The Hokies nab another New Jersey prospect and offensive linemen. Coach Grimes is on a roll. Billy Ray Mitchell announced his commitment to Virginia Tech.

HokieHaven.com, spoke with the 6-4 285-pound offensive lineman this afternoon.

Mitchell, who cancelled an unofficial visit to Wisconsin he had planned for the weekend, called the Virginia Tech staff this afternoon to commit, becoming commitment No. 13 for the 2014 class.

"A lot of people know that I liked Ole Miss a lot," Mitchell said. "I've liked Virginia Tech ever since I was a kid. I mean, I feel like I'm ready to make the move. Being a Tech fan, I'm used to seeing them win a lot and go to bowl games a lot and consistently, which they've done and keep doing. I remember when Tyrod Taylor was there and they went to BCS bowls and were dominant in the ACC. They had a pretty decent year last year, but I wanna go, help recruit, get a good class and I wanna get back to that level. I wanna make Virginia Tech at the top of the list again."

Mitchell, Rivals.com's No. 23 player in New Jersey, said assistant coach Jeff Grimes has told him he'll move around a bit on the Hokies' offensive line.

"(Grimes) said tackle is probably not a spot, but he said center and guard, absolutely," Mitchell said. "To me, I don't care. I just wanna get on the field and make an impact as soon as possible."

Tech is pursuing other New Jersey prospects, like Ryan Izzo and Noah Brown, so perhaps Billy can get in their ears.

His highlights are below.

These are French's thoughts on his tape.

  • Terrific interior "pop explosion" or punch. His six inch pop from a slight elbow bend to full extension is elite. It knocks guys off their path.
  • Above average feet, he moves guys when he keeps his feet moving.
  • On some of those plays he was out of position and made up for it with the punch, not his feet.
  • His first step in pass protection needs to get quicker.
  • I could see him used as a goal line tight end initially.

Billy Ray shared thoughts on his own style of play with Todderick Hunt of NJ.com last May.

"Schools tell me they like my aggressiveness, how I finish blocks," he said. "Probably the biggest thing is my athleticism and my passion for the game. When I play football, I can't play any other way than with my passion and emotion. I don't let my emotions control my game but I definitely thrive off my emotions when I play."

Due to his versatility and overall athletic ability, schools are recruiting Mitchell at multiple positions along the offensive line.

"Some schools are recruiting me as a tackle, some are recruiting me inside. I'd say most see me playing inside at guard or center," he said. "I just want to play somewhere and be as good as I can possibly be wherever I go."

Welcome to HokieNation Billy Ray!

Joe tweeted this first, but it should go here:

edit: and he pulled a Tyrod:

He was relatively close on VPI...

At 6-4, 285, he probably is our biggest recruiter.

That's best offensive line showing I've ever seen in Rutgers' stadium.

Needless to say, this is a great get!

@historyhokie.bsky.social

Hot sweet goodness. I like this.

Grimes doing work....like a third shift work.Any time you grab a recruit that's beeing recruited by ole miss and WISCONSIN...the king of offensive lines...your doing something especially for a first year coach with no contacts or pipelines....

We run va!

OL recruits that also recruit

aww yeah

Ehh? Ehhh???
yes.

This kid can play. Has some things to work on, but they all do in high school. No worries there.
There's something also to consider that hasn't been mentioned yet: guys like this, they put the rest of their teammates on notice: you either bring it hard in practice or I will straight up pancake your arse in front of God and everyone. Junkyard dogs like this, they like to hit. That makes everyone compete a little harder. That kind of competition makes everyone--everyone--better, and it's enthusiastic. Welcome to the Hokienation, Billy Ray!

Makes me want to look for him in T-time!

man i know we have missed out on some recruits on the defensive side of things but i am so excited to see where we will be in a couple years. this kid does not stop at all. grimes is showing that he is really looking to make our line the best in the ACC. How ironic would it be to go from probably the worst OL play in the ACC to one of the best in a matter of a few years?

