Justin Fuente and Family Ready to "Win Some Games, Baby"

Justin Fuente introduces himself to Hokie Nation.

Whit Babcock had found his man, and he knew it. Not one to dilly-dally, Babcock told Justin Fuente the Virginia Tech job was his if he wanted it. And Justin Fuente wanted it.

But before Fuente could pull the trigger, he knew he needed his wife's stamp of approval.

"Let's win some games, baby," exclaimed Jenny Fuente.

And with that, Babcock found a coach — and a family — to build upon the foundation that Frank Beamer laid in Blacksburg over the past 29 years.

Fuente, who parts ways with Memphis after leading the Tigers to two of the most successful seasons in school history, was formally introduced as the Hokies' head coach this morning. With his wife and their three daughters sitting in the front row, Fuente made it known that Virginia Tech was his first and only choice.

"This is absolutely the job that I was interested in," said Fuente. "...I had no interest in anything else. Just this. Because of what it has been and what it can be and the community that comes along with it."

Fuente received a six-year contract that will pay him $500,000 in base salary annually, along with supplemental compensation that will increase from $2.7 million to $3.15 million during the span of the deal.

Prior to resurrecting a Memphis program that had just 51 scholarship players upon his arrival, Fuente spent five years at TCU under Gary Patterson and led the Horned Frogs' spread-based attack as offensive coordinator from 2009-2011. Widely considered one of the top offensive minds in college football, Fuente will bring a dynamic, up-tempo offense to Blacksburg. And even though Fuente's offenses consistently light up the scoreboard, the 39 year old coach said his goals on offense are actually far simpler.

"There's a lot of coaches out there that want to lead the country in total offense, no matter what. That's not what I believe in. I believe in trying to win the game," said Fuente. "...That being said, we want to change the tempo. That doesn't mean we want to go at such a speed that we hang the defensive side of the ball out to dry so to speak...But we do wanna control the tempo. We have been a run the ball first team. We have made big plays through play action pass, moving the pocket and getting the ball on the perimeter. That's what we'll continue to try to do."

Fuente's coaching staff remains a work in progress, but it was confirmed today that Bud Foster, Holman Wiggins, and James Shibest will be a part of the new regime. Foster needs no introduction, but Wiggins, the wide receivers coach at Memphis under Fuente, and Shibest, formerly the Tigers' special teams coordinator / tight ends coach, will be new faces roaming the sidelines of Lane Stadium.

Clearly understanding the premium placed on special teams in Blacksburg, Fuente singled out Shibest as a coach who will build on the success of Beamer's "Pride and Joy" units.

"I'm oftly proud of what we've done at the University of Memphis on special teams. And that's part of the reason James Shibest is standing in this room right now," said Fuente. "He's been our special teams coordinator. He's been a special teams coordinator in the Southeastern Conference for many years. I think you all will be excited to see him go to work."

Even though Foster didn't get the dream job he may have hoped for, the Hokies' longtime defensive coordinator seemed genuinely excited to team up with an offensive mind like Fuente, calling Babcock's hiring of Fuente an "excellent choice."

"Obviously we've been in an offense here that's been more of a pro-style, more ball control," said Foster. "...I'm gonna learn a lot from having to defend a spread type offense, an up-tempo offense (in practice). I think picking their brain offensively, what gives them problems. We can improve from some things. I think it's gonna be a great fit."

Fuente insinuated that as bowl season wraps up, additional Memphis assistants will make the transition to Blacksburg. But with both team's postseasons still in front of them, Fuente is weary of poaching too many of the Tigers' resources.

"Both teams, it's kind of a unique situation, both teams are playing in a bowl game. I want to make sure I pay due respect to the University of Memphis by making sure they have enough guys there to win their bowl game because I want them to go win," said Fuente. "But I also know I need to move forward at this aspect, too. There will be some guys that will stay there the entire time until they're done and then we'll bring them aboard."

For now, Fuente will jump right into recruiting as he hopes to finish out the Class of 2016 on a strong note. But when Fuente isn't on the recruiting trail, he'll be able to observe the Hokies' bowl practices and get acquainted with the team he'll inherit come January.

"I think it's an awesome benefit," said Fuente. "To be around, to see, watch the kids interact and get a chance, quite honestly, not be in charge of it but be able to sit back and just observe and watch. I think it's a huge advantage. I really do. I'm excited about it."

Much of Fuente's recruiting experience has come a long ways from Southwest Virginia, but the former Murray State quarterback isn't worried about developing relationships throughout the region.

