OT--> 4* WR picked TCU.. flips to Houston

Flipped from TCU to Houston

Dude is legit 4* #43 ranked WR for 15 class, Nationally ranked #191

Goes to HS at Bellaire High School which is approximately 20 minutes from Houston campus.

Here is his Hudl -> Boss

Quick article on his flip here-> Flipped to UH

Main Point Herman is wheeling and dealing for the top prospects in Texas and seems to have stolen on from the big boys for now.

EDIT-> looks like early assumption are he might not have the grades to get in and could go JUCO route regardless as to where he signs.

Flight tracker shows him and Drew Harris arriving on the same plane.

Todd Nolen will make a great WR #2 with him.

Herman remains my #1 choice.

I'm starting to get the feeling that with all the hype surrounding Herman (he seems to be pretty well favored on this board at least) we probably won't get him :(

Damn you and your naysaying!!!

If you play it, they will win.

it's a mechanism I employ to try keeping myself from getting my hopes up. Every day that passes I start hoping more and more for Herman to take the job. If I let that continue I'll be devastated by early December if he's not VT's next Head Hokie. I have to temper my expectations early on to prevent that...

Lol. I get it. Sadly, as a Hokie fan you have to temper expectations or you risk having a coronary. That was more of a lighthearted damning because I've come to expect the worst as well.

If you play it, they will win.

Herman's recruiting is the main reason I have him at the top of my personal list. He has Houston (Houston!!) ranked as the 31st overall recruiting class this season, including a commitment from a 5-star DT. He was also responsible for bringing a bunch of top 100 talent from Texas to Ohio State (JT Barrett included).

Exactly. And he learned at the feet of Urban Meyer how to run a program.

Whether we get him or not, Herman will be a big time winner in the future of college football.

I think you're probably right...that's why I want him at VT so badly. Only time will tell. Who knows, maybe we won't get him and 10 years from now we'll be thankful that he didn't end up here because he turned out to be more like Mike London than Urban Meyer (hahahaha...I doubt it)

Yeah it's always a gamble with a young coach, no matter how promising. If I'm forced to put money on the table, I'm saying he's very successful. However, you never know, could be/become a slimy recruiter or falter under bigger pressure and expectations. Only time can tell those things.

that's why they call it gambling, I guess. I hope Whit doesn't mind taking a risk on someone like him. I think cds7c has made a pretty good case for hiring Richt. He would be a smart choice from Whit's perspective but he's just not as exciting of a hire to me.

My big concerns with Richt are:
1)why is he coming to VT when he's got a pretty good gig at UGA? What's his end game? What's going to drive him to excel?

and 2)will he be able to recruit top 20 classes at VT the way he could at UGA? I think VT is much more difficult to recruit for than UGA. I wonder how much of Richt's recruiting success has to do with where he's coaching versus how good of an actual recruiter he is.

For someone like Herman, I don't have those concerns. He's a young up-and-comer. He would have to view VT as one of two things. 1) A solid foundation to build a blue blood program and make a real name for himself in the process, even winning a championship or two. Or 2) a stepping stone to bigger and better things. I think in either case he would be motivated to succeed at the highest of levels. He can't get to the level he's aspiring for if he puts it in cruise control. I doubt very much he'd be that type anyway.

Herman is also one heck of a recruiter. He recruited well at OSU and you can ask the same question I did. How much of that is him and how much of that is OSU? A year ago I would have said it was more OSU than him. But he's recruited really well at Houston (HOUSTON!!!) so I think he's proven his worth there. I also tend to think that being younger is an advantage in recruiting. A guy like Herman isn't as far removed from his 18-20 years as an older guy like Richt. Perhaps I'm being unfair to Richt in this case but my guy says Herman would be the better recruiter of the two.

he's recruited really well at Houston (HOUSTON!!!)

This alone is my only concern about Herman. No one can deny that the guy can recruit but nearly everyone is shocked by how well he's doing at a lower tier program. He got the 5 star recruit before he even coached his first game at Houston. I hope that he is just that good of a recruiter and not doing anything sketchy to get these guys.

The last thing I want is for our new coach to illegally recruit. A top ten recruiting class is not worth sanctions on the program for 3 - 5 years. VT would have a much harder time coming back from that than the USC's and Miami's are able to.

If he is fact that great of a recruiter and doing everything the right way, then sign me up for the Herman bandwagon. But this much recruiting success, so quickly at a program like Houston has me thinking:

There is a ton of talent really close to the school, look at this 4* (20 miles away). Having friends and family be able to come watch you play is always a powerful draw.

Then why hasn't Houston had this much recruiting success before?

The same argument could be made for any lower tier program in Texas and Florida. Chad Morris is considered a great recruiter but SMU hasn't done anything close to what Houston has accomplished in recruiting.

Baylor, with all of their recent success, has never landed a 5* recruit. Neither has Texas Tech. No one would have ever said that Houston would land a 5* before either of those two programs.

I'm not saying that Herman is in fact a shady recruiter. But going off past trends, this big of a leap in recruiting success for a program like Houston has to raise some eyebrows.

If he is this successful in recruiting by doing everything by the book, then kudos to him and I'd love to see what he can do at VT.

SMU's recruiting class is 2nd I'm the AAC behind Houston while Memphis is somewhere around #7. Not sure why there is the need to insinuate that Herman is doing something shady. He is a good recruiter with an exciting offense and playing time to sell. He is my #1 candidate, not that means anything.

But if he were looking at VT as a stepping stone there are only really a handful of other programs that would be considered bigger. Alabama, OSU, Michigan, ND, maybe a couple others but not many. I don't know any elite programs that should be looking for a head coach soon that he would leave VT to take.
