With tonight's news that Duke OC Scottie Montgomery has been hired as ECU's new head coach, and Kirby Smart hiring Pitt's Jim Chaney as part of his Georgia staff, SIX out of the seven ACC Coastal teams have fired/lost/replaced their 2015 offensive coordinators.
The seventh team doesn't really have an offensive coordinator, Georgia Tech.
I don't know if there has ever been anything like this before, although I'd be interested if anyone can dig up something similar. Jim Chaney was a well-respected OC at Arkansas and I imagine going through 3 offenses in 3 years will hurt them. VT, UVA, and Miami all have completely new offensive staffs for the most part.
UNC and Duke both have offensive minded HC's who have a steady role in their offenses, so maybe they are affected the least?
The number one benefactor in my book is Bud Foster.....

Because everyone else in the Coastal is cliched-assed due to VT potentially having a frightening offense to go with Bud's chance at an ears pinned back defense!
Scottie Montgomery at Duke has risen through the coaching ranks pretty fast, and as a Duke alum with both an NFL playing career and later coaching experience with the Steelers, I thought he could very possibly be the successor for Cutcliffe down the road.
UNC losing Littrell to UNT was just bizarre. Announcement during the ACC Champ game? Classy
Honestly, I didnt take it seriously whenever I saw his name thrown around jobs for that exact reason.
I really didnt think he would go anywhere. Its not a bad hire for ECU, it will be interesting to see who these coaches bring in as OC's.

Sometimes it's tough to say. Conventional wisdom said that Ohio State losing Tom Herman wouldn't matter because Urban Meyer is an offensive genius. They weren't nearly as good this year as they were last.
We also said the opposite of that. That Chad Morris leaving Clemson would show just how bad Dabo really was
It's now clear Dabo is a better HC. I had my doubts about Ed Warriner (OSU OL Coach) and Tim Beck (Formerly Nebraska's OC) being able to reproduce what Chad Morris created.
Dabo is clearly a good coach but they are still running Chad Morris' offense and have a QB who is good enough to make any OC look good (ala Tyrod's later years making Stiney look good). They also still have a really good DC in Venables. Clemson is successful functioning on the system that Dabo is an excellent motivator, good recruiter, and figurehead, but they are willing to spend big bucks on coordinators to handle the x's and o's. Nothing really changed when Chad left because people who were on staff with Morris knew enough to keep running it.
I never realized Paul Johnson didn't have an offensive coordinator at GT. I believe he had offensive coordinators at Navy and usually offensive head coaches have OCs even if the OC isn't the one calling the plays. It's tough to run a major college football program even when you have a full staff, so I'm surprised CPJ never hired an OC.

I just saw that Jim Chaney went to UGA. I can't say that is a great hire by Kirby. Chaney has been around and has done a lot of things (he was OC under Tiller at Purdue with Brees as well as under Bert at Arkansas....two very different types of offenses). But Pitt's offense didn't wow me this year. I think Chaney is probably coaches competency (which we found isn't always the case) but not innovative.
Could be a tough fit in Athens.
