Navy Head Coach Ken Niumatalolo turned down BYU and will be staying at Navy. This leaves few options for BYU, where the coach must be an active LDS, Mormon, church member.

Might be insensitive of me but if the coach must be active Mormon, they deserve to end up with a weak coach. It's stupid to limit your search because of religious requirements
Well, I mean, they are a Mormon university. They make the athletes they recruit agree to abide by Mormon teachings, why not the coach?
I don't think it's stupid to have religious requirements if you are a religious organization.
I just think it's stupid to whine about a lack of qualified candidates.

It says a lot about the pool of available candidates that their #1 guy is a triple option coach.
I don't really agree with these sentiments. Niumatalolo has had a fair amount of success at Navy (see this year) and also deals with unique recruiting circumstances, so I can see how it would be a logical fit. However, the pool of available candidates after Niumatalolo is what I would consider concerning if I were a BYU fan.
It may very well be a fit in every aspect except for throwing BYU's traditional offensive philosophy out the window in favor of a system that will hamstring any future non-option coaches. That's really their prerogative though.
I applaud BYU for sticking to their religious beliefs, before winning football games. That's extremely respectable. My question is, why do they accept players outside who are not LDS but not coaches? Perhaps leadership? It's seems off that they'd let one slide and not the other?
Yeah it's not very often you see schools willing to sacrifice winning for the sake of their culture. Another one that comes to mind is LOLUVa.
I'm fairly certain they have non-LDS players. I vaguely recall reading somewhere that about 1/4 of their players are of different faiths. Their players are still required to adhere to Mormon behavioral guidelines (no pre-marital sex, no alcohol, etc. Though, oddly enough, punching an opposing player in the nads is apparently acceptable.) but they do not have to be members of the Church. I guess they're hoping that 4 or 5 years in the university is enough to convert a few of them, perhaps?
The university is not all Mormon, much like many HBCUs are not all African-American. While they don't require students to be members of the church, they still have to attend service, take religion classes, and complete other religious requirements.

It's because they feel they can convert younger people into Mormons. They recruit people to become part of their religion and it's more cult like then at thing else, so yeah a full grown man who is non-Mormon would probably not into the whole conversion aspect.
Yeah, that went a little bit too far. We're not here to criticize people's choice of religion. Just discussing the merits of a religious school's coaching search and the limitations they face.
I'm not criticizing the religion. I am just saying that Mormon's go on Missions and a big part of there missionaries is to recruit people into the religion. From an Adult outside perspective, it might not be looked upon the same as someone who practices the faith.
Calling anyone's religion a cult is insulting.
Why? Almost every major religion at one time was considered a cult until they gained enough traction. Cult is just a word with a definition that applies to almost every single "major" religion in its infancy
The negative connotation given to a cult in modern society lends itself to the belief that followers believe in things that are often not accepted by other members of society. They are also often radical in nature too. Regardless of what your beliefs are, you would be offended if you were called a member of a cult because of them, so why should it be okay to call someone else's religion one?
Well to be fair, they aren't actually a recognized part of a major religion. Also some of their beliefs are considered extreme to many people in other larger, more popular religions.

I don't know if you mean this comment simply as a generality (which may be accurate), or directly in this sub-thread (which is now insulting a religion), but I think we've gotten to the point where we're no longer being productive or insightful. We've toed the line here in terms of discussing religion on the forums, maybe even crossing it, depending on how you read some of the comments. I think it's time to abort this particular line of conversation.
isn't that the point of most religions? This is exactly like "spread the good word" which you hear in most Christian denominations. I don't understand how that is any different than most denominations of Christianity. I also don't understand what the heck you mean by "practices the faith."
Religions are businesses as well, and all of them have some sort of recruitment. Mormons just have a strict policy that mandates that you recruit more people. Not all religions force you to do so. I have never been asked to personally go recruit someone for my own. It's just something that separates Mormons from other Relgions.
Only reason I brought it up is because everyone was talking about why they would let a student in that is not Mormon and not allow the coach to be. Most people that are grown adults are not influenced by other religious propoganda and are secure with what they believe in. 18 year olds who are trying to figure out who they are in general can definitely be persuaded and influenced.
what I don't understand about this comment is that everyone else seems to be saying that all of the players BYU gets are 20-something year old guys who are finally going to college after doing missions after high school. If that's the case, it implies that most of the athletes BYU brings in are already Mormons.
I haven't really been paying that close attention to this whole topic but I'm curious how many 18 year old non-Mormon kids are recruited to BYU both for football and spiritually.

They go on the missions during their time at BYU. So they enter young adults in their teens and then go on I believe it's a 2 year mission. Then they return and play. I'm pretty sure that they play after the mission has been completed. This why they have many 22 to 24 year olds playing. There QB this year just finished his mission and didn't join the team until half way through the summer sessions.
Well, this explains a lot of things..particularly why they're looking for a Coach who doesn't require conversion. They probably can't wait 2 years while the coach is on Missions before he can come in and actually coach football. That would be bad business.

Saw the Book of Mormon touring production in Orlando. They really did it up since Orlando is mentioned in the lyrics. Definitely my favorite musical and I don't really care for them. American Idiot is another really good musical for non-musical lovers.
The best part about BoM was my wife overhearing some old ladies talking in the bathroom at intermission about how atrocious and awful the lyrics were. They were appalled. I assume they were season ticket holders and just go to everything that comes through that theater.

I mean, BYU cannot be an attractive job for MOST. You need to be an LDS member, limited recruiting pool, AND the expectation of winning. Its that last part that I think is hard. You have to be competitive, but limited in your resources. I guess if you're a really innovative coach that may not deter you.
Winning wasn't a problem for Mendelhall or for Lavell Edwards. There's even a national championship thrown in there. That's better than us.
They are no longer in a conference and not alot of teams want to schedule them for home and home. I think even the holy war is off for a bit.

Some schools enlist a consulting service to help them find their next coach. BYU is activating millions of two man sleeper cells to do it. For the first time, they are actually knocking on doors of known Mormons. "Hello sir, do you have any football coaching experience at the collegiate level? High School level? Pop warner?"

I just want to remind everyone this is a sports site with specific guidelines about the discussion of non-sports topics, and those rules have in no small part made TKP the best damned fan board on the intertubes.
Most of the comments here are 100% acceptable. Several paint the lines very close for comfort. And some few go right over the line IMO.
So I think I probably speak for most of us when I suggest we remember the guidelines and act accordingly when discussing this particular topic.

Could they make exceptions for alums/former players who went to BYU but aren't Mormons? Because with the limited options BYU has right now, it'd be fascinating to see Steve Sarkisian go back to BYU and get his second chance in Provo.
He was the QB at BYU in '96 when they went 13-1 back when Norm Chow was the OC. BYU needs a coach, Sark needs a job, he's a pro-style guy and part of the legacy of great BYU QBs...I think that'd be very interesting to watch.
But Sark is Catholic, so I guess he's excluded from consideration.
I see your point, but I really doubt it. A mormon school would want high visibility fixtures in their college to be mormon as well. More about faith than alum status. That's just my 0.02
