Wonder what this means for Lawson's former high school coach? He was listed as Deputy Director of Football Operations. Bartelstein is being listed as Senior Director of Football Operations.
Also, if he's gone, does that mean Lawson is too?
No, Max Warner was the Offensive Quality Control Coordinator. http://www.hokiesports.com/staff/#2015 Football
Good catch. Wonder why he wasn't on the 2015 coaches roster?
Offensive quality was rather uncontrolled this year
That is actually a staff position, not a coaching position. He was listed on the staff page.

Drink.
Also maybe add a little more meat to the post.More was added to make the OP meet TKP standards.
There is more testosterone at LOLUVa than there was meat in that OP
If I posted my thoughts, you'd complain I didn't have sauces...
I post the direct link to the hokiesports article, and not enough meat...
Amazing
It's like we're all married.
You posted on the original post nothing more than a link. While great information was to be had a longer post, like you put up now, goes far in getting people to click on it.
But you kicked your comment off with linking a comment at the bottom of a 300+ post thread and sarcastically said "Drink." Then said add more meat. There's no need for that and if there was, Joe and the rest of staff can handle it. It's unreasonable to expect everyone to read every comment in every thread. I for one am glad we had a new topic for this because we could discuss it without having to go through that massive thread.
In general, follow community guidelines.
100% this.
I think people need to stop pointing out instances when comments get "duplicated" as new threads; some things actually are worth a new thread and discussion. Point out duplicate threads with our usual drinking requirement, because those are usually obvious failures to check the Tracker.
Exactly, pointing out a duplicated comment like this doesn't really do anything positive for anyone. Duplicate threads are fair game, unless they are posted within seconds of each other.
Exactly. I'm fine with it being a new thread because as Warthog said, the other thread is 300+ posts long. But don't just title a post "New Dir of Ops" and have a link. As Joe said in the Community Guidelines, this isn't TSL. Add a few sentences, start a discussion. It seems that some folks are jumping to be the first to release the news which is why we end up with duplicate threads or threads without substance in the OP.
Your post has me thinking.
I've always thought that TKP is less convo and more one line dingers at eachoether and gifs back and forth.
I've been more timid to have convo or thought type posts on here b\c they are always just received with a stupid comment instead of a thoughtful question or something productive.
But since you brought it up- here was I wrote on TSL
One of the things that really set us back against the race against Clemson, UNC, and FSU (who I have decided are our main recruiting rivals in the ACC) was the lack of use of technology and ability to stay on top of recruiting.
I have read several articles or watched several videos over the last few years where it became clear that our staff and coaches were outmatched on the recruiting battle ground.
It was a few years ago at a recruiting night and I asked Shane if it put us behind the 8-ball b\c we didn't have the larger staffs like some of our competitors had. I am not sure if Shane just gave an answer to defend VT or if he really believed it. But I asked how much of an advantage it was for a staff member to do all the leg work and analysis of a high school player so the coach could then come in full of info and knowledge and hit the ground running.
Shane said that part of the fun of coaching was trying to eval the recruits and such - I don't think I got my question across in the manner that I wanted to, b\c what I was really asking was are we being as effective as the other teams we are competing against. And instead I got a coach speak answer about the challenge and fun of recruiting...
Bartelstein brings an operation that we have not had. She will have a comprehensive strategy for each individual recruit and it will be more than a relationship. The relationship will always be the key, but what is needed is the network of information about the recruit that any one of the staff can step in to create that relationship while having all of the information needed.
Frank walked into a Lynchburg recruit's house and called his mom by another Lynchburg players mom's name.. Years of leg work and relationships had been built, but we didn't pass along the small knowledge. This is an extreme example- but Frank wasn't a part of that recruitment until the end, so he when it was his time to step in- there is should be no reason he isn't given a last minute brief.
This may seem to business like for some of you- but that is what we are getting with Bartelstein, and I love it.
Like some of us have said the last few years- we have relied on our coaching evals and Va Hs coaches. None of that is bad in and of itself - but schools that are dominating recruiting now, this is how they operate.
This hire may actually have me the most excited out of all the hires we made. This tells me that not only will the product on the field be different, but that the actual organizational structure and strategy will be different as well.
THIS!!! This would have been a great post to lead us in. It could start off the discussion.
This would have been a perfect post here. Forum topics should, as stated above, be used to drive discussion. Comment on the story. Tell me why I should care.
The one-liners and GIFs are part of our culture in the comments section. They're asides in the main topic. Some people don't like irreverent stuff, but it can be ignored. By and large most participate in our unique culture. But when reporting something, it needs to have substance; this differentiates the forum topic from the simple comment (though these can, and hopefully generally are, useful contributions to discussion). If you're going to initiate a new forum, make it worthwhile.
not to hurt to the signal to noise ratio (except that's exactly what I'm doing), but did you mean irrelevant or irreverent? could totally go either way so really I'm just curious.
Meant irreverent.
I like your thought process here and completely agree. Jimbo flying in the day before Sweat announced was a perfect sales maneuver. He got the last word and I'm sure was prepped to a "T" with all the information he needed. You can't sell every recruit the same way. The more homework you do to find out what's important to them and how what you offer fits that the better chance you have. Funny enough you figure all that information out by forming a relationship with the recruit. I think Beamer et al would be great at forming a relationship but never took that data and turned it into a closing strategy. I work in sales and my job is to prep everything for when my boss walks into the meeting. If I'm doing my job correctly there will be something in the packet for anything (within reason) that may come up. I see this system as you explained the exact same way.
