Virginia Tech officially announced Brad Cornelsen as the Hokies' new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Cornelsen served the same roles at Memphis under head coach Justin Fuente. It was reported in early December Cornelsen would leave Memphis for Tech after the Tigers' bowl game. Auburn dropped Memphis 31-10 in the Birmingham Bowl on Wednesday.
"The addition of Coach Cornelsen represents the addition of another key member of our coaching staff at Virginia Tech," Fuente said in a prepared release. "Brad helped us develop a winning culture at Memphis, and he deserves much of the credit for helping Paxton Lynch and our entire offense reach its full potential. We're fortunate that he's joining the Hokies."

Welcome aboard, we hope you help bring us glory and exciting football.
The jigsaw puzzle is complete.
One more still to be announced, right?
Yep one more.
Plus S&C. Memphis's guy signed with Mizzou today, so it won't be him.
Welcome B-Rad!!!
Auburn was not a good team this year. I would have liked to have seen Memphis be more competitive than that.
I would have, too, but I think a large part of the problem yesterday, for the offense anyway, was that the offensive minded head coach, offensive line coach, and wide receivers coach were all missing.
And the QB was thinking about his pending NFL draft announcement. Lynch wasn't even talking to other players and coaches on the sidelines for a while. He was checked out.
Amazes me how much consternation there is with this hire, based on people mostly watching yesterday's game. Reading the comments elsewhere about this announcement is just hilarious.
Where can I read them? I could use a giggle or two.
Yes please share.
A few dumb comments on Andy Bitter's Facebook page for the blog. Most people are pretty rational, but there are those that just fire from the hip with dumb stuff.
Translation: I know nothing about Memphis except what I saw yesterday.
Translation: 3 years and I still can't get the guy's name right, but somehow we're going to suck. (Not sure if this guy was being sarcastic)
I can't read the comments on his facebook post of blog. The negativity and general ineptitude frustrates me to no end. It's like dealing with the kids that you play against on Xbox Live
you should see the crap they spewing over on le sabre based on that game, hilarious
I've been on that site once and my right eye started to twitch.
I for one cant figure out how the hell threads/post work on that site.
I agree, that's like saying we shouldn't retain Bud Foster based on our defensive performance against Tulsa. Foolishness.
Can't tell if serious or not, I saw a lot of that on Saturday/Sunday
As a Hokie in Memphis who's watched Memphis closely this is absolutely hands down the best hire. Yesterday's game proved that to me. Fuente made Lynch and UM better NOT the other way around. If our current players buy in quickly and start believing and the recruiting class is as solid as it looks. DAMNNNNN!
They may not have been good, but they were still way more talented.
Welcome to the family!
Hope he does better with us vs the Vols than he did against Aub
Look, I trust him and all (certainly MORE than Stiney or Loeffler), but that score did concern me a bit.
Looking at one game, in a vacuum, is ridiculous.
Kinda like characterizing one statement I make and overlooking or completely disregarding another?
Not sure what you're getting at.
I'm just pointing out that (in line with what is posted elsewhere), there seems to be a lot of worry about one day's performance, by a team whose assistants were basically all gone and with a QB that was more focused on his future than winning a game. The development of Lynch from an absolute unknown to possible #1 drafted QB by Fuente and Cornelsen is outstanding. And yet people are worried about the outcome of one game? When Memphis was statistically better than VT this year in basically every opponent-adjusted category? I just don't understand the hand-wringing.
I guess it's because I'm a little bit different. Maybe the reason I feel the way I feel is because I'm really excited about our brand shiny and spank-dat-azz new coaching staff & am really hoping they come out and make a big statement to the world by stick-it-in to the Vols, which in turn makes me nervous they won't, which in turn was fueled by the only scoring of 10 pts against Aub (which I agree with previous statements regarding some players checking out and whathaveyou), which in turn makes me nervous because of the coaching staff transition in general. See, it's a sequence for me. Hope that clears it up some.
Lol this mini thread has turned into the equivalent of the Tennessee end zone... Shaded, unshaded, shaded, unshaded, shaded....
How big is your vacuum? LOLUVA size? It must suck a lot.
Don't have a vacuum. See following explanations. AND [if the comment was directed at me] I take particular offense to the "LOLUVA vacuum" reference as I am currently forced to reside in this sh*thole. Reminding me that I live here doesn't exactly make mine or other Hokies' situation better.
Or maybe it just shows how much better the Auburn defense got now that Muschamp is gone.. Seriously that guy is as overrated as coaches come.
I fully agree with GuitarMan. Somehow relating our game next year against Tennessee to a Memphis v Auburn bowl game is absurd. Let me count off the reasons why:
1) As pointed out, Memphis lost their head coach and damn near their entire offensive staff before the game and their QB will be turning pro.
2) VT has a completely different roster and team than Memphis.
3) Tennessee is a completely different team than Auburn. Making that connection because they share a conference is like comparing our team to Georgia Tech's.
4) If you're that worried about it, go watch the spanking Memphis' offense put on Ole Miss this season. Unlike these other attempts at the transient property, that was in fact the same Ole Miss team that handed Alabama their only loss.
