With the CFP committee weighing conference championships so heavily, if Notre Dame gets left out over a team that wins their conference do you think they fully join the ACC?
Who would the ACC look to add to fill the spot on the Coastal division?
Most importantly what's the impact on ACC football?

If they make the playoff this year: never. They keep all the revenue from it. No reason to revenue share at all for them.

Notre Dame isn't going to negotiate away their football TV rights very easily unless they start getting frozen out of exclusive network contracts and exclusive revenues from bowl games.
And it's sort of hard to blame them. They know they've got a sweet gig.
In other words...
First of all, Notre Dame is going to do whatever they can to preserve the game against Navy.
If ND joins the ACC fully, then we're probably going to 9 conference games.
ND has three annual rivals - USC, Stanford, and Navy. If none of those are in-conference, then ND's schedule would be set every year. But that also means that ND would never be able to schedule any other game. So, I think Notre Dame tries to get Navy into the ACC with them.
Notre Dame really cares that much about their games with Navy?
Shoot if they want that Wing T offense on their schedule, there is a team in Georgia that chops more then a salad shooter.
Would have liked to see a slap-chop reference here, but I'll allow it
Yeah, it's actually a pretty touching story. In WW2, ND didn't have enough students to stay open and was contemplating shutting down the college. Navy sent midshipmen to train at ND to keep their doors open. Here is the wiki on it:
Yes they do.
From Wikipedia:
And I know I saw a quote from Brian Kelly about that in recent years stating the same.
DRINK! Those replies that take a while to type will get after ya.
Alas, this time, it wasn't the typing, it was the research. I was trying to find that Brian Kelly quote, but gave up.
People have said that if the ACC can get Navy then Notre Dame will come along too.
Sooo the coastal gets ND and the Atlantic gets Navy?
Ideally, they'll do conference realignment. I think for it to work, ND and Navy would have to be in the same division since ND also plays BC every year
Notre Dame doesn't play any single ACC team every year. Even the mostly yearly rivalries like BC and Pitt dropped down to how ever often they fall into the rotation.
Still, I think realignment is going to be necessary with 16 teams and 9 games.
If ND beats Stanford and doesn't get in, they'll join within 5 years.
If ND gets in the playoff, they'll never join. Ever.
Not until
CBSNBC locks them out (which they won't) or the playoff format dictates that ONLY conference champions can play in the playoff (which they won't). After that, the only chance is that they are the only independent team out there, other conferences are playing 9 or even 10 game conference schedules, and ND loses more of their rivals. All that is to say that it's either never going to happen or won't happen for quite a while until some drastic changes occur.Probably a very long time, but if they are left out of the playoff this year, they may start to reconsider. If that happens and the ACC can bring in Navy, I think they may seriously have to think about it. They've already discontinued their rivalries with Michigan and MSU, Stanford isn't really a top rivalry game for them, and pretty much the rest of their big rivals sans USC would be in the ACC (BC, Pitt, Navy, plus other classic series with Miami and FSU). Might look pretty attractive to them, and could still schedule USC every year.
The grand prize would be this happening and using ND's partnership with NBC to broker a new TV deal/network with NBC. Would be a huge coup for the conference.
Stanford is big for them because it gets them a game on the west coast every year. They have stated before that that is very important to them.
And USC doesn't get them west coast exposure every year?
On TV, yes. But they only play out west every other year. They play at Stanford in years when they play USCw at home. The west coast trip is really helpful for recruiting.
Holy Crap! Can you imagine if NBC put the amount of production quality into college football games that they put into Sunday Night Football? I don't know if they have the resources, but that would be fantastic.
As for the USCw rivalry, ND could play the Trojans during the last week of the season like UF-FSU, GT-UGA, and Clemson-USCe.
Having said that, ND will never join a conference unless they absolutely have to. It is hard to imagine them giving up that autonomy and revenue. But if they ever do, the ACC is in prime position to bring them fully onboard.
The day before never.
I'm generally pretty cynical about the intentions of college athletes and athletic programs, but when Swarbrick (sp?) said two years ago that they would drop down to non-scholarship football if they ever had to pay players, I believed him. I think they have an understanding of what they are about that is different than everyone else. In a lot of ways, bigtime college football needs ND more than ND needs it. I expect the avenue to get into the playoff will always be gerrymandered to benefit ND. If it isn't, or if players need to start drawing wages commensurate with their time investment, I can see ND walking away.
Notre Dame has a sweet deal. Racking in money with a massive tv deal and typically a top 5 team if they only have one loss.
So how long should we wait for them to join..

