Trey Edmunds commits to the Hokies

In a 1:00 PM announcement, as confirmed by Damien Sordelett of GoDanRiver.com, at Dan River high school linebacker Trey Edmunds committed to Virginia Tech over Virginia, North Carolina and Maryland today. Edmunds had been considered a Tech lean but was recruited hard by Mike London and UVa over the last week. Edmunds is a consensus top-10 player in Virginia by all the major recruiting services. Edmunds father Ferrell played football at Maryland and for seven years in the NFL.

Edmunds was selected to play in the prestigious U.S. Army All-American Bowl and spoke about his recruitment to GoDanRiver.com.

"It's a magnificent honor," Edmunds said. "When I came to school today, I had no idea that they were honoring me in front of the whole school body. That, and just basically the spotlight being on me, is amazing. Give all thanks to God and keep working hard."

Rivals.com has Edmunds rated as a four-star prospect and he is a dominating force on both sides of the ball. Defensively, Edmunds recorded 124 tackles, 8.5 sacks and four forced fumbles last season.

On the offensive side, he rushed for 1,324 yards and 13 touchdowns on 169 carries. He was first-team all-Dogwood District on both offense and defense.

Most schools are recruiting Edmunds to play linebacker and, according to Rivals, there are seven schools currently expressing interest — Maryland, North Carolina, Oregon, Penn State, Virginia, Virginia Tech and West Virginia.

"Basically, I'm just narrowing my options down. I'm still evaluating everybody and just going in depth with what everybody has to offer and I guess I'll just make my decision depending on that," Edmunds said. "I wouldn't want to put one over the other right now because I haven't made it to that point yet."

"Trey always wants to play against the best, wants to be around the best and wants to be a part of the best," Dan River coach and Trey's father, Ferrell Edmunds, said. "It'll be a great honor for him to be a part of something like that."

Trey Edmunds is among the top 400 seniors to be considered for selection to play in the game. If he is invited to play, he would be one of the 90 top players across the country participating in the game.

"No question I would love to accept that nomination," Edmunds said. "I'm following footsteps of some of the greats and hopefully I can keep my head on straight and put the work in."

Edmunds is also the state's Group A 200-meter dash champion.
