Brief bullets tonight as there are some other life things happening:
1) Sam Rogers got some work aligned as a tailback lining up behind Steven Peoples with the number 2 offense.
2) Evans got all the reps with the 1 offense. Brenden Motley appeared to be working with the 2 offense again and threw a touchdown pass to Devin Wilson. The biggest story? I didn't see Dwayne Lawson anywhere on the film. Jackson and Click were taking his repetitions.
3) Wyatt Teller "sat on" Woody Baron (not literally, but the OL coach yelled "sit on it" when Baron tried to bull rush and Teller stonewalled him.) Yosh Nijman threw Ekanem on the ground in his rep in pass pro, but it looked like Parker Osterloh had returned to right tackle in team work. Tyrell Smith had a win over starter Nigel Williams. Tim Settle looked like he was being stonewalled by Eric Gallo, and then beat him cleanly with a swim move back to the inside. Unfortunately Tim looked pretty immobile on some other reps.
4) Running backs appear to be Travon and Shai as the 1's, DJ Reid got a bunch of work with the 2's and Motley. McClease and Fox as the 2's and other QBs, with Rogers getting some work. Hbacks are Rogers, Durkin, and Cunningham (in that order.) I am not sure who is getting work done at the true Y spot- hard to tell from the film.
5) Ricky Walker continues to be a guy that gets my attention. He is generating some pass rush from that second group. Tyrell Smith is grabbing my attention with the second OL. He is winning in pass pro drills and is getting movement on inside zones.

Comments
man i hate this snapchat crap...have NO clue how to use it. can't see shit.
I am sorry.
And it's all your fault too.
Negative, I was not in ANY way, shape or form, blaming it on French. Was simply venting my frustration with my inability to use the app. Thanks to the poster below, I have since figured it out.
I've got your back.
I will proceed under the assumption that you already have the Snapchat app installed.
1) Open Snapchat.
2) Click the three horizontal bars in the bottom right corner of the main screen. This will take you to the "story page".
3) Click the search icon in the top right corner.
4) Search for "HokiesFB" and click the (+) next to their name to add them to your list.
5) Go back to the story page.
6) The HokiesFB story will now appear in you story page for a full 24 hours after it is posted by the VT crew.
7) Profit.
Or to make the addition easier even and remove typos or people searching for "@HokiesFB", just swipe down, select "add friends" and then add by snapcode using the code below
Is Marshawn Williams practicing this spring or is he still on the mend and waiting for summer.
I would love to get him back for short yardage plays.
He had surgery in the fall, so I wouldn't count on seeing him again until next spring, really.
I knew he had a second injury but I forgot it was on the same injured knee. Probably best to let him mend a whole year and a half before going back out there.
Year and a half? He could have a knee replacement and be back sooner. If his knee was destroyed that much by his injury, I'd recommend an early retirement from football. No sense in being a gimp for the rest of his life.
Well, the ACL was one thing. If that were it, he probably would have been back.
But then he did something else to his knee that required another surgery. There's been no official lconfirmation of what happened, but someone here had a speculation about half a year ago.
I thought when I saw a 40 RB that maybe he had made a recovery, but it was #48 DJ Reid. He looked pretty quick between the tackles.
I'm excited to see Reid. Hopefully we don't need him because T-Mac and Shai stay healthy and happy. But he's another young horse in a versatile group at RB.
Obviously there's a pecking order, but he's a beast of an athlete. 6'1", like 235ish? I know he committed and then prepped at FUMA (and came to us as the #1 prep RB after). He could be that short yardage/goal line guy - with speed.
You can see him towards the end of the snapchats in the group huddle in a green jersey
The thing that has impressed me is seeing the RBs make it several yards or more past the line of scrimmage before first contact is being made. I do understand that they aren't taking them to the ground which could take some of the aggressiveness of the D away. Some of the run plays have been held to minimal gain, but my very untrained eye is getting very excited about the potential of this offense come September.
It is really hard to get much feel without context, but it is pretty clear who Fuente thinks he can go to battle with this season on O. Only question marks are RT, 4th WR, Y, and QB of course.
who is the 3rd WR?
Bucky
I laughed but then realized it's true
Even going into last year, I laughed when people were calling Bucky a TE. He is a wideout. Did he line up with his hand on the ground more than a couple plays per game? He is almost always lined up in the slot.
I know Lefty like to tinker with unusual formations, but I don't think I can recall anyone lining up with their end on the ground.
Now there have been plenty of times (especially in the Newsome era) when someone along the OL has had their end on the ground two seconds after the snap...
Explain the game jerseys and chrome helmets. Also Evans is quick out of the pocket. Also Didn't take long for Wilson to show up.
Conte, Baron, and Slye were all named "practice captains" and got to use the game jerseys and helmets
Dayam.
And do I see Teller #57 on the initial double team and then show up again at the very end from screen right to protect the backside?
And another one: (stop me if you've seen these...)
Again, check out the tempo.
This has got to help the D as well....
This, man. This has me salivating. And you're exactly right - the defense will benefit SO much from practicing against this tempo!
Guys are flying around. Looking good. And it really does seem like Evans is pretty obviously in the lead for QB1 at the moment...
Motu on that last one just annihilated
McClease.Coleman Fox.That would be Coleman Fox (#16) that he annihilated.
... And failed to get a hand on Evans who ran right by him.
Actually he did get a hand on him, which is what he is supposed to do to the QB in a yellow no contact jersey. You can see him let up and just hold out a hand to tag him once he had the position to take him down.
