According to HokieHaven.com and Chris Coleman of Tech Sideline, running back Trey Edmunds is transferring to Maryland for his senior season.
First reported by @ChrisColemanTSL but can confirm that Trey Edmunds will be transferring to Maryland for final year of eligibility. #Hokiesβ HokieHaven.com (@Hokie_Haven) January 21, 2016
Edmunds graduated and will play right away. It makes sense for him, as he fell behind Travon McMillian on the depth chart and would be among a log jam of backs in contention for #2.
FWIW, Trey's father Ferrell played in College Park in the 80s.

VT Football: now with 33% less Edmunds'
Good for him, I hope he kills it there. This must've been a hard decision w/ two little brothers on the team.
Makes sense, good luck to him.
We'll always have this...
Wish nothing but the best for Trey. Class act.
This is also my 3 seconds of fame. Right after the TD is scored and they go to the crowd shot, that is my big orange back in the middle of the screen cheering with the folks behind me. Ha.
Pause at 23 seconds. You will not be disappointed.
Is that Shane at 31 seconds with the ridiculous celebration?
Yes. I liked that side of Shane.
I always hated that side of him. Made me think...
I think it goes back to Shane growing up around VT players and being their little buddy, which evolved into being a Hokie football player and then coach. He's always been friends with the football players and might have trouble making the distinction between friends and authority figure especially when emotions are extremely positive. I think college guys need someone like that though.
If he wants any shot at the NFL this had to happen with the depth we have at RB and the new style offense he made the right decision. I will always wonder what could have been with him and Tremaine holding down the Mike and Backer together though.
What an unfortunate year.... we lost all our Beamers, 1/3 of our Endmundi AND our last Fuller in one shot. *sigh*
Thanks for the sad reminder, guys.
And the last of our Fullers
and our last Fuller :(
There can be another (not the same family)
http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/player-Jordan-Fuller-14...
And don't forget Bill Roth....(sigh).
Uhhh....aren't we forgetting a certain beloved coach who'd been at VT forever?
Stinespring.
I wouldn't say Lefty was here that long.
Just seemed like it.
just give it about 20-30 years. if vinny corey kyle and kendall really tried, they could procreate enough to field a hokie team of nothing but fullers
I'm gonna be that guy. You're looking at a spread of 14 months between kids by the same mom (excluding twins, for now). Assuming the oldest redshirted and the youngest played as a freshmen, you're looking at 4 kids per fuller on the team at any one time. That's 16 overall. So you'd need at least 6 pairs of twins to make that number high enough to start all Fullers on both sides of the ball. 5+ kids in 5 years for each mama fuller 2.0. I would not wish that on anyone.
of course, if there were 11 Fuller progeny that could play both sides of the ball for an entire football game, this get a lot easier.
Alternatively, if they all joined some polygamist cult, it would be much easier to crank out 22 D1 college football players.
I also gotta ask, what kind of woman would a Fuller have to marry to produce OL sized children? I mean, they're athletic and all, but we're talking about 2 corners, a reciever, and a safety. The kid would outweigh his dad by 110 pounds.
Best wishes to Trey. I guess he's getting the best of all possible worlds - played college ball with his brothers, got a VT degree, and now can compete for more playing time.
Celebrate your successes, Trey:
Exactly, he'll always be a Hokie. Good luck, Trey.
The best of all possible worlds wouldn't even include a College Park, Maryland, let alone having to live there for a year.
College Park- what an absolute dump.
That is being mean to a dump.
Morganhole East?
I'd take Morgantown any day over College Park. And I've never been to Morgantown
Did grad school at UMD. College Park aint that bad.
If you feel that way, you have obviously never been to Morgantown. Congratulations, and keep up the good work. You are lucky.
Am I the only one thinking: Milli Vanilli and Trey?
Seriously, good luck to you Trey. You are a class act and will always be a Hokie. Make us proud.
Definitely a bummer but that backfield was C R O W D E D. I cant blame him.
Or thin, depending on to whom you listen...
Also of note, Maryland's new OC was UNC's recruiting coordinator Trey's senior year at Dan River. So they have a previous relationship.
He looked like he was running in cement for much of last season. Hope he finally gets healthy.
Can't really be surprised that he's leaving with the logjam at RB.
Logjam?
Travon, Shai, Marshawn, McClease off the top of my head. Not counting Rogers.
Hard to count Shai or Williams.
We need a RB recruit or depth will be a problem.
Shane was saying that Shai was looking great towards the end of the season.
Marshawn should NEVER have been on the field for training camp in the summer. I think the medical staff dropped the ball on that one.
We also had people say that Shai was ready last August. And he clearly wasn't.
