seriously, it was an illegal formation due to not a single eligible receiver being lined up to the left of Center, so even if they somehow got it to work and got the 3 yards for first down, it still would have been flagged and they still would have had a resulting 4th and 8. In the absolute best case scenario, they catch NE with 12 men on the field, and they still end up with 4th and 3 due to offsetting penalties.
And its not like Indy was out there confused as hell. They lined up, got set, ready, and snapped the ball to epic failure. From the top down, its the worst playcall in the history of the NFL. Not often you see a play called where its designed to draw a penalty on yourself.

I thought they would have had an illegal formation penalty for having only 1 guy on the LOS. I didn't know that you had to have players on both sides of center..technically

Well that's the thing, they actually did have the appropriate number of players lined up at the LOS, its just that the center of that LOS moved out to the right when everyone shifted over. The Colts problem is that they didn't design the play to have an eligible receiver out left, which made the play itself illegal. As soon as the play was called, they were destined to have a penalty called on them... stupid.
And I have to say, it is interesting how this play never works out. You'd think it should actually have a lot of success if you run it right. Have the backup QB take the snap from shotgun, and immediately get the pass out to the trailing person behind the 'gate'. At that point you have 7 guys in front of him usually tasked with blocking about 5 guys, who usually are confused on what's happening. If you practice it enough, the QB should be able to get the ball off immediate, and it should result in big gains because of the numbers in your favor. And yet, time and time again, the play ends up in miserable failures.

I could have sworn the announcers (Chris Collinsworth and Al Michaels) pointed out on the replay that nobody was on the LOS. I don't remember them saying anything about having players to the left of center. I know that most announcers aren't very well versed when it comes to football but I have to believe those two know a thing or two about the sport.
