It lasted into the wee hours of Thursday morning, and 53 fouls sure didn't make it pretty, but don't let the semantics fool you. Virginia Tech thoroughly dominated Wednesday's ACC tournament nightcap from the opening tip, out-hustling, out-toughing and out-playing Florida State en route to a convincing 96-85 victory at the Verizon Center.
"62% of our minutes have been played by guys that didn't have a uniform last year," said Virginia Tech head coach Buzz Williams. "You can say that's why we got beat by Alabama State, but I think there's been a crescendo to how we play...They know what our character is. They know what our recipe is."
That recipe blossomed into a sixth-consecutive win Wednesday evening, the latest a wire-to-wire victory that saw Tech shoot a blistering 60% from the field in the first half. The Hokies naturally cooled off a tad in the second, but Tech's clinical offensive display ultimately proved too much to handle for a helpless Seminoles' defense.
"I thought our ball movement was outstanding," said Williams. "We had multiple paint touches on I think all but four possessions when we scored."
Seth Allen led the way for the Hokies with a game-high 20 points on just 9 attempts from the field. Fellow southpaw Justin Robinson continued his offensive tear with 18 points of his own, teaming up with Allen to create a dynamic backcourt duo that the Noles simply couldn't contain.
"We had no answer for their quickness and speed," said Florida State head coach Leonard Hamilton. "We just got beat by a team that played much better than we did tonight."
Zach LeDay was equally impressive on the interior with 15 points and 12 rebounds, his gutty performance leaving ESPN television commentator Jay Bilas gushing over the South Florida transfer throughout the evening. Justin Bibbs once again paced the Hokies from the outside with four three-pointers, each seemingly coming at the most opportune time to stave off any threat of a Florida State run.
It was without question a pro-Hokies crowd at the Verizon Center, one that helped jump-start Tech to a 5-0 run before fans even got settled into their plush blue seats. The Seminoles weathered Tech's early storm nicely, clawing back to just a 3-point deficit eight minutes in before a pair of buckets from Kerry Blackshear and Chris Clarke extended the Hokies' lead back near double-digits. The Hokies' offensive onslaught only continued from there with six quick points from LeDay and Allen that forced Hamilton into using his second timeout with 7:39 to play. Florida State responded once again, though, rattling off a 6-0 run that pulled them back within five. But the Hokies' ultra-balanced scoring continued throughout the first half and helped maintain a comfortable Tech margin until a Devon Bookert buzzer-beater from well beyond the three-point arc sent the Noles into the break down just seven.
But for as beautiful and free-flowing as the first half of basketball was, the second half was the polar opposite. Each team entered 1-and-1 territory just minutes into the half, and much of the latter portion of the game resembled more of a free throw contest than an actual basketball game. The Hokies certainly didn't mind, though — Allen and Robinson went a combined 19 of 22 from the line — but any semblance of flow was tossed out the window early on.
But despite a half that was largely focused on whistles, the Hokies never lost control. The Seminoles cut the lead to five just once, but Blackshear immediately drained his fourth three of the season to push the Tech lead back to eight with 12 minutes to play. Tech cruised from there on out, repeatedly converting fouls into free throws as they coasted to an 11-point victory in their ACC Tournament opener.
The third-seeded Miami Hurricanes await the Hokies on Thursday evening, well-rested and certainly not lacking motivation after being dealt a 15-point loss in Blacksburg less than a week ago. Potent sixth-man Ja'Quan Newton will suit up for the Canes after missing Saturday's matchup due to a team suspension, and Williams knows the presence of Newton will pose even greater problems for his team.
"He's a really good player. He shredded us last year," said Williams. "If you're a double-figure (scoring) guy off the bench, you're a really good player."
And after being five-point dogs against a lower-seeded Florida State team — it seems Vegas may have missed the mark on that one — the Hokies will no doubt be pups once more as they take on an experienced Miami squad in Thursday's nightcap. But the Hokies, fully embracing their underdog status, wouldn't have it any other way.