Maybe both of those guys will regain form. But until I see it, they are in my "hurt dude" folder. Yes, I have actual folders. Color coded.
Please tell me that one of them is a "dude dude" folder.
I would be very wary of any folder named "dude dude." 10/10 would not click.
Shai should be fine he has had a long time to heal. Marshawn will likely not play unless we get short on depth later in the season but with the reinjury no need to rush him back. Still leaves us McClease, Reid, and Wright even if both of them are healthy
The VT medical staff messed up? I'm shocked.
yeah best of luck to him, but just wish it wasn't UMD. Of course it makes sense since he is a legacy and at least its somewhere that he should get playing time at.
Dammit, what the hell am I supposed to do with his helmet now?!! It's too small for me to wear. I guess it'll have to stay in a case in the Hokie Room.
Literally saw him in the gym today. Good for him, tho I will miss seeing the Edmunds trifecta in action this season. Once a Hokie, always a Hokie.
Didn't see that coming.
I saw the writing on the wall when I saw a picture of him with his diploma in hand.
It makes sense for sure.
Yep. I wish him well. I don't think he was ever healthy after the injury vs UVA. The kid worked hard, and should have been on the field as a true frosh. I hope he has a great season at Maryland. Worst case scenario-the donors of Maryland are paying for him to get his Masters. You can't beat that.
Hmm well that leaves McMillian #1, then what? Marshawn Williams, McKenzie, McClease, DJ Reid, and Coleman Fox. That is still a lot of bodies there. I think McClease may have a good chance to be the second best. I would like to see McKenzie come back, but it will be tough. The three Mc's?
But in all seriousness, there is a lot of question marks after McMillian. We have two players with some experience, but they both are coming off of missed seasons due to ACL surgery, one of them being their second. Just my opinion, and its not popular here, but I dont have a lot of faith in Williams. He is coming off a major injury, had weight and conditioning problems anyway and fumbled the ball way too much. He ran the ball ok, but is he the second best on the team? I dont know, could be, but I dont really think so. I would be happy to be wrong, Id love to see him tear it up, but just throwing my 2 cents out there.
McClease had good reviews serving on the scout team from what I remember. I had high hopes for Reid but didnt hear much last year. Fox had impressive high school film, but havent heard a peep from him either.
Anyone else have a guess?
I agree. We are one injury from Stephen Peoples.
Guess we are safe then because Sam Rogers doesn't get hurt, but Peoples is a beast from what I've read and limited film I have seen.
I was about to chime in with a similar comment in regards to Peoples. With less true fullback responsibilities in Fuente's system, Peoples was bound to work more into the RB rotation. And he has the potential to be a beast. Didn't he break off a long (70+ yard) TD run in a scrimmage last spring?
Edmunds broke off a 70+ yard TD run against Alabama. I would prefer he get those carries.
But, now that he's gone, we need to add a RB.
You never want to see your RB fumble at all, but I wouldn't say "way too much": Marshawn's only fumbled twice (losing one). That one was in a pivotal moment against Miami though.
Well there was the "fumble" against Ohio state that wasn't ruled a fumble because there was no immediate recovery so he's had three in about 7 or 8 games of playing time
True Freshman it happens. McMillan had his share of mistakes as well
That one really stuck out to me. If the refs had gotten that right on the field, we more than likely lose the game.
Ouch
There's no way his brothers follow him right? I don't see it happening because they will both likely start here.
Don't even mention it
Yeah, this is a Trey thing for sure. His brothers are solid contributors who will almost certainly compete for starting jobs this year, zero reason for them to leave to sit out a year.
Just a fact of life with the new graduate transfer rules. Best wishes to him!
Good luck, class act
Meantime momma Edmunds can see Terrell the DBU shutdown corner and Tremaine contributing at Backer down here in Blacksburg.
I'm sad to see him go, but I'm sure he wouldn't do it if he didn't think it was the best thing for himself. It can't be easy to leave his brothers. I wish him nothing but the best and hope he gets to have a stellar senior season (as long as we don't play MD in a bowl).
Don't think we have to worry about Maryland making a bowl.
...or making the national championship!
They have Mike London. Woo Hoo!!
That explains how they beat us in 2013. Timecop being Timecop.
Hate to see him go, but he will always be a Hokie first.
I hope he has a great season at Maryland.
The good thing is this gives another open scholarship to fix depth problems elsewhere.
Always a big fan of Trey. Very understandable decision. He was really coming on at the end of his freshman year, sad that leg injury derailed everything for him so much.
Like George Bell and Sweet Feet Keith, once you put on the O&M - you're a hokie!
Big loss, hopefully his Brothers earn plenty of playing time and stick around...
