GT WR leaves team

Georgia Tech wide receiver Micheal Summers has left the team, head coach Paul Johnson said Monday.

"Just said he didn't want to play anymore," Johnson said, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Ken Sugiura.

A redshirt junior, Summers is second on the Yellow Jackets in receptions (12), and third in receiving yards (178) and touchdown receptions (two). He has started and played in seven of nine games this season.

It's telling when the 3rd leading receiver only has 2 TD's.

Georgia Tech has wide receivers?

I'm sorry, I couldn't help it.

Our 3rd receiver only has 2 TDs... I think the more telling stat is that he was 2nd on the team in receptions with 12.

Tech has 3 WR's?

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Our other WR is a little tighter and taller than he is wide.

"The more telling stat is that he was 2nd on the team in receptions with 12". One reception a game by a wr. Yes, at gt you Can Do That !

They also have more players that have caught TD passes than us (7 to 6). Kind of helps put some perspective on our offense right now...

No it doesn't.

Sounds like our 1997 receiver statistics.

I don't think they call them Wide Receivers, but prefer the term Wide Crack Backers.

I'm not sure why any wide receiver would ever want to play for a school that will make him cut block 90% of the time.

I have always been baffled on why high school WR's choose to go there. Like what the hell could PJ tell them to make them want to play football in that triple option offense.

"Come to GT, we might throw to you, but only on 3rd down AND if it is greater than 10 yards!" -PJ

Demaryius Thomas had almost 1200 yards his last season under PJ.

Virginia Tech has never had a 1000 yard receiver.

Just sayin. If you're a physical freak and want to prove to NFL offenses that you are a threat down the field, I'd argue that no offense is going to highlight that skill more than Georgia Tech.

I have maintained the argument for years that go routes in Paul Johnson's playbook may as well be trick plays.

Because most of Thomas's yards came when he was wide freakin' open because 11 guys were trying to stop Josh Nesbitt, Jonathan Dwyer, and Anthony Allen from running wild over them.

AND... he was pretty much THE receiver on the team in '09. Outgained everyone else combined by being forgotten about.

EDIT: I will agree that Thomas was a physical freak, and that reason -- and that reason alone -- is why no subsequent receiver at the school has been able to replicate what he did.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

I was going to say...it's not like Thomas has been exposed in the NFL. It was a combination of both, the nature of the GT offense and what defenses prepared to stop along with his physical ability.

I think that's exactly the point being made.

There are certainly instances when a Georgia Tech receiver will be forgotten about, but the majority of Thomas's receiving yards were due to single coverage, not simply being allowed to run straight down the field unmarked. PJ's ability to isolate corners on physical freaks is undeniable. Thomas had a few huge years, Deandre Smelter had over 700 yards last year and Stephen Hill had over 800 yards three seasons ago.

If you are an elite wide receiver, Georgia Tech probably isn't the best place to go. That being said, I think it's worth noting that Paul Johnson has had more wide receivers making waves in the NFL than David Cutcliffe and his spread offenses. PJ knows how to get more out of an athlete than almost any other coach in the country... his issue has always been getting athletes into his program.

Exactly one Paul Johnson WR has made waves in the league, and that's Thomas.

Hill wasn't anything special before injuries started getting him. Smelter and Waller have gotten injured this year, so to say they're average in the league would be unfair. Jury's out on them.

Now, as far as Cutcliffe WRs, Jamison Crowder has already had a more productive rookie season than Thomas did. Will he end up keeping that trajectory? Depends on who's throwing to him for the rest of his career.

You also learn to block. Clemson's receivers and Bama's are also required to block. I think coaches at the next level notice that.

Thomas is a rare talent that doesn't happen often. And he wasn't even Paul Johnson's recruit., so he committed to an offense/team before the triple offense was implemented.

And I don't think any physical freak WR would go to a triple option based team to showcase his talents, thats laughable

I agree, that's not what I said.

What I said was that if a receiver wanted to showcase his ability to get open down the field, no offense will highlight that more than Paul Johnson's if only because that's almost exclusively how he uses his wide receivers. No, elite wide receiver prospects shouldn't go to a triple option team.

But let's be accurate. There are definitely selling points for Paul Johnson to give to high school WR's, particularly those who have the big bodies to block well and battle for balls down the field.

This is what he tells WRs

"Just take wide receivers for instance. We probably got more wide receivers in the NFL than any other team in the ACC, if you really look." Johnson pointed out, noting names like Stephen Hill, Demaryius Thomas, and Calvin Johnson (even though he left a year before Johnson's arrival, it's a name he still uses in recruiting).

"I think what the offense does is it gives you a chance for a lot of one on one coverage, and allows you to create a lot of big plays. You know, would you rather have 35 or 40 catches for 1,000 yards or 90 catches for 600 yards?"

Two active (Megatron, Bey-Bey), two on IR (Smelter, Waller), one a free agent (Hill).

Since it's late at night, I'm gonna have some fun. Looking to see how many ACC WRs are currently in the league and on rosters...

BC - 0
Clemson - 4 (Jaron Brown, Martavis Bryant, DeAndre Hopkins, Sammy Watkins)
Duke - 1 (Jamison Crowder)
FSU - 3 active (Kelvin Benjamin, Rashad Greene, Anquan Boldin), 1 practice squad (Rodney Smith)
Louisville - 1 (DeVante Parker) (Harry Douglas never played in the ACC)
Miami - 4 active (Allen Hurns, Leonard Hankerson, Phillip Dorsett, Devin Hester), 1 practice squad (LaRon Byrd) (Andre Johnson never played in the ACC)
UNC - 1 (Brandon Tate)
NC St - 1 (T.J. Graham)
Pitt - 1 (Devin Street) (Larry Fitzgerald never played in the ACC)
Cuse - 0
UVA - LOL
Tech - 2 (Eddie Royal, Corey Fuller)
Wake - 2 (Chris Givens, Michael Campanaro)

Also, I find CPJ's mention of Calvin Johnson to be highly disingenuous considering (1) he never coached him and (2) that little bit about 40 rec for 1000 yards didn't apply to any GT offense Megatron played for.

seeing "GT WR" brings back bad memories of how dirty they played in 2009 both WR's and their line.

Just said he didn't want to play my crappy, 1930's version of football from before anyone had invented a forward pass anymore,

Fixed that for ya, PJ

Quitting as a redshirt junior this late into the season, c'mon man.

Petebuddywilson gave him a whole paper bag full of expired Hardee's coupons to bail right before our game. No one can resist the possibility of cheap Hardee's (if the cashier doesn't look too closely)
