Lane Stadium and the Blacksburg Seismograph

Yep, the crowd registered on the seismograph again on Saturday.

IDK if this was brought up, but I figured I would mention it. It's cool how often this seems to happen. I'm not a seismologist so I don't know how hard this is to do, but I enjoy seeing it.

There's also a bump for what I can only assume is the Metallica video too.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

I think that may have been when the fans first saw Beamer in the tunnel and the start of Enter Sandman. The pause has to be when we realized Metallica did a tribute video for Frank. Then the big jump when Enter Sandman really started. Or, that's my theory...

Right, everyone thought Enter Sandman was starting, but it was just the video.

Then it got real.

I think I see a couple first downs there

seriously, though, it's sad when our fans celebrate first downs the way we do. That really speaks to the ineptitude we've grown accustomed to offensively over the last decade :(

Agree so much. My biggest hope for our future offense is that we move the ball regularly enough to not do the whole three phase cheer after a first down. Maybe just cut it down the the last phase

I'll continue to celebrate first downs until the day I die. Every chance to cheer and yell H-O-K-I-E-S HOKIES!

I don't have a problem celebrating first downs. I like doing it. It's just sad that we jump up and down and high five everyone in our section as if we just scored every time we get one. That's what happens in my section, at least. I want to get first downs so often that we get tired of the cheer. I want to get first downs so often that we don't have time to finish the cheer before the next first down.

As it is right now, we're getting (seemingly) 3 first downs a quarter. That sucks.

Onward and upward

Ah... your section does a lot more than mine does (other than big first downs a couple of times a game).

I'm in West with a bunch of slightly cynical older alumni. The celebrations almost feel a bit sarcastic at times.

Onward and upward

Understandable. I grew up between Philly and NYC so the "fans that love to hate" are a familiarity to me. I like to stay up in Touchdown Terrace mostly because it's so relaxed. :)

The game tying touchdown is what Lane used to sound like during most home games.

Really wished Hokie Vision had played Enter Sandman at least one more time, the 3rd down for UNC in OT.

I don't like Sandman for any play that isn't (potentially) game-deciding. If they fail on 3rd down, they kick a chip shot FG to tie. Then do we play Sandman again in 2OT? It gets overused at that point. Sandman should be for the opening and maybe the critical/deciding 4th down late in the game. If we had pushed UNC back during the first couple plays and they had 4th down out of FG range, that's Sandman time.

Being at the game, it felt right for the moment. Normally I'd agree with you though.

Exactly, to me it was the moment it just felt like it would have worked there.

It felt like the right moment for gt last year. That was a kick in the nuts after we didn't get it

4th and 15 for GT at the 50. Enter Sandman, crowd going wild. I would have bet a kidney that VT would stop GT from converting that.

Once we gave up 18 yards on 1st down, I really didn't think there would be a big momentum moment for us at any point in that OT. Had we come up with a stop, loss of yards, or a bad snap that moved them back, I would be more inclined to agree.

I am a seismologist (geophysicist) and I love how we can record football games.

Was that "Thank you...Beamer" just before Enter Sandman or was that the cannon boom?

I saw it stated by someone on Twitter (with a slightly different annotated version of the seismograph) that it was "crowd catches sight of Beamer," which I assume is the moment they put him and the team on the big screen as they left the practice facility. The place went nuts.

Perfect. Thanks!