Both should be significant contributors if not starters next year. Obviously we don't know for sure how Backer will play out. Terrell will likely continue to start at corner UNLESS we decide to move Adonis Alexander to corner permanently and then Terrell's role will still likely be significant as some combination of nickel and outside corner. Alexander's versatility clouds how exactly this would look. Then there's also a possibility that both just get straight up beat out at their positions, but it would seem they are in line to contribute.
I'm happy for the young man and wish him nothing but the best. I just wish he could have picked a better fanbase than Maryland's.
Testodu Times
I didn't realize that getting invited to the B1G for your basketball program and geography makes a fanbase seem so snotty before, but lesson learned.
The only thing noteworthy about Maryland football is that they have the most obnoxious jerseys in college football. Won two championships 65 years ago (and haven't been close to getting back since), only won one ACC championship in the past 30 years. Hasn't graduated a hall of fame (or on track to be one) NFL player in 40 years. They have the one of the most obnoxious fan bases in college sports. They can go fuck themselves.
Oh, and college park sucks balls.
I can't give this enough legs...
Agree, hate Maryland. Super obnoxious fan base
They are the first to poke at you if the Terp football team wins. They are the first to say "we're a basketball school" when the football team loses. They love to tell everyone else how crappy they think your team is.
Oh, and Ravens fans think there's a rivalry with the Redskins and do the same thing with them.
Worst fans in CFB.
Agreed with everything until you brought up Ravens fans.
College Park to Fedex Field (Redskins) = 10 miles
College Park to M&T Bank Stadium (Ravens) = 30 miles
Don't lump Maryland fans and Ravens fans in the same group.
Fair. I was jaded by my time in Baltimore, and 90% of the Ravens fans were Maryland Fans
Haha hard to say Ravens fans do the same thing with redskins fans considering the ravens have been almost unarguably better than the redskins the last decade or two, save for a few seasons.
Ravens and redskins is a fun local rivalry for a lot of people, but I've never met a ravens fan who says "well I'm just an orioles/baseball fan" if the ravens lose.
I can't say I've ever felt like the ravens fanbase is known for anything when compared to an average NFL fanbase
Worst state in the country
I won't downvote this but....dude.
This.
What? - Boomer Esiason, Frank Wychek, Jermaine Lewis, Kris Jenkins, Shawne Merriman, Vernon Davis, Torrey Smith, Steffon Diggs
Yeah, that one didn't make much sense to me either as they have had several standouts. Friedgen had a pretty solid crop of talent coming out of there for a short period.
I was thinking along the lines of Michael Vick and Bruce Smith
Well if that's your metric, then Esiason definitely qualifies. He had at least an equivalent, if not better career, than Vick. Both went to 4 Pro-bowls. Esiason was an NFL-MVP in 1988. Vick was comeback player of the year in 2010.
Several of the other Maryland players are also close. Jenkins went to 4 pro bowls. Wychek and Merriman went to 3 pro bowls, each.
Their best players are from 40 years+ ago, but they have put out some pretty good talent of late. Maybe not NFL record talent, but definitely prominent.
I really wish we had landed Diggs.
You forgot that College Park is an absolute shit hole.
Matt Ryan loves College Park.
Shawne Merriman would like a word.
Other that that, I agree wholeheartedly.
Traveled to a bunch of the away game stadiums over the years. UMD was the only place that I didn't feel safe and moved my seat to find other Hokie fans for strength in numbers. It was a few years ago and we were in the student section but we definitely moved 3-4 times during the game to find other Hokies.
Their students are horrible. They're not even real fans and the only reason why Byrd opened up beer sales in the stadium was to market to the fans who waited to come inside the stadium gates until the 2nd or 3rd quarters.
The worst place to watch a game.
Wish the best for him.
I wonder if his uncles Frey and Fremaine went to UMD as well.
I hate to see him go to UMD but at the same time with all the offers we have thrown to RBs we can now make more room for these blue chips (if we land em)
Those were for 2017 commits, Trey only has one year of eligibility left
Yeah, I think the "positive" for VT in this is that if someone was going to transfer out of the RB room I'd rather it be a 1-year guy over a 3-4 year guy. McClease sounded like he was staying anyway, but you had to think somebody was going to leap.
Yea I wouldn't be surprised if Reid or Wright left too. Alot will depend on how well Shai has healed
we'll never know, but I wonder how his career as LB would have evolved
DidWeJustBecomeBestFriends.gif
I think Steven Peoples will make an impact at tailback in Fuente's offense.
#CountryFast
I hope so, I like seeing SWVA players make an impact.
Thank you Trey. I will always remember you for leaving that Alabama fan with a shocked look on his face
