Tight End Kalvin Cline Announces Transfer to Texas A&M

Some more offseason attrition for the Hokies.

[Mark Umansky]

Kalvin Cline's fall collection will no longer include Chicago maroon and burnt orange. The former Virginia Tech tight end announced his upcoming transfer to Texas A&M.

"Couldn't be more thankful for my time at Virginia Tech," Cline wrote on Instagram. "It's been an amazing 3 years and Hokie Nation has a special place in my heart. It was truly an honor to play for a legend like Frank Beamer and I wish nothing but the best for my teammates this up coming season. But after I graduate in May I will be finishing my last 2 years of eligibility at Texas A&M. Can't wait to do big things at College station and see the 12th man light up the stadium! Gig'em Aggies!!"

Cline caught 30 passes for 362 yards and 2 touchdowns during his Hokies' career. 87% of those catches occurred during a breakout true freshman season for a relatively unknown prospect. Cline played just one year of high school football and committed to Tech the May after national signing day in 2013.

A knee injury derailed Cline in all but two games his sophomore season (he was granted a medical hardship), and he never seemed to get on track in 2015.

As a sophomore, Cline joined Tech's Corps of Cadets.

"Coming into college, you can imagine having academics, football and doing the Corps is a lot for anybody. So I decided I was just going to focus on football and school," Cline told The Key Play in September 2014. "And then I had a great GPA, with football I had a great year, and then I was like 'I do have some time to do another one of my passions,' and that's the military. So I thought this year it would fit a lot better, so I've been catching up with everything and its been going well."

Texas A&M also offers a Corps of Cadets program.

Additionally, former Virginia Tech WRs coach Aaron Moorehead serves the same position with the Aggies.

Best wishes, Kalvin. Hope your time in Texas is successful and that the offense is just your...style. I HAD TO DO ONE MORE PUN.

Good for him. Wish him nothing but the best!

Best of luck and I hope he continues in their corps.

If you play it, they will win.

Yeah I'm happy he's transferring to A&M and (hopefully) continues his commitment to the corps...I'd venture that Moorehead had something to do with this.

Couldn't hurt. But COC seems important to him. As should the current lack of a scholly TE on the roster at aTm. Should get some serious run if he stays healthy. Best of luck to him

the numbers don’t lie and they spell disaster

Guess the question for them is who is their #1 QB.

@hokie_rd

The corps of cadets is not for everyone. My experience, while heavily tainted with my immaturity and youth, was not something I would have gone through had I known more about what I was getting into. Now, this was in the late 60s, and I know things have changed, but not all students are ready for the demands and challenges of being a rat, being in the band, and trying to acclimate to the rigors of college life, all at 17-18 years old. Dragging the Upper Quad, squaring meals while trying to regurgitate idiotic "freshman knowledge", spit shining shoes and polishing brass when I should have been studying, band practice, traveling for parades, etc., was tough for someone who was apparently too immature to structure it all successfully. In those days, if you left the corps in your freshman year, you had to wait a year before coming back to school, and with the draft lurking, well, things were different. Also, with the addition of the Marching Virginians, one can now actually be in marching band at VT without the corps participation, but that was not available for me. While I made it through my rat year, the academic damage I did to myself trying to grow up and keep the upperclassmen off of my butt and fulfilling the responsibilities of marching/playing in the HTs did me in. After serving in the real military, I came back as a civilian and easily handled the academics, had a ton of fun, graduated, and while I will always respect the corps, I wouldn't recommend it for most folks who aren't looking for a military career.
Please understand, I don't blame the corps itself for my experience, it was largely on me, but my memories are decidedly more unpleasant than pleasant from my first year and a half at VT, and nothing but fantastic from the rest of my matriculation.

Yea, I see that.

Moorehead, the gift that keeps on taking.

This bothers me in particular because he possessed a VERY marketable name for a TE. Just sayin....

Very True.

Good luck and good health, Kalvin. We'll miss you, buddy.

isnt it confirmed that Moorehead is now at UGA????

A random Twitter account without any existing credibility tweeted that out and fueled a rumor that did not come to fruition. Ammo isn't listed on UGA's coaching page (James Coley is the WRs coach) and is listed on the Texas A&M page (easily Googleable information).

oops! see that now

Don't sweat it.

Shane and Johnny too. Didn't see them busting up before.

#Sauces - heard we're getting a TE graduate transfer student named Sergio Valente. /s

We put the K in Kwality

Funny my #sauces told me we were getting Hanes Fruitoftheloom.

I'm not sure how accurate my #sauce is, as originally said it was Donna Karan out of New York.