I believe you mean "How AWESOME would it be to go from..."
'Cuz the answer is: very awesome.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

A lineman named Billy Ray? Passes the sniff test

Sniff

dude. . . that gif. . . lol

"That kid you're talking to right there, I think he played his nuts off! And you can quote me on that shit!" -Bud Foster

Damn you hurting me right now. .. lol

Win one for the Beamer...

I just got home from the bar and my imagination has gotten the best of me.

Can't....stop...watching...

Pretty interesting that Billy Ray Mitchell was flirting with the idea of going to Wisconsin (not sure if he got an offer from them). Here's a list of OL from Wisconsin that went to the NFL in the past 10 years (round # in parentheses):

2013: Travis Frederick (1)
2012: Kevin Zeitier (1), Peter Konz (2)
2011: Gabe Carimi (1) John Moffitt (3), Bill Nagy (7)
2010: None
2009: Kraig Ubrik (3)
2008: None
2007: Joe Thomas (1)
2006: None
2005: Dan Buenning (4)
2004: None
2003: Al Johnson (2), Ben Johnson (7)

Not quite OLU but it's still pretty impressive. Good get for us.

This recruits really need to stop calling us University of Virginia Tech.

Forgot the most recent:
2013: Travis Frederick (1)

"Recruits really need to stop calling us University of Virginia Tech."

.... Darnit, Tyrod. Look what you started.

I had myself convinced that Tyrod was just saying that to mess with Florida for a split second. I honestly don't know if I can justify that opinion, but I prefer to think of it that way.

"Exit light..."

I keep telling myself that all of our recruits that do this do it to mess with UVA. "I'm committing to the University of Virginia..... Tech." ;)

Well played. A turkey leg for you, good sir. Whenever we can annoy UVa, I'm for it. Heck, even the announcer used to say that before games when the MVs were on the field. I don't think he does that any more.

"Exit light..."

I don't care if good recruits call us Vahh Tech as long as they keep coming to Blacksburg.

Hokies fan since 1998

Long as they keep tweeting that they're committing to the Hokienation, they can call us whatever they want. Except LOLUVA.

HOWEVA,
that late surge in their OLine drafts was largely attributed to Bob Bostad, who just took the same job with the Bucs. And first-rounder Gabe Carimi was cut by da bears, and he got picked up by Tampa so that he'd be reunited with his coach. I'm not saying he deserves all the credit for Wisky's road-grading OLines of late, but I think he's a decent chunk of it.

Mary had a little lamb, its fleece electrostatic. Everywhere that Mary went, the lights became erratic.

Billy Ray eh?... (closes eyes and has flashback: Sweet Flowing Mane)

FOSTERS: Australian for defense

Obviously the recruiters are not doing their job... They arn't even telling the recruits what the real name of the university is. On a serious note I'm super pumped that coach grimes is getting smart and aggressive guys that should turn around our most glaring weakness: O-line to maybe even a strength.

We should refer to Coach Grimes recruiting as "Getting our Grimey hands places" example: VT has it's Grimey hands all up in the North East right now. NJ, NY, PA, we don't care, we are all up in it.

I like a kid that pancakes someone and is right there to knock them over again when they stand up.

Anyone notice a lot of his highlight reel has Rutgers and meadowlands in it. Meaning these are big games, playoffs or states. Meaning he is beating great players. short version, his reel is made of him beating solid players. I like.

I'm also digging some of theses kids attitudes. We may not have a ton of recruits but to be hokies for life or I'm going to big the biggest recruiter is sweet. Nothing like a solid kid with love.

They have kids named Billy Ray in Jersey?? Who knew?!

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

Welcome to HokieTown, Billy Ray. May your mullet grow long and your treadmill be steady.

Any chance we can now get his cousin Bubba Ray?

"We were at the pinnacle, and we did it for years," Foster says. He pauses, nods, takes a deep breath. "And I did it with the best guy in the business."

Starting just before 6:30 you should probably cover the eyes of young children around you...what he does to #52 on multiple plays might traumatize them.