Yep- we just changed the way we do business
Indeed, and now we have a better
See, that's a damn good commentary on it and there's so much more to talk about from that. While the comments section are littered with one liners and gifs, the forum posts are discussion starters. With regards to her filling a void, I think many people don't realize just how much Ballein did. He's very underappreciated because he never gets credit except from those who work with him. I'm pretty sure Beamer would argue that Ballein, just like Mike Gentry, was just as important to the program and its rise as Bud Foster and any other coach.
Good point on Ballein-
I wasn't really focusing this on her replacing him as much as I was focused on her impact to recruiting
Sounds great, but pardon me if I'm a little skeptical.
How do you know that this is the kind of thing she brings to the team? She's the Director of Football Operations, not Director of Recruiting. Also she comes from Texas Tech.. not exactly a recruiting powerhouse. Obviously you have to start somewhere but I'd have preferred someone from a stronger program. I am thrilled that we hired someone with P5 experience though.
Wouldn't she oversee the director of recruiting?
I'm going to be 100% honest, the entire organizational structure of the football program is a complete flustercuck to me. I NEED A CHART.
I'd expect so, but I'd also expect the Dir. of Football Operations to be busy with a ton of other duties as well.
This is the part
"She oversaw all football recruiting operations for the Red Raiders, while developing and implementing recruiting strategies, as well as organizing all on-campus recruiting events. She also corresponded with prospective student-athletes, families and high school coaches in addition to directing all incoming football student-athletes and their families through the admissions process."
FWIW also- she didnt come from a school right now- She was working organizational leadership
"Most recently, Bartelstein served as a senior advisor for Hance Scarborough, LLP in Austin, Texas, assisting in the overall management for the former US Congressman and Chancellor Emeritus at Texas Tech University."
gotcha, that was at TTU though. Was hoping for some direct insight into her expected duties @VT going forward. With that background I'd say it's a safe bet that even if she's not actively involved in managing recruiting, she's going to contribute to a culture shift that leads to improvement in our recruiting & scouting operations.
Also, I don't see her being out of football / athletics for a season being a positive.
Very well said.
It's pretty clear looking at other college programs that Bud Foster's 'out staffed' dilemma when it comes to recruitment was a monumental understatement.
I first noticed it looking at Memphis' staff right after the Fuente hire when it was still 2015.
I think houstons a great example
Georgia - how are you supposed to compete with this
Florida states a pretty good example
Keep in mind our staff was not even close two years ago before Babcock made hires.
does this mean the other guy who tweets nonsense and VT stuff from his personal account is now gone? That would be epic!
Pete Morris? He is the SID, not a position I've seen filled with anyone new.
Not part of the football staff.
New thread title is excellent
Texas Tech and TCU?
Not bad.
If she graduated Illinois in 2006, is she really
2932 years old? Talk about skyrocketing up the career ladder.Well, she'll be 10 years out of college this spring, so I'd guess she's 31 or 32. But yes, she appear to be doing very well for herself!
Math...it'll get after ya!
So would she be working under John Ballein? I'm confused about how the two positions are connected.
She replaces Ballein. Bost replaces Tom Booth. Ballein is moving to an administrative role.
Yay. It's rearrange the third floor time again. Also, Booth will just move back over to hokievision and Bruce Garnes will no longer be with football operations either and is moving to another sport/department.
Hey, Bost, I'm happy to disclose is also my name.
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=caple/050318&num=0
The new director of operations while she was in college.
nice pull
and Josh Bost as Director of Video and Technology.
I've seen the Memphis web presence, and it's pretty good quality.
This is another change to the administration that, while perhaps little noticed by the average fan, greatly adds to the professionalism of the department. These kinds of changes and the people responsible for them are some of the brightest minds in the business. And the difference in the product they put forward will be noticed.
I'm excited for the future of both the athletic department and the institution writ large. Lots of people are in for a shock at what Virginia Tech will be able to achieve and the notion that it's just some poor rural cow college is about to be truly obliterated.
From Hokiesports:
Bartelstein joins Virginia Tech after stints working in football operations and recruiting at both Texas Tech and TCU. The University of Illinois graduate served as the director of football relations at Texas Tech from January of 2013 through April of 2015. She oversaw all football recruiting operations for the Red Raiders, while developing and implementing recruiting strategies, as well as organizing all on-campus recruiting events. She also corresponded with prospective student-athletes, families and high school coaches in addition to directing all incoming football student-athletes and their families through the admissions process.
Her association with Coach Fuente dates back to January of 2010 when she was named the assistant director of football operations and recruiting at TCU when Fuente served as offensive coordinator on head coach Gary Patterson's staff. Bartelstein previously worked in marketing for the athletics department at Stanford University, in addition to assisting with Stanford Football camps. She also volunteered as a recruiting assistant for football during her undergraduate tenure at Illinois, where she also directed summer football camps for the Illini.
I think this hire rocks.
As I noted above, her career trajectory is pretty amazing. She is exactly what we need to revamp our approach to recruiting and the overall operations of the football team.
Doesn't have much twitter presence. 60 tweets, I think two of which are related to this new position.
this might be one of the more vague comments I've seen on here....
She's too busy killin' it to mess with Twitter. Plus I imagine raising a kid takes up time too.
A Director of Football Operations should have a presence on Twitter?

One of the nice perks about being boss is that you get to delegate the mundane jobs like that