+1 for the Sandlot reference. Love that movie.
UVA will win a national championship in every sport in the same year before ND joins the ACC as a full fledged member.
The only way ND joins is if they beat Stanford and are still snubbed. In a year when the PAC 12, and potentially big 12 are both going to be eliminated from the playoffs, if they can't make it in they never will. Then ND will have to seriously think about joining the ACC to have that crucial 13th game.
Then the ACC would just have to poach Navy from the BigLeast(AAC) to take it to 16. Or kick out Louisville.
Well, for one thing, I don't see the ACC kicking any teams out. Ever. If they did, why Louisville?
Also, how would our conference schedule be structured by adding two more teams? The conference schedule is terrible as it is right now because there are too many teams in the league. The belly-aching and whining about our awful schedule structure is only going to intensify by adding more teams to an already over loaded conference.
If the ACC was going to start kicking teams out, I vote that we get back to 12 teams and ignore ND altogether. I don't really see what value ND adds to the conference anyway.
Louisville because the ACC threw it's academic requirement out the window to let them in just for their sports prowess at the time I loved being able to tell WVU fans we'd never let them in because of their academics, but after Louisville, I can't claim that any more.
you know who's academics are more laughable than Louisville's?
UNC's
yes, except Louisville's non-student-athletes only get a marginally better education than UNC's student-athletes. The rest of UNC gets a pretty good education and training in condescension to boot. They're like the LOLUVa of NC.
(waits for the "hey, I went to Louisville" reply)
I name Louisville because they were the most recent to join as well as their crappy academics. But I agree we almost have too many teams now. We really need to be on a nine game conference schedule. But FSU, Clemson, and GT have tried their best to shoot that down every time it comes up.
As for trimming down to 12 teams again, I can guarantee that most of the ACC would probably vote out VT as they didn't want us to start with.
If they booted us, we'd last about 12 seconds in independent status before the SEC made us an offer we couldn't refuse.
Not denying that at all.
I'd be okay with this and the upper deck to the east stands that would come with this invitation.
But... but does that mean I'd have to change the first line in my signature?
Because fuck louisville, that's why.
Yes, I'm still bitter over the implosion of the old metro conference, and louisville's role in stabbing us in the back. So fuck them, I don't care if makes sense or not as long as somehow louisville gets screwed.
I'm kidding, of course, I realize no one's getting kicked out. But if it had to happen, my vote would definitely be for loserville.
Couple seasons where having no conference championship game to play in keeps them out of playoffs and they will join......n.d. Could win alot of conference championships in ACC...but right now they don't need it....the media and selection committee has some kind of love affair with them and they are over rated imo.......in the end money is the x factor.....when it becomes financial burden to stay in dependent ...they join.... We gave contract w them till 2027 I believe
ND could join and keep their schedule if they wanted to, but the TV deal is too sweet to give up. They could play Navy every year similar to UGa/GT and SCar/Clem and work in USCal home/away every other year if they wanted some more variety in their sched.
my guess is never
i'd say when our ECU series runs out.. whens that 2000&NEVERRRRRRRRRRR
Looking at the future schedule soon we will be tired of ecu and odu...
At least ODU is another VA school that lets kids play their old HS mates every time.
So you're saying there's a chance, as long as it's 85 years from now.
Never, they make too much money off their dusty rangs...
I heard on College Sports Nation the other day that if the playoff stays at four teams, ND will likely be forced to join, especially if they are left out one year. If they move to eight teams, which I think is inevitable, they will never join fully.
I don't know if they get left out this year. If they beat Stanford I think that will eliminate a Pac 12 Champ from contention. With a B1G team and at least one SEC team in the mix it would be hard to keep ND out. If Clemson Wins the ACC they'll get a spot. If UNC wins the ACC I think ND would get the nod over them. Winner of the OU/OSU match-up will have the best shot at a spot out of the Big XII. That's where the toss up will occur. But who does the committee punish? ND for not playing in a conference championship game or the Big XII champ for not playing in a conference championship game?
In my ideal world Stanford will beat ND and win the PAC 12. Clemson wins out and the playoff committee is forced to take conference championship game winners from the ACC, B1G, Pac 12, and SEC. Because I hate ND. And I think it'll be funny if the Big12 gets crapped on two years in a row because they don't have a conference championship game. That will force them to make a change there.
The B1G is the wildcard. Iowa hasn't gotten much love, MSU should have another loss (to Missagain...fluke play at the end), anOSU is/was a paper tiger. So if Iowa runs the table, they are in. If either of the other 3 win out, including Iowa, they probably are in.
Then maybe they look at the Big12 and put an Oklahoma in there over an ND that barely squeaked by BC. (And still has a good shot to lose at Stanford.)
Then you've got the $EC. What if Florida beats Bammer, but only by a point or so at the last second? Do they put both of them in???
Remember that TCU was in going into the last week last year...
I think the Texas loss, compared with ND, is killing the Sooners right now.
True, but with that ugly single loss being to their arch rival, they still have one of the hottest teams around. I think no question they're in if they beat little brother in Bedlam.
1.) The LSU/Alabama rematch in 2011 was a big catalyst for the CFP. I doubt the committee would be interested in having a potential rematch of a conference championship game in either round of the playoffs.
2.) We could just have Auburn beat Alabama, and Ole Miss win out. That would just leave the SEC out of the CFP altogether.
The moment ND makes the playoffs over any conferences is the moment those conferences cease to be impartial about independents.
I still don't see it happening this year. Worst I see is a one loss BIGX?? team making it and thereby prolonging their expansion and addition of a CCG. Or their outright disbanding.