"We know basically going into every game that they're gonna say we're gonna lose. We're used to that," said LeDay. "We just wanna come out and prove everybody wrong."

May be one of my favorite Hokie teams ever. This team has heart, heart and more heart.
Miles and miles and miles of heart!
i'm sorta old*, but it's top 3 with 95 team and the 07 team.
*not old enough to know the 80's teams.
'83 team was fun. Took down #1 Memphis State, with the help of a young freshman gunner named Dell Curry. I wore every bit of my Hokie swag to school for a week.
That game was back in the more politically incorrect days. There were some HILARIOUS Keith Lee and Dana Kirk posters.
Awesomesauce, lets keep it up against da U tonight!
Could we be a Cinderella team? They are a blast to watch, with such energy and emotion. This team has returned the excitement to Hokie basketball and it's great seeing the tournament being player where we have a virtual home court crowd!
Good luck tonight, you're made the Hokie Nation proud, already......and ' Thanks' coach for building a TEAM.
...win or lose we'll greet you with a glad returning, you're the pride of VPI...
...with winning hopes we fear defeat no longer...
Let's not forget the second verse
Fight, men, oh, fight, men, we're going to be the champions
Adding to our list another victory;
Football or baseball, the games in which we star,
They're the sports which made old VP famous.
Hold'em, just hold'em, you know the Corps' behind you
Watching every movement that you make.
Winning games was nothing for our teams before you --
Keep the "rep" for VP's sake
Or better yet, VPI Victory March!
You've seen Mountaineers fumble,
You've been in Hurricanes' eye,
And you know 'ol Syracuse
Has learned the force of Hokie-Hi.
Worthy teams from all around,
Like Hoos from UVA,
Know a winning team awaits them;
Victory is ours today.
Am I the only one that prefers the old lyrics to the Victory March? They just flow better. Trying to squeeze "Mountaineers" into the same space as "Hoyas" just doesn't work.
I only know the old lyrics....
I'm just glad that there are more folks out there that know any lyrics other than spelling our mascot.
Needs to be updated to say "Garbage teams from central Virginia, like the Scrubs from lolUVA"
The crowd was rockin - can't wait to go again tonight.
Buzz - Let's Go
BUZZ I LOVE YOU! The Bromance is Strong.
I'm jealous! The TV announcers were saying it was loud like the Cassell. Enjoy the game., and MAKE NOISE! :-)
Does anyone know how to find out when the team pulls back into Blacksburg once we're done (winning the tournament)? I'd like to be there to welcome them home. Would be great to show our thanks with a decent welcoming party.
"LET ME GET THREE CLAPS AND A RIC FLAIR!!!!"
I almost enjoy Buzz' post-game interviews as much as the games lately. They're always drawn around life and life lessons, love and character. This is how a team develops a culture, love for one another, playing for each other, and while we're not yet good enough to show swagger, we can demonstrate a little Zach LeDay attitude here and there. And, I like it!!!! The appearance now that we see with this team that we are showing some relevance and it's only year 2 of the Buzz has started a groundswell among the Hokie Nation & when guys like Jay Bilas are gushing, then we are on to something. A large part of it, to quote the Buzzmeister, " is to recruit character from kids that are raised right and who know right from wrong". If Fuente comes through as well, as I'm confident that he will, Whit will be confirmed as the man who made the Hokies relevant again.
Side note, I was sitting right behind our bench and Whit was sitting all by himself in the chairs behind the hoop right in front of me. I wonder why he was sitting alone, I would have invited him to come stand with us. I could tell he was on edge about the game the whole time. He really wants our sports programs (especially the revenue generators) to succeed. Side side note, we ran into President Sands at Matchbox before the game and he too was alone eating dinner. I feel like of all the people to be at the game, how did these two end up alone. But it is cool to know they were at the game to support Buzz and the team.
Not that they are similar to me in any way, Babcock and Sands, but when I watch an important game, I am a nervous wreck. I can't stand being around people, and I am not the President or Athletic director of a major university. So maybe that was it, just not wanting to have to fake nice when they are going crazy on the inside.
