My thoughts:
At 326 lbs tackle Nick Becton and guard Brent Benedict and are the heaviest players on the team.
Lanier put on 24 pounds. He's over three-bills now and I'm encouraged by this. He's had trouble putting on and maintaining weight. Hopefully it's the healthy stuff.
Why are players shrinking a couple of inches?
Collin Carroll (-16), Randall Dunn (-15), J.R. Collins (-13), Theron Norman (-13) and Bruce Taylor (-9) lost the most weight this summer. The coaches were going to try to play Collins at both tackle and end, but at 240 lbs there's no chance of that happening.
The average weight of the starting o-line (considering BDC and Nosal) is 302.2 lbs.
The brothers Hopkins and Kwamaine Battle are all over 300 lbs.
By class there are 66 freshman, 20 sophomores, 22 juniors and 17 seniors.
And finally, BeamerBall.com announced/reported (I guess a coach can report his own news) that redshirt freshman Jerome Lewis is transferring and Michael Holmes is awaiting final approval from the NCAA Clearinghouse.
Comments
Drager Bomb at 264 has bulked up nicely for the TE position.
Logan Thomas
now up to 254. That's a big man under center.
Great chart!
A few thoughts... I like that Zack McCray is putting on some weight. That seemed to be a concern last year at this time. The size of the offensive line is impressive. Becton, Lanier and Nosal should look a lot bigger this year, which hopefully helps durability. Also, J.R. Collins should be able to get to the QB quicker after cutting 13 pounds!!
I'm stoked about Lanier, but Becton at 326... that's a big boy right there. I have no clue whether or not it's good or bad weight, but it just seems like an awful big jump. Then again practice starts today so we can wait and see.
True
I am assuming it is good weight. From everything I have read and heard, most of the players hung around this summer in the weight room. If Becton did, it should be good weight.
Beating a Dead Horse here but...
Look at the average height of our guards and tackles. Its like 6'3''-4'' With some as tall as 6'7''. With LT being all of 6'6'' There is definite advanatge in the pocket to get a glimpse of coverage from the snap.
I agree
I thought almost the exact same thing. It went through my mind "man, Tyrod would have some big boys to look over. Thank God Logan is a monster!"
A third
About a third of the freshman got shorter!
O line has a lot of height and weight. I hope that translates to success.
High school numbers are nearly always inflated to intimidate the other team and to encourage recruiters that take a look at the roster. This explains all the "shrinking" freshmen. I'm sure McCray's height difference is just human error, which is easy to do when the numbers are rounded like this... the difference between 6'4.4" and 6'4.5" is very small.
lol - Agree with that
I played HS football and was listed as 6' 190# when I was actually 5'10" 175 at best.
the cool thing about LT3
At 254 lbs, a conservative estimate of 12% bodyfat would put him at a lean mass of 224 lbs. Studies of Div-1 offensive lineman have shown that they average 25% bodyfat...slap that much fat onto Logan and you have a 6'6" 298 lineman. Basically he is what you would have if an OL got lipo. The kid is a beast.
+1
That's the best analysis / analogy I've heard.
Wow..
That is an amazing way to put it! Thanks for getting me hype!
Though it took quite some time VT is now starting to get most of the O-line hanging around 300 lbs and getting 6'4" or better for most. Most O-lines I have seen from Blacksburg have been good enough to dominate D-lines in the ACC but not the Big Ten, Pac 10, Big XII or SEC. Now these guys should be able to buy LT3 some serious time and as many have pointed out since O'Cain won't have to roll the pocket as much as they did last few years with T-Mobile under center deep routes should develop nicely.
Sorry I obsess about the O-line for a few reasons- I was a center in HS and the LSU 2007 game. Since the latter I have understood that at many points our recruiting in that area needed to be dramatically improved size-wise. After seeing our o-line get eaten alive more than once (including the OB last year) its nice to see some drastic size changes in personnel. At this point, try to grow the average just a bit more and get 'em quick with their feet...oh man it could be a great year!
O-Line Depth
The best part about recruiting for the offensive line is that we no longer need to convert TEs and DLs to OLs. Despite the fact that we've had excellent success converting TEs/DLs to OLs (Duane Brown, Ed Wang, and Brandon Frye...all in the NFL), Nosal and Lanier are the last two TE conversions on the current OL roster. Nick Becton and Courtney Prince are last two converted DLs.
Additionally, in the past there would have been more than a little concern about injuries to starting OLs because of a lack of depth at almost every OL position. Instead, we're comfortable with the idea that David Wang, who performed very well during Spring Practice, will start in place of Nosal, and that Via, with Painter also getting reps, will step in for Dechristopher. This allows Wang, Via, and Painter to gain valuable game experience early this season.