5) Tennessee is only one game. For the love of Lane Stadium, let's not allow it to define Fuente or his staffs' ability to coach football or succeed at VT when it will be all of his second game as head coach.
That's fine and understandable. Sorry my explanations for how I feel are insufficient to you.
You can say that but you don't seem to want to listen to the reasons why your concerns don't make sense. Also you obviously can feel as you please but that doesn't mean your opinion wouldn't be perceived to reflect poorly on our fan base as a whole. I read your posts and essentially what they boiled down to was that you're mostly concerned about beating Tennessee next year and if we don't, maybe we have a major problem with our coaching staff. It be a huge mistake to judge the coaching staff on our performance against Tennessee when it's their second game at VT. Not only that, it's silly to correlate what might happen in that game to a game between Memphis and Auburn simply because of conference affiliations AND to judge Cornelson based on a single bowl game. So while people are entitled to think the universe revolves around earth if they want but objective evidence and reason doesn't support it.
And again you overdoing in an incorrect analysis, as well as an almost complete disregard for my following explanation. My original statement was "I hope he does better vs Vols than he did against Aub", NOT "if the team loses the game vs Vols next yr equals problem with coaching staff" OR "Cornelsen failed to drop X number of pts on Aub's D, therefore they will fail against Vols & all their endeavors." That's something OTHER skeptics are saying and what you chose to build around my statement and proceed to judge it. That essentially would be like me taking your statement "it's silly to correlate what might happen in that game to a game between Memphis & Aub [etc]..."and adding "people that feel any amount of concern or worry regarding the upcoming game in Bristol are being silly or absurd". See what I'm getting at? People don't always select their feelings. And YES I'm absolutely focused on the upcoming contest at Bristol because, hey, it's a pretty damn important & BIG game. So I stand by my original statements: I hope Cornelsen has a better game vs Tenn than he did vs Aub, that I trust and am more optimistic about him than Loeffler or Stiney (combined), and that they smash Tenn's ass. FUENTE STAFF EN FUEGO & GO HOKIES! At this point I'm done. I plan on consuming some corn'd whiskey to bring in 2016. God bless you ALL! See ya on the other side!
Corn'd whiskey...I love it. Happy New Year Hokies!
It may only be one game but for those of us who live in "Nothing Sucks like a big orange" territory he damn well better win it or I for one will call this whole Fuente experience a gut wrenching disaster!
/s
You and me both... GO NORTHWESTERN!
Perfect example of "never misses an opportunity." Well done.
Man...wasn't Fuente wathing the Auburn game...guy laid an egg...he's obviously not good at his job...../s
good stuff..let's get to work
I'm super psyched by the Fuente hire (especially the part where we keep Foster) but I'm not gonna lie, I would have been really freaking stoked if we were able to get Herman. Dude's embarrassing one of the best teams in the ACC. And I'm loving it. F fsu
Herman would have been great for 1- 3 years before he bolted for Texas or Texas AM
Yup. We would be a stepping stone for Herman. That's not what we do.
Fuente is a small town guy who seems willing to settle down for a nice little ride in SWVA.
With fuente Oklahoma would be the only school im really worried about but stoops doesn't seem to be going anywhere soon. Hopefully as his daughters age it should make it harder and harder for him to leave
I don't think we have anything to worry about with Oklahoma. I saw once that a Oklahoma reporter asked him what his best memory of playing at Oklahoma was and Fuente said he didn't have one. His playing days at Oklahoma almost made him give up football. I can't imagine he would want to go back there.
Looked to me like Jimbo f'd FSU. Stupid play calling. They could have lost to GT with that play calling.
That Goddard troll on Twitter is absolutely hilarious. He's like a kid who is mad because he didn't get his way.
The fact he thinks Herman or Chip Kelly was coming to VT gets me.
He's constantly tweeting/abusing coaches and acts as if he's all important. Flashing his hokie club email while also bashing Whit for months.
O god he talked about he who shall not be named as a "better option" than Fuente.
#Voldemort4HC
Voldemort would be a better option.
No Debbie Downer is gonna diminish my excitement at this new staff & our chances to get & be better. I'm a first class ticket holder on the CJF hype train.
He must've been wearing his VT gear before Memphis even played the bowl game.
Uh oh...Remember what happened last time we had an OC have a baby?
Yeah, we beat Ohio State.
Which makes me feel better about our chances at Bristol.
You got an announcement to make, McGruber?
LMAO! I WISH! Believe me (since Mrs. HMG isn't a member) y'all would be the FIRST to know.
It clearly does not take much to impress me, but I love that he was sporting this before even being officially named head coach. Love how the new guys are embracing VT!
That's some prime Hokie threads he be swaggin.
Really hoping we announce Scott soon, seems like he would be a good recruiter
So what I'm seeing is that our DC and OC are going to have strong goatee game next season.
This has obviously been what's missing for so many years.
Is Fu going to coach a postion?
Yeah... recruiting
While TN was beating the pulp out of NW today all they said about TN was that next year they will be Alabama. (I paraphrase). I hope BCorn is ready to hang 65 on the Vols!
And just to clarify, that'd be 65 points, not 65 yards.
