Watching the snapchats over the past couple of weeks it looks as though Lawson isn't having the best spring. I've seen multiple interceptions. Also in the scrimmage clips this past Thursday, on QB keepers he seemed to dance around too much and he ended up missing some holes that were there.
Anyone else have any take on how the QB's are looking? I know it's hard to tell from he clips but anything worth noting?

I really don't think we can put a whole lot of stock into the clips we're getting. We are only seeing a very small fraction of the practices. I am not going to form opinions on whether players are doing particularly well or not from the limited evidence we have to work with.
Yes, based on the clips I see we will have Jack Click as quarterback. I find that a bit of a surprise.
We will see a lot more at the Spring game and later this summer.
I think the Spring Game will be important for him. He seems like an athletic improviser who may not practice as well as others.
Using snapchat to decide if a QB is doing well is about as worthwhile as using it decide if that girl who sends you selfies on it is worth it.
So I should cancel my date for tonight?
Dating is no big deal but would you commit to a girl who you saw only snapchat videos of before you had decide you loved her?
Im committed to Charlotte McKinney right now, although she seems less committed.
That's called stalking and it's a crime.
Well if David Spade is getting with her you might have a shot after all.
Should we use Tinder instead?
For Dwayne Lawson? Yes.
Yea I figured when I saw this thread that you had some sort of insider knowledge/sauces because I don't feel like we have any where close to enough info from the social media videos to make a conclusion on any of the QB's yet. Heck Click has looked pretty solid in everything I have seen so far but I still doubt he's the front runner.
For all we know, it's shadow games. For a while, we haven't been seeing more than about one snap each from Motley and Evans, so does that mean they're being hidden for being bad, or they're both so awesome that Fuente wants to keep them under wraps? Are we being led to believe that Lawson isn't doing well, or maybe that the snaps are indicating the defense did something good on those particular plays and Lawson happened to be under center.
Moral of the story: don't use Snapchat to form judgments. You're seeing a few seconds of a practice that lasts a few hours.
So what your saying is that Fuentes and/or the video editors know we are watching and are pulling the old double fake. Or do they know we are thinking its a double fake and are really pulling a triple fake. Yep my head just exploded.........l
I think this might need to be the new Fireman vs. RichRod gif.
Angry little girl with hairbrush commencing in 3............... 2............... 1...............
Damn class getting in the way of TKPing.
Way to early to tell. Lawson is a physical specimen that needs time to develop.
I agree with all of the "don't trust snapchat" comments, but it seems like he's never been able to find holes on Qb keepers. Go back to his high school tape, he's never seemed to be able to use his speed to his benefit. The best word to describe him as a recruit was "project". Unfortunatey that's how he looks a year later. Needs a redshirt badly.
I will be heading to the spring game and am ready to see how the quarterbacks play. Some guys you can tell right away if they have what it takes or not. In the few times Lawson has played I have not seen anything to make me think he is going to be special, but time will tell.
Just hoping that the offense in general with Fuente greatly improves. I had hope when Stinespring was relieved of his OC duties, but with Loefler it was more of the same and Stiney was still sitting in the booth with him. Now that the sky has cleared of those dreary clouds I am hoping the sun will begin to shine again.
Yeah we've seen more Jack Click than I ever thought we'd see, and I just don't see him being better than any of the other 4 QBs that are on scholarship.
Obviously I could be wrong, but the Spring Game will be way more telling than Snapchat.
Could it be that we're just seeing an actual, impartial, genuine competition? First man to "get it" and make the new offense run like Fuente wants it to is going to have a leg up, regardless of who he is? We see the measurables in these guys, and all are talented, but maybe Fuente is looking for the immeasurables as well. I'm intrigued, but don't look for answers on Snapchat. I agree, the Spring Game will be our first real clue as to what's going on, but I don't look for the issue to be resolved until Fall.
A ton of Jerod Evans on the snaps today. And for what it's worth, he looks like he's repping with all 1st team guys. He has an absolute rocket for an arm. Also a good bit of Josh Jackson today too. He's most likely destined for a redshirt this year, but I'm really excited about him.
Today I actually saw more of Evans than I ever had before and I thought he had a hitch in his delivery and his arm strength looked below average/average.
What did everyone else see? I feel like I should say that I have no horse in this race at all.
Evans may have a bit of a hitch in his delivery, but I think he has a very fast release still. The ball seems to get there in a hurry. I think Lawson has more work to do on his throwing motion and technique, but he no doubt has all the talent in the world. He would probably benefit immensely from a redshirt year, but I'm honestly okay with any of them winning the job. They all look very talented and I'll trust Fuente's and Cornelsen's judgment above all else.
That's funny because I came to the opposite conclusion of both you and the other guy.
In the few clips of Evans I've seen, I thought the same.
I don't recall seeing Lawson on snapchat today at all. Maybe I missed him but I only remember seeing Jackson, Click, Evans, and Motely.
I didn't see him either. Watched it twice because I thought it was odd.
Motley was only shown once.
This might be the definition of reading too much in to it. Spring practice has only been going for a few days and you only get to see 5-10 second clips at a time.
