Tough situation at Georgia - they let a guy go who won games and got them to the Championship. Whoever comes in will have the same standards in a very short amount of time.
Flip side of that argument: whoever takes over for Richt will likely be paid in the $4M range, will inherit a program stocked with talent, including an incoming top-5 recruiting class, at a university in the top 20 in terms of revenue, with great facilities, and a very passionate fan base. There are worse problems to have...
Very very true. The job definitely is attractive - and comes with tons of momentum and flair, just a lot of pressure associated with it.

Agreed, makes sense for him. UGA could open up to him, but I expect they will look at Smart, Patterson, and Freeze if they can't interest Jimbo or Dabo.
doubt Freeze is interested in any job openings. He is Ole Miss through and through. Have you read that anywhere?

Last 3 hires for USC: Kiffin, Sark, Helton. If you expected anything less than this, you should be surprised, but this is the norm for them now.

I think it's a good hire for USC. I believe he earned this opportunity. While USC could attract a popular guy, Helton proved that he's fit for the job by going 4-1 and playing USC back into the Pac-12 Championship game. That and he did it with players that he recruited with the coaching staff. It'll be interesting to see how he assembles his staff and how many coaches he will keep on staff.

*5-2 this season, 6-2 overall. He coached the 2013 Las Vegas bowl.

They really fucked up on that. Orgeron could have been a really good permanent hire for them
I actually disagree. I can think of a lot of coaches who had great runs after replacing a fired head coach (and inheriting a roster like USC's it wouldn't be too hard), but ultimately showed no capability of building a team and being the guy long term after the initial honeymoon period was over.
Ed Orgeron took over an Ole Miss program and did extremely poorly, going 10-25 over 3 years. He had and has not proven any ability to build and maintain a program as the head coach, and frankly I think USC made the right call looking elsewhere. The not so great call was getting Sark, who turned out to have issues with alcoholism.
Orgeron also said that he learned a lot during his time at Ole Miss, and during his short tenure at USCw, he enacted a lot of the changes to his approach that he had problems with at Ole Miss.
I think USCw made a mistake when they didn't extend Orgeron, and not they're trying to make up for it by extending this interim coach. I think they'll be chasing their dreams as long as Haden is the AD there.
Yeah but a lot of coaches say that (I mean what is he supposed to say if he's trying to audition for the job or any job, that he learned nothing from his struggles at Ole Miss?). And frankly I still don't buy his results that year really indicated much of anything in terms of his approach, besides being a guy players liked and could rally around for a late season push. The former of which was already known, and that factor didn't help guys like Mike London achieve long term success as a HC (as an example). USC is one of the premier destination spots in college football, they could have definitely done better than Orgeron. Nothing against the guy, but still I don't think Orgeron was the right move for them.
I do agree about Helton's removal of his interim status as making up for that Orgeron decision though (removing my opinions about it).
I know Sark is a PR nightmare right now and needs to get his life straight but man if UVA had some sense they would be going after him at a huge discount. Let him lay low build up the program and clean up his rep.
I'm sure UVA doesn't want to take that on but could be a great huge Win if they get the good Sark and not the UBER Drinker version.
(All in hopes this doesn't happen at all and definitely not relevant to this post but it popped into my head)

Don't know if I'd call the UVA job "laying low". Unless you're referring to the Coastal division standings.
There's a very real chance that by the end of this coaching cycle, we're going to come away as the clear cut winners. USCw was the one job that could have hit a massive home run and they went with the promotion from within. Completely unexpected. Now, its Miami, USCe, Georgia, and Mizzou as the best jobs available, and with Herman reportedly staying to land a blue blood job down the line, I'm not sure any of those are really capable of swinging a better deal than what we just got.
Miami is paying (presumably) big money for a searching firm to help make their hire. It really doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

I find it embarrassing when athletic departments do this. basically you're waiving a white flag and saying you either suck at your job or hoping that if the hire fails you can pass the blame to the search firm.
USC fans don't seem all that pleased.
It is LA, they want big names in the big light. Promoting from within because the players are supportive and want to play for that kind of coach means nothing to them.

The fans will come around when/if he wins. Nothing else really matters.

Stripped of GM position. Given one more year since he had two 10 win seasons before this one, then given the boot after next year. I predict an blue blood school will be calling his name after next year.....like Auburn (just a guess probably not)

Honestly good for them if they think it's the right person for the job. USC is a big enough name that they don't need to make a splash to be recognized in the CFB world. As stated above, his performance on the field will ultimately matter much more than the name.

I don't think the alums realize it yet, but this was probably a solid hire. They went with the guy who they trust to win them games, not the popular coach of the week. This is uncharted territory for USC.