"We will hire great people. People always win out," said Fuente. "It doesn't matter what part of the country you're in, when you hire great people, they'll do a great job and other people recognize that."

Fuente laid out the three underlying themes that he believes a program should be built on — mentoring young men, player development and recruiting. And while Fuente was certainly passionate about the first two, his voice perked up for the third and final pillar.

"We've gotta recruit," said Fuente. "We've gotta bring good young people to this community. That all starts in the state of Virginia. We have to do a great job in this state in order to continue this program along. And we will."

Despite head coaching vacancies sprinkled throughout college football, Fuente wanted to be nowhere else but Blacksburg. Sure, part of that was likely inheriting Bud Foster, one of football's finest defensive minds. But more importantly, Fuente takes over a program that's he come to deeply respect.

"I've admired this program from afar for many years," said Fuente. "On television, the way the players have played. The way the fans have cheered. The traditions. The wins. The losses. The facilities. The support. The league changes. And I've always wanted to be a part of something like that."

"The thing about this job is that it comes with all of those things, wrapped up in a community that I cannot wait to raise my three girls in," added Fuente.

This guy said all the right things: football success, building the players into functioning adults, building a sense of community, identifying and recruiting talent in the state of Virginia. This is going to be a great fit for the university.

One of my favorite parts was him talking about how Virginia Tech was the only job he pursued because he wanted to raise his daughters in a good community.

This guy is here for the long haul. He's got the chance to rebuild this program the right way, while maintaining focus on things that Beamer and Co always focused on: developing men first, players second and dominating the state of Virginia in recruiting.

I love this hire. I loved the press conference. This is gonna be a fun team.

These are my thoughts exactly and I wish I could give more than one leg.

It seems like right off the bat during the conference he seemed right at home. Everything he said made it seem like this is where he wanted to be and that it wasn't just the best option at the time. He's aware of the importance of recruiting, and personally I think the combination of him and Foster will make for a killer squad in time.

The more I read and think about it, the more I am very impressed and excited about this hire. He seems like a great guy who will fit into the VT community very well.

God I'm so excited.

I'm sure the rest of the ACC would have been very impressed by this, if they could hear it over the sound of them sh*tting themselves.

According to Bitter, that 2.7 number is Frank's current deal. Fuente will start at $3.15M and then increase to $3.65M over the course of the deal.

I looked up "oftley" and it used sometimes colloquially. I hope it's a word because I like to see our language evolve.

I'm all for language evolving, and I don't have any issue with oftly, but words like irregardless just irritate me. I don't consider a word like that to be evolution of the language.

Well then you should be happy...because it is NOT a word. And I agree....our language is not "evolving" but instead devolving as Americans grow more lazy and uneducated.

I draw the line when the logic behind a meaning is violated. So "irregardless", which is a word that logically should mean the opposite of regardless, but is used to mean the same thing is a violation. But "oftly" which is just having fun with a base word and using it in an unexpected way is fair play.

Maybe we should try to read it allowed

As well as 'apart', which is a word but I think it needs a space in this context

you are correct. 'apart' would mean separate from. 'a part' is, well, exactly what it looks like.

I noticed that Whit mentioned having discussions with Memphis AD Tom Bowen. Is this standard practice when hiring a coach away from another program or is this just another example of Whit doing business the right way? I love everything about how Whit has handled the last 5 weeks. It's been incredible. He's done a terrific job.

Onward and upward

I have read in the past (at college and pro levels of sports) that the AD/GM will contact the other coach's AD/GM and request permission to speak with the coach. In some cases I think this is required, at minimum it is simply professional etiquette.

"Exit light..."

Hopefully we are looking for his replacement in about 29 years.

Just so long as Whit is around to do it.

I'm all in and drinking the Fuente Kool Aid, but I love the selflessness of Bud Foster. You know he wanted that job and it probably sucked to not get it, but the fact that he's sticking around says a lot about him as a man. He loves Virginia Tech as much as Frank and he proved it by staying. I feel really good about our future today folks...definitely a Tech Triumph on all fronts to me.

What I liked best about the interview with Coach Fuente was this question asked by a reporter and his response:

REPORTER:
"That forcing the tempo and you mentioned the system you brought from TCU to Memphis, what are the roots of that? Where did you learn offensive football? Does it go back to your playing days in high school, at Murray? I'm just curious as to the roots of it."