Obviously as mentioned above, the snaps heavily featured Evans, often w the 1's, BUT while it is too soon to assume anything too strongly from short video clips, I think we can all agree he looks the part. Looks big and well put together.
I am pretty sure several,of you spend more dissecting the clips than anyone did on what to put in it. With all the closed media stuff they probably worry more about what not to show than what to show. I'm. Ore interested in effort and attitude than what they show at this point, and like what I see.
Possibility:
The dude filming probably could only make it for a portion of the practice, and that was when they were running more Evans. So thats all he got.
Conspiracy?
The dude only showed good Evans clips and bad clips of Lawson, though Lawson is the number one, so that no one scouting the team would know what to think of the new offense.
I was told that Lawson missed practice yesterday because he overslept. Bad timing for a kid hoping to win the starting job.
IF that is true, then I suspect he won't be around very long...that is an indicator of a total lack of commitment.
There's a thread about it on 247 so it looks like it's the real deal.
At the very least, I can definitely smell a redshirt coming if this is indeed true. Shows a lack of responsibility and maturity.
Which is very disappointing to discover for guy with his talent and potential.
Isn't this about how Loeffler described Lawson last December? I don't remember the exact quote, but it alluded to this type of stuff, didn't it?
Yes, I remember a lot about him not being focused or totally committed in practice. To be fair, I blame a lot of that on Lefty. You have a very highly-touted QB prospect, with Lefty hyping him up at every opportunity (and I have little doubt he may have promised/strongly suggested to Lawson that he would not redshirt). Then when he arrives and Lefty finds out he's not nearly ready to see the field, he completely mishandles the entire situation and wastes a year of eligibility for a few meaningless snaps. Lawson probably had trouble picking up Lefty's jargon and system as well, which underneath all of that complex football brilliance, I believe there just isn't a very good teacher and communicator. Obviously no excuse for Lawson to not give good effort, but I would feel a little angry too if I were him.
That was all over the place, but I think mostly meant to be a jab at Lefty?
Just saying that reports of Lawson being detached or not focused toward the end of last season might have something to do with the raw deal he got with his redshirt being completely blown for no reason. Of course him missing the meeting/practice this weekend is not good if true, and he's ultimately responsible for his own actions, but the chatter we heard toward the end of last year about him not taking practice very seriously comes as no surprise given how his situation was handled. And I fault Lefty a lot for that. If he wasn't ready to see the field, why remove the shirt and have him run a hand full of plays when Chris Durkin was more than capable of doing the same, had already 'shirted, and had been in the system for a year longer? I just think the hype placed on Lawson by the staff as the future of the program was unfair, and then wasting a year of eligibility probably made him feel pretty rough and resentful. And I don't think he developed as a QB under Lefty any more than he already was when he arrived. I'm not surprised how Fuente commented when he was first hired that he really wanted to take the pressure off of Lawson and help him just adjust and learn the position.
I'm going to be contrarian here and say that burning his shirt was justified. Look at the situation, we had our starting QB out with a broken collar bone that required surgery, sure Brewer bounced back quick, but he might not have. At the same time Motley has been a bit injury prone himself, taking a red shirt due to knee surgery and spent the 2014 season behind due to a back injury. Furthermore, toward the end of the 2014 season, when he was brought in as a wildcat QB, he seemingly, at some point get hurt (see the UVA game).
We were a one injury away from losing Motley. Then what? Andrew Ford would have been the best option if he had stayed, but that left us with Durkin and Lawson. They both needed snaps in game time. While Lawson has impressive physicality, he has yet to shown much of a football IQ, and seeing that he's almost already 20, that does not look good for him.
To add to your last point, Lawson will be 21 in July.
Fair enough. I know he has all the talent in the world, I just don't think it was fair to him to get thrown into action for a few snaps and waste a whole year if he wasn't ready to see the field. Lefty didn't pull Ford's redshirt in '14 for a few snaps when Brewer was banged up and Motley had injury concerns as well, although he came close. My point is he was going to ride with Motley as long as he stayed healthy because of experience. Durkin could've backed him up adequately, and barring another unforeseen injury, keep the shirt on Lawson if you don't yet trust him on the field.
It was the last game of the season and we had no shot at winning the ACC championship. Losing your starting QB at the start of the season sucks, particularly when the 2nd string guy is also injury prone. You have to get your next back up reps.
So many other freshman QB's have been able to do it. We need to stop babying Lawson.
Or maybe its a sign of too much commitment? Could have stayed up all night studying the playbook and then slept through his alarm. Theres no point in taking meaning from a a guy still in his first year at school oversleeping by mistake. I bet it happens more than you think
Yeah OK Polly....I don't believe that you believe that
Sleeping in?

That's all I got.
Actually the original subject of this thread was about how I didn't see Lawson on snapchat at all on Saturday. Right as I posted it I found a Twitter video from Saturday with him in it. So he may have overslept and made it to practice late.
This video is from the 5th practice. They just posted it Saturday.
Word is Lawson overslept a 6-7am QB meeting and was conditioning during practice instead of taking snaps.
Is that what the kids these days call "doing laps so that you don't make that mistake again?"