If Whit's behavior during basketball games is anything like it is during football, then he prefers to focus on the game but can barely sit still. I know during football games, he would often wander from his box seat down to the sideline, to the tunnel underneath Lane, and then back up to his box seat. He gets very anxious during the games. I'd imagine with less freedom to do all that during the ACC Tournament that he is just focused on what's happening on the court and would prefer no distractions.
Just hope he's not fretting over Buzz's farewell press conference at the end of the year.
Shut up, Leonard.
FUN FACT #1 - Last night's 96 points are the most under Buzz Williams (breaks 93 v. Wake in January '16 win)
FUN FACT #2 - Buzz Williams has beaten Miami in the Phone Booth before. 2013 NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen.
Fun Fact 3: This is the first time VT has won 6 straight conference games since 1965.
That is Very Sweet!!
This is probably Buzz as a youngun:

Every time I see this, it makes me think of this:

Just an outstanding performance by the boys last night. Finishing the coffee right now and getting ready to head downtown again. Speaking of downtown, how about those timely 3's by Bibbs. Keep it going guys. Make the world believers!!! GO HOKIES!!
I want the canes to feel like it's a repeat at Cassell. I hope they are mentally affected by it and that it will show in their performance.
We absolutely controlled that game. Stats aside, it felt like the game was up to us. To me, it is a sign of a mature, cohesive and very well-coached team.
Totally worth that 2 hours of sleep I didn't get last night.
This ^
I wasn't even drinking and I am still exhausted. Getting old sucks. Oh well, totally worth it.
Hopefully its another late start tonight because GT needs OT to win again ; )
If Georgia Tech goes into overtime again, I may kill Tony Bennett and Brian Gregory myself.
I started saying "Do not go into overtime" with about 2:30 left in that game. You could just see it coming.
And to top it off the Refs made sure the game went past midnight by not removing their whistles from their mouths in the second half.
The second half was ridiculous. Enjoyed the win but I wish the second half wasn't a snooze fest. Thanks refs.
Interesting. My wife and I were fist bumping and whoo hoooing the whole damned game. Snooze fest? When the Hokies are scoring 96 points, there is no snoozing around here.
Don't give me that look. If you were to notice, and I think you should have, I didn't say hooing. I added the extra o just to stave off any of this kind of negative connotation. But, I'll leg you just to reward you for hating on those a-hoos as much as I do.
Yeah we had a ton of fun, going again tonight for sure. Just venting some frustration at the refs turning it into a free throw competition in the 2nd. I don't really watch a lot of basketball and the games that I've seen rarely have that many fouls (besides toward the end if it's close).
Is that what the kids are calling it now?
Wouldn't know what the kids are calling it now. We're 65 and 63 years old. At least we could stay up and watch the whole game without falling asleep.
lol, was doing the same thing
I was at the Green Turtle, just meant another round before heading to the seats
Finally, I feel like being on the West coast pays off. The game finished before 10:00 for me.
I guess that makes up for having to watch noon games at 9:00 AM in the fall.

Running on Pure adrenaline got a few hours of shuteye. So did anybody tell sportscenter that about the late game in that ACC conference tourney thingy in DC last night. Maybe BUZZ refused an interview?
Really enjoyed watching that game. Fell asleep, but DVR-ed it, 'cause I knew I would. Watched it this morning without knowing VT won. Nice to see we control the entire game. 2nd half was a foul-fest, but we hit ~80% so that was sweet. Wish we hadn't fouled them almost as much as they did us - that could be a concern for us against Miami tonight. We need to have good legs on D tonight and not be tired like FSU was last night (lots of flat footed reach in fouls), that will be key to us being competitive tonight. Either we are in a battle tonight for the entire game or we get blasted, we'll see which team shows up. Another victory against MIami would be so sweet, but it will not come easy.
On another note, Jay Bilas was a real tool for most of the game. He has no idea how many VT alumni and fans are in the DC area - he made some comment about so many traveling from Blacksburg (which I'm sure some did). AND, he was just so pro-FSU the entire game, even when we dominated the entire game. I was so sick of listening to him...
