It's the offseason and anything goes. So I've found my new favorite XM station, siriusxm FLY, channel 47, best of the 90's and 00's. It's like being in school all over again. Riding down the street with the windows down blasting the music.

Well I saw "'90s & '00s" and completely ignored the significance of the name "Fly". Not necessarily my cup of tea.
I don't like new music like that but Collio and snoop and DMX oldies being back memories.
Yeah, first thing I heard was Rumpshaker, which is cool. After that I did t recognize a lot.
Funny - i was just looking at my account debating whether i should downgrade since I'll be able to watch all of the remaining NFL games.

Have you ever noticed that Classic Vinyl plays a surprising amount of The Who? I'm not a very big fan of them so to me it gets a little annoying when they play obscure Who songs that I've never heard on any other classic rock stations. Just curious if anyone else noticed/felt the same way.
I have noticed that - and yes, I'm in the same boat as you. I change the station when they come on as I'm not much of a fan either, save for a song - Pinball Wizard. Baba O'Reilly is too pop-py for my taste.
I love the older Who stuff. More creative than musical. Never gets radio play. Listen to pre '66 stuff if you can find it. We always talked about how they sold out for the money after Tommy, But that was an 80's conversation. Perspective.

-Faction: Used to be one of my favorites but now it's more talk than music it seems. Still tune in for Marky Ramone's Punk Rock Blitzkrieg.
-Alt Nation: Also an old favorite that has fallen off in recent years. They went from alternative rock to mostly indie/folk. Listen to this station if you want to hear what future car commercials will use for their music.
-Lithium: Because they occasionally play some Blink or Foo Fighters.

-Howard 100: Mainly for the interviews.
I've somehow been on a free trial for the past month after canceling a subscription that somebody gave me as a gift. Not sure how it is still working but I won't complain. I won't be terribly disappointed when it finally disappears though because the quality seems to have dropped quite a bit over the past few years. They also got rid of the punk channel (although there is one available on the online/app) so finding music I really like is difficult.
I'll just run down my presets:

3- ESPN Radio- Not the same without Colin though, LeBetard doesn't come close.

Shade45. The All Out Show with Rude Jude is genius; probably the controversial/entertaining talk radio since Howard Stern.
AltNation is my go to for music.
I will have to check out FLY, that sounds like something I would enjoy.
1. Alt Nation - Probably my most listened to station but they do seem to have shifted to more of a folk/electronic sound recently
2. Sirius XMU - Great indie rock station
3. The Spectrum - This is my new favorite station within the last year or so. I love the mix of current and classic rock.
4. Opie Radio - I used to be an Opie & Anthony fan but since Anthony was fired the format has changed and I do not listen as much. I still check in from time to time on long car rides.
I have had XM for 5+ years and I have recently considered dropping it. With Google Play All Access I have all the music I really need, except my data cap prevents using it when I don't have WiFi access. I recently called SiriusXM to cancel and ended up staying on for the $99/yr promotion rate. I think I was paying around $175/yr and never bothered to negotiate so it was a pretty easy way to save $75. I guess I will reassess how much I am still listening once the current term is up.
I used to listen to O&A everyday. Once Ant "left" the dynamic was odd and I stopped listening. When I canceled I was offered ridiculously low prices to get me to come back.

I started with an XM unit back in the day so I only know Ethel. It was basically just the more palatable xmu, indie stuff.
Yea alt nation was the same way. Not sure why they decided to change direction after the merger but ethel and alt nation were playing the same things before.
AltNation as well but it's been trending toward pop-ish lately and not as much of the rock alternative. I agree 100% about everything they play ends up in phone or car commercials.

Channel 18 is The Billy Joel Channel right now. My current fave.
I pretty much flip between Ozzy's Boneyard, Lithium, Classic Vinyl, and Classic Rewind.
SXM FC is used occasionally if I can't get home in time to catch midweek Arsenal games.
On my XM1 preset 38 (Boneyard), 41 (faction), 34 (Lithium), 37 (Octane), 43 (Backspin) and 40 (Liquid Metal). Faction is really cool because they play a blend of punk, metal, alt and rap.
Is it just me or does Faction have a tendency to become talk radio at certain times every day? I wanted to like Faction, but they don't shut up.
Yea faction has gotten really bad about that recently. Pretty much any time I'm in the car Jason Ellis/Tim Timebomb/Tony Hawk is on. Even when I listen off times they're replaying one of those. I've also noticed recently that there's another guy Boyce(maybe?) that comes on at nights now and that is horrendous.
Faction before Jason Ellis was the best faction.
es they do have a lot of talk around the evening drive time.
XM2 are all sports and 1 country and XM 3 are pop for my daughter.

I've found that XM Chill (53) is a really underrated channel for when you're on a long road trip and tired of the same old same old. It's usually instrumental downtempo stuff that's easier on the brain when you've been driving for 6 hours and need to detox your ears.

Honestly, since they ditched the Americana station a few years back, I can't find a favorite. I discovered and enjoyed an awful lot of great music there that just doesn't fit anywhere else. It was like when your best ever for life dog dies. You still have a couple of really good dogs, but it just isn't the same.

What are the benefits of satellite radio versus streaming free music? And what is the subscription cost nowadays?
1) not having to pay for the data if you're in the car/traveling and exclusive talk shows (Howard Stern as an example)
2) way too expensive (100-200$)
But, on the plus side of the cost, one doesn't have to put up with commercials that are on FM/AM radio.
Also, as you alluded to, the data crushing of streaming spotify while driving will cost you more per month for the additional data plan than the cost of XM per month.
Plus the majority of satellite stations don't have commercials. I also enjoy getting the TV news stations and ESPN and sports stations.
for me, it's simplicity. i get in the car and the radio is on. no need to sync/login/change apps (going from music to talk), etc. i just get in and drive and the radio works. i can use my steering wheel controls to do everything i need to do related to my radio. i think as people get into their 30s and 40s, paying for convenience and simplifying their already hectic lives is an easier and easier decision. just my $.02

My defaults are AltNation and JamOn.
It's rare, but if I don't like what's playing on one of those two, it's XMU, Shade45, HipHop Nation, Chill, Grateful Dead Channel.
I used to love Octane and LiquidMetal back before Sirius and XM merged. IMO they both fell off after that, but my taste in music also started to evolve away from EVERYTHING METAL AF
How is AltNation? I've dabbled with it, but haven't totally preset it on my radio yet...
JamOn is one of my go-to's!
If you ever listen to XMU, AltNation seems (to me) like just a more mainstream version of that. Whoever mentioned that you'll be hearing a lot of AltNation music on car commercials is 100% true. Lots of catchy stuff that fits commercials well.
Aside from the mindless, high-pitched dribble of Madison (also on Lithium and XMU occasionally I believe), AltNation is my favorite station. They're pretty on top of new stuff coming out and have a weekly show I really like 'Advanced Placement' that features an hour or so of new music from current bands they play or up-and-coming bands that haven't really broken through yet. In no particular order, a few examples of my favorite artists on AltNation: Glass Animals, Beck, Milky Chance, Grouplove, Robert DeLong, Young the Giant, Passion Pit, Modest Mouse, Muse, I could keep going. They also play a lot of older alt/punk bands like Blink, Green Day, and Jimmy Eat World that just aren't my cup of tea. Those times and when Madison is on are when I like to flip over to JamOn. Then I tend to leave that on and never switch back until I reach the end of my trip.