JUSTIN FUENTE:
Well, when I took over at -- when I got the job at TCU, I was a running back coach, and I had been a 1-AA offensive coordinator at Illinois State at a pretty young age, and we had a couple good coaches on our staff, Coach Wiggins was one of them, that we kind of got together and we were a little more traditional I-pro team and we had some good players and had some success. I moved to TCU as a running back coach and really was enamored with the way that they ran the ball at TCU at the time. They got the ball to the perimeter; they ran some option stuff; they did some things formationally. I think that had a big influence on me, and then eventually I became the coordinator there. I've really, in short, taken bits and pieces of what we've done in the past and tried to build it together. I think the true mark of it is molding it towards your personnel. That's the most difficult job and the most important job in terms of offense or defensive football is what can our guys do well, what can we get them to do well, what are their skill sets, and trying to mold it to fit. It does you no good to say that you've got this certain offense but yet you don't have the guys with that skill set. You've got to mold it to what they've got, and that's a lot easier said than done, quite honestly. That's a big challenge. So we've taken bits and pieces over the years, different influences, talks with other people, and then tried to mold it to what we had.

Go Hokies!

yeah that QandA gave me a Hokieboner. I'm tired of trying to force kids into a system. I'm ready to build a system around the kids you have. I think that is a much better approach that can yield terrific results in less time. Like he said, though, it's not easy to accomplish. I think his track record proves that he can do it, though. He did it at TCU with Andy Dalton. He did it again at Memphis with Paxton Lynch. I have faith he'll be able to do it again at VT. Loeffler had a track record before he came to VT and despite cautious optimism in light of his obvious football IQ, the track record he had before arriving proved to be an accurate indicator of what we would get from him. The fact Fuente has the exact opposite track record to Loeffler makes me really excited.

Onward and upward

I'm curious, where have we ever seen our current coaches talk about recruiting to their "system" on offense? Seems like that's been a much bigger issue defensively. All the talk this year was about how Loeffler could use his TEs, and how he would move things around to create matchups for them. For the most part, that's what we've seen.

Keep in mind, a lot of the depth issues we had this year are still there, although with the redshirts and hopefully a couple skill guys that might come to provide talented depth, we're in a much better spot than we were at any point in the past 4 seasons. I'm cautiously optimistic we'll see immediate offensive results, but I hope we don't get too caught up in offensive rankings at TCU or Memphis and think Fuente will immediately turn ours into a top-10 unit.

I never saw all three TEs on the field together. Better yet, I never saw us go heavy with 3TEs and Rogers, which is easily the biggest mis-match 3rd-and-short formation. (Run with 4 extra blockers or flex out to 4 receivers and dare those big defenders to run with us.) As much as I remain on the "it ain't Lefty's fault" -the Oline has problems after repeated coaching swaps and recruiting misses -the RB rotation is a retard fucking a merry-go-round, etc; he did not attempt to use his players...his player, sure (Mr. Brewer, a tough S-o-B if ever there was one), but players...no.

“I remember Lee Corso's car didn't get out of the parking lot.” -cFB
TKPC #666 ...man that was long wait...

So you wanted us to go heavy? Why? We were at our best spreading the defense out and dictating where they could and could not commit numbers. His use of Malleck, Hodges, Ford, Philips, and Travon down the stretch shows me that he wasn't just a "system" guy, but used his players pretty effectively. Now, the rest of the offense outside of those players... not so great. Still, I'm excited that Fuente knows he has to adapt his offense to his players, I just don't see at all how that's different from what we've seen. This isn't GT or Oregon (anyone else remember Blount running sideways in 2009?) or anything like that.

My biggest objection to Loefler has never been play design, or system. He does both very well. He just seems to lack the sense of when to call what. French called Malleck being open over the middle as a schematically strong play before we beat UVA. I saw it open all day. Loefler called it once. The Roger's screen was never stopped, but went away. Not every play needs to be set up for three games before you use it, or should only be called once. Call it over thinking or a lack of touch, or whatever, but I am confident we are upgrading that position.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

I don't disagree with that at all, it just seems weird to me that so many seem to be questioning play design or system, as if that's the part that's the biggest upgrade here. Loeffler is very good at designing plays (especially the short to intermediate passing game) that played to the strengths of his best players. The only problem is, designing and calling/executing are different things. Still, I'll always be grateful to Loeffler for what he did with the O, if for no other reason than it's in a far superior position now to what it was when he took over. I see him in much the same way as I do Weaver at this point. Obvious shortcomings, but I think we'll see the next guy have success thanks to what he was able to do.

great analogy!