Yea because punishment workouts are frowned upon by the NCAA.
So it sounds like it's between Evans and Mot.
As far as QB names go, I'd say keep an eye out for the dark horse in this race, Jack Click. Dude sounds like a fire-balling QB, kinda like Bert Jones or Joe Kapp - just hope he throws a better-looking pass than Kapp!
Leg for anyone old enough to remember Joe Kapp.
Stumblin', bumblin', one bar facemasked, Joe Kapp?
Loved the guy.
I'm glad I already reserved the JackClick4Heisman.com domain, plus gotta love the 804 roots
pretty soon, web traffic will make it rain!
I'd say things could get pretty interesting if things... Click for him.
If you don't believe in him, you don't know Jack.
The last two snaps I have seen showed a hokiestone wall and said something about a new snap, but ended without proceeding to the videos. I thought I needed to update the app, but that didn't help. I had no problems prior to around last week or so. Any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong? I'm no expert at snapchat, only got it for VT coverage.
Make sure you're following the new account "HokiesFB"
I am...not the problem.
From the description you gave of the problem it really sounds like you're following VTFootball which still displays as "HokiesFB". You have to go back and manually add the username HokiesFB.
Lawson missed 6am QB meeting...
He was at practice just was doing conditioning drills on the side while his QB Brothers were getting reps in.
I missed a few early morning things in college. There were consequences, but nothing I could not overcome by working harder. I hope he and all the players get the message. Not the end of the world. Hopefully a turning point if needed, or additional motivation if an honest mistake. Being late is not and should not be a crime. It should not be acceptable within the program, but not reason for judgement from those on the outside.
The Lawson is lazy narrative has gotten a little frenzied more than once on here. People oversleep, lazy people do it, determined, hardworking people do it too sometimes. No need to question his character for oversleeping a 6am meeting.
Im probably the top on this list, Ive been a little quick to make judgements on him based on what Ive heard and what coaches have said about him, it happens, its not a good look but it happens.
It wont tank his chances, but Id say he has an uphill battle now, if its really an open competition and things are as tight as some of the players are saying it is. If youve got a kid trying to win the starting job and he sleeps through a meeting, regardless if hes characterized as lazy OR a hard worker internally, its going to weigh in, especially if its as tight as its believed to be.
Honestly, I hope the kid sticks around, I don't expect him to be the guy this year but he's a great talent and could be the guy down the road. I just don't want him to see the fanbase trashing his character, let's rally around our hokies and wish the best for them moving forward and not tear them up too bad when they (kids/young adults) make mistakes.
Neither do I... but this is the same fanbase that was calling his number when Motley was in the game because they thought he'd be the next Tyrod. This year is going to be a helluva ride for that part of the fanbase if our QB play stumbles at all.
An unfortunate part of every fanbase.
This. Lawson has plenty of time to learn, develop, prove himself to the coaches, team and fans.
I think a lot of us expected him to be (a poor man's) Deshawn Watson, and be a starter by year two, but that's not happening. Let's say Evan's is the starter for the next two years. Motley is 2nd string this year, Lawson redshirts, and then Lawson is the back up next year. He then has two years of the Fuente offense under his belt, and two years that he could be our starter. Lawson has plenty of time to learn, develop, prove himself, and be one of the great Virginia Tech QB's. Maybe he will, maybe he won't, but it's not now or never - the kid has time.
In my mind, the narrative on Lawson is one of patience, perseverance and dedication. Lefty obviously thought he brought the goods. While I'm not speculating whether they was any talk of early playing time, he basically burned a redshirt year for something like a dozen snaps from scrimmage. If TKP is any indication, the fanbase (or at least the portion that pays attention to recruiting) fawned over him as much or more than we fawned over Austin Clark's commitment. The question then becomes, did Lawson begin to think of himself as an heir apparent, and if so, does he have the grit to fight for and earn something he might have thought was going to be handed him?
To be clear, I'm not besmirching nor even questioning Lawson's character. He might be 100% all in on earning a starting spot here regardless of how long it takes. But when I look at his trajectory since joining our program, it seems that the biggest obstacle to him eventually becoming our starting QB might be completely in his own head and heart.
I agree it's not the end of the world to sleep in and your character shouldn't be questioned because of it. However, if you are competing for the starting spot on a division one football team against three or four other great talents, you've got to set yourself apart. The competition at this level is so good you have to be great at everything. That includes doing your homework when it comes to film, staying after practice and working with your WO, be special in the weight room, working on your technique, making it to practice on time. If everyone could do all of those things then everyone would be starters. However that's not the case and that's how you begin to form a depth chart. When someone slips up. When someone throws two too many inaccurate passes. When someone doesn't run a route correctly one too many times. When someone sleeps in one too many times. The cream rises to the top.

When's the last time Dwayne ran a play that was shown on Snapchat?
I looked hard and I didn't see him anywhere tonight. I didn't even see him stretching or warming up, much less getting snaps.
Last practice before tonight, he was in the tape working as the 3 QB. No word where he was tonight.
Apparently study hall to finish a project. Too bad this isn't UNC.