I'm not sure we'll be too tired. After all, the refs made sure everyone got enough fouls to keep them on the bench more than they'd normally be.
When was the last time we had 3 guys foul out in regulation?
I liked Bilas last night, two observations that stuck out: his apprciation for LeDay and Bilas picking up on how hard we were playing.
I always like Bilas, one of my five favorite color guys across all sports. And Schulman is always good on the play-by-play.
Bilas went overboard in the whining about the fouls we were 'committing' late in that game. It got to the point that if we breathed, it was a foul, and yet he was bitching and moaning the entire time as if we should have known better. Towards the end, the only way to not foul was to not play defense and allow them to score.
Which absolutely seemed to be what he was advocating. He even at one point mentioned that had we let them score, at least time would wind off the clock. It did get pretty annoying by the end of the game
The man's getting up there in age. He just wanted the game to end so he could go to bed.
I mean, once the clock hit about 3 minutes we should have known better. You guard the ball, if he gets to the basket you give him the layup. We shouldn't have been trying to draw charges at that point, but we were and got called for a couple blocks.
Come on, man. Announcers were fine, can't expect them to know major alumni bases for every single school in the country, and he really couldn't stop gushing over Zach LeDay and how hard we played. He said multiple times that we just play out-worked Florida State and gave us a ton of credit for it.
Have to agree Jay gave VT several positive comments especially Leday and BUZZ. It was more than I expected. I still like to call him Mr. Bias.
I don't disagree that he gave SOME positive comments, but if you average them with the gushing he did over FSU, they certainly did NOT come close to balancing out (scales definitely tilted).
I need to cop me a pair of galloway goggles.
In reality, the only reason that game was even somewhat close was because the refs got ridiculously whistle happy calling a bunch of stuff that wasn't fouls on both teams. If they were allowed to continue play, that was probably going to be a win by >20.
Regardless of what happens the rest of this weekend, I seriously can't wait for the 2016-17 season.
Some of it was whistles on non-fouls, but FSU also got really physical on D and drew those whistles. We seemed to step up our physicality as a response to that. I think FSU realized at halftime that they needed to change up the tone and came out with their backs against the wall.
A lot of fouls, a lot of them warranted. It was a tough game.
Gotta play the cards your dealt. If the refs suck, we just have to be bad. If Ron Cherry trots out there tonight, well...
I never realized Macho Man wore what really amounted to ski goggles. I don't think you can call those sunglasses.
Big Head Problems
Possible silver lining: It was hard to watch, but all of those fouls calls may end up being beneficial for the team tonight. Everyone got a lot of rest with all of the free throws and stoppages. If they had let them play, it could have been a very physical battle with our guys being beaten-up and exhausted for tonight's game with a well rested, revenge-minded Miami squad.
For the first time since the Greenburg era, I regret giving up my season tickets. I will be fixing that problem next year. Buzz has the team far ahead of where most fans thought we would be at this point.
I don't know what was worse... the lack of sleep I got last night or the refereeing.
Of course I kid, I would stay up that late and take a win like that again in a heart beat. But all kidding aside, When I was watching the GT/Clemson game, I knew they were going to call literally EVERYTHING. I think 5 or 6 guys fouled out yesterday, that's unheard of, and a bunch of guys had 3/4 fouls.
I just hope tonight's game starts before 10 pm.
REFS!!!! aHHH!!!
I guarantee you Boozer was yelling 'AND ONE' as he laid that up.
Great win last night. It is so good beating the Crima-noles. Now to do the same to scUM.
Opened as 7.5 point underdogs. Keeping my eye on where the money is going to see if I can get better odds on the moneyline again.
The odds makers must love losing money against tech this year or they know idiots will bit the spread and lose lost the time due to not know how VT really is.
The odds makers ensure they profit every betting line they put up. It's the 50% of the bettors that pick against VT that keep losing money every time.
Up to 9 now but the money is quickly moving to Tech.