Onward and upward

I like this. He talked about recruiting kids that fit the schemes he wants to run, but clearly he's not going to recruit people and try to cram them into his scheme whether it works or not. It hits in my mind the perfect balance between a schizophrenic offense that can't figure it wants to be (what we've had in the past) and a place where they run their thing whether its getting the desired results or not (Georgia Tech and Auburn in certain years come to mind). I like this.

HOKIES

As much as i hate it thats actually pretty cool.

So can Fuente start talking to current VT recruiting targets/verbal commits? If so he should start doing some in home visits to ensure we don't lose any of the bigger recruits. I think that would go a long way in the eyes of those young players who might be unnerved by HCFB's retirement.

Once they get clearance from the NCAA, yes. Currently, we have too many coaches on the payroll, but that's a pretty typical situation for schools having a coaching transition. Should be no problemo, even by NCAA standards.

This (having too many coaches currently employed) is exactly what I've been wondering about and not seen addressed anywhere. How is it that the NCAA regulations allow us to add 3 new coaches to an already full allotment through the end of the bowl game? Isn't this technically against a regulation?

I'm surprised this hasn't been addressed somewhere.

Virginian by Birth, Hokie by Choice

Whit briefly talked about it in the press introduction. Sounded like a mere formality.

🦃 🦃 🦃

I posted it in another thread, per tweets from Andy Bitter. VT is applying for a waiver from the NCAA, which is standard in cases like this.

EDIT: a bit more information from one of Andy's articles: http://www.roanoke.com/sports/colleges/va_tech/fuente-adds-two-memphis-a...

Virginia Tech will ask the NCAA for a dispensation that allows the existing staff to prepare players for the bowl game without doing any recruiting and the new staff to recruit but not work with players at practice. Such arrangements aren't atypical with coaching changes like this.

So existing coaches coach, incoming coaches recruit. I suppose Bud can do both, since he's actually part of the new staff?

"Exit light..."

Good to hear. Thanks!

Virginian by Birth, Hokie by Choice

Nice. Well then lets send out our waivered bigger than allowed staff and canvas Virginia while the news is hot!!

I am really impressed with Whit. He seems to have found the perfect fit for VT. I mean there are so many things that lined up down to Frank coaching at his alma mater and sharing that with Bud. The sky is the limit at VT and all the rest of the schools better wake up and start paying attention because the Hokie Hype Train engine is beginning to get amped up. Very proud to be a Hokie today because we do things the right way.

Is it football season yet?

I don't know where to put this link, maybe it has already been posted, but everyone should absolutely read this:

I saw a post earlier today that referred to some of the things in this story: Bud being put on a plane to go meet the mystery coach and Whit not wanting to give Bud a token interview, but this whole article by Teel is a must-read for all of us.

Yeah, Bud talked about that a bit on TTL tonight. We love you, Bud!

That article may be my favorite of everything I have read regarding the coaching situation.

I'm excited to have Fuente. I'm excited to have Foster.

But to have Fuente want Foster, Foster want Fuente, and both want to win a lot of games at VT makes me super happy and excited and I can't wait to see what this program is like in two years from now.

Thank you for posting this. Very enlightening about how it all went down with Bud. God bless that man. You know it killed him not to get this post -- or even a real shot at it.

Virginian by Birth, Hokie by Choice

Wow, thanks for linking that. Two takeaways I hadn't heard yet (i'm certain it's buried in comments on TKP though) is:

Foster has asked him to consider retaining defensive line coach Charley Wiles and secondary coach Torrian Gray.

I know lots have spoken about the desire to keep Gray around, but didn't know that Bud explicitly asked to retain him. It also says that he understands it's of course Fuente's decision and he'll back whatever that ends up being.

"But I made it very clear if we feel strongly enough about you being the head coach, you can pick your guys. But then I did say, 'If it's not Bud you better have a darn good one you bring in here.'"

I respect Whit for verbalizing to Fuente that he can keep/hire whichever coaches he wants, including Bud. But I love the response he got.

Bud quoted as saying "he is too invested in Hokies to leave for a HC job-I'm rooted here" I love that man.

Fire Whit.

Fuente seems like a magnificent hire, and frankly (pun. Pun?) if he's good enough for Foster he's good enough for me.

Guys. I cannot adequately put into words how excited I am.

So I'll just leave this here:

Let's take a moment and reflect on that man's tie, though. If that thing is Maroon & Orange I would buy one.

"Virginia Tech: Our trees have more school spirit than your students."

I just realized that CJF is a few months younger than me. I feel old and unaccomplished right now.