I think you two are looking at different plays. Motu isn't anywhere close to putting a hand on Motley on the play where he blows up Fox
I thought Krak was talking about two different plays...
Actually if I'm not mistaken based off of French's film reviews Motu does execute the correct leverage. He is responsible for hitting Fox's outside shoulder (however he doesn't really manage to do this) in order to force Evans inside so Terrell Edmunds can make the tackle.
Your definition of "annihilated" must be different than mine
Annihilated in todays world

I hope coach Fuente knows and keeps the tradition of the fastest guy on the team wearing number 4 and the most athletic guy on the team wears number 7. Evans should not be wearing number 4.
No, that was Ken Ekanem and Woody B disrupting the shit out of the middle, Tremaine Edmunds screen right lookin' like Godzilla and Motu coming unblocked.
That play is the reason yellow jerseys were invented. Evans makes a nifty move once Motu pulls up, but in the fall that play is over before Teller has a chance to protect anything. T-Mac has to at least put a hand on Motu. Evans sees the play is blown up early, and if T-Mac can chip down on Motu it at least makes bailing out & rolling left an option.
Fix is looking pretty tough. Is 85 Cunningham?
Yes.
Also, memorize this like the rest of us. There will be a test on April 23rd with no cheat sheet and heavy spirits.
Thank you Fett. That's when I do my best work!
There was one clip where I was not sure of the OL and DL matchup, but the OL basically stopped the rusher in his tracks. It was impressive.
Also impressed by Nijman getting Ekanem to the ground like he did. That dude is ridiculously strong.
Teller vs Baron and Smith vs Williams both produced OL winning.
I didn't see Big Jon McLaughlin at all in practice today either. Nijman was taking first team left tackle. Osterloh was playing first team right tackle.
Should we be elated or concerned that our OL is getting the better of the DL in these vids?
Both. Spring practice is bi-polar.
You are also supposed to formulate a hypothesis based off of the limited information we have access to and argue that point all summer until fall camp starts.
Isn't being a sports fan fun?
As a fan of Washington sports teams.....no :(
caps were doing so good....
Sigh...I know
Expect, thankfully, I'm not a skins fan.
Wait. So you're telling me we can deduce how the QB competition is going without open practices or players being made available to the media? Fascinating.
Can we though?
I get the joke, its a slight at the media's reaction recently...
but I couldnt tell you how the QBs are doing really, were kind of lead to make the assumption that Lawsons not doing so hot because hes missed two practices, but honestly, if you didnt know the roster, people could easily make the assumption Jack Click was the front runner based on some of these practice clips...
Id like more, for sure, but if it gives us any edge whatsoever, as tiny as it may be, I think I can live with what the team has been putting out, you catch a glimpse without really seeing anything, which maybe is feeding the excitement, its giving people more than enough to fuel the hype train.
I agree with you to some extent, but using the evidence we are given through social media, Evans has been primarily working with the 1's and Motley has been primarily working with the 2's during the last two practices. This could still ultimately mean little, but it is just enough information to clue us in to the way things are moving right now.
You're right, I was just being a smart-ass with that comment.
Sure, I'd love to be able to just watch practices and know exactly how players are performing/underperforming, but it's just spring practice. It's how they do in the fall that I really care about and we'll all get to see that.
I actually think the coaches are making things less open not to hide what scheme/plays were are going to run, but to limit the distractions for the players. Every football coach in America knows what a Fuente offence is going to run and what a Foster defense will look like. We aren't fooling anyone. I think it's so the players aren't constantly poked and prodded by the media. There is no external influences, only football. If that translates to a better, more focused, more successful team in the fall, I'm all for it. I can wait until they run out on the field to learn who the starting QB is.
I was just really tuned off after the Roanoke Times podcast. They were acting like letting the media have more access would hold the team to a higher standard, or they would uncover some story the world needs to hear about. It's spring practice! 99% of the interviews are: "How's spring practice going?" "It's good. We are getting better every day" Ground breaking stuff right there. They also talked about how "fan sites" can't have unbiased analysis of the football program. Because everyone knows the average beat writer's article is a much better judge of the football program than a film breakdown by French.
Sorry for the rant. I'm done. Everyone have a great Friday!
I can't, other than to say who is getting reps with the top group, and who is getting reps with the lower groups. I have no idea how Evans, Motley, Lawson, Jackson, or Click are playing.
checked in with my inconsistant #sauce this morning.... Rumor is that Lawson was working on a required project for a class and missed practice due to the project.
Good for him for putting school first, especially if it was something where he put it off and now is paying the price by missing practice.
It's like the twitter-era version of Iverson's "Practice."
That tweet should be the poster child for why school is important when/if in a few years Cardale Jones is out of the league and no longer came here to play FOOTBALL but is now there to play a JOB...
I do kinda feel bad for him that this has gotten as big as it has. Apparently he had just done poorly on a test and was trying to laugh it off. It's a good lesson in watching what you say/post at all times though, even as some random 3rd string QB.
...well I did not know that...
Its a good thing I didnt have twitter nor was a college athlete while attending VT, who knows what I would have said after some of my exams...I can 100% relate to that, I take back my prior comment now hahah...
As an oldster, I cannot even begin to imagine what life would be like for me if every stupid, inane, and inconsequential thought that fleetingly passed through my brain was in the public record for all to see. Now, explain to me, please, why people do that? I have learned the hard way that you cannot unring a bell.
my sauce said same thing... Fuente is very very involved in the STUDENT part of student athlete.
Warm happy's all around. Every now and then you need a reminder that the less info you have the more dangerous it is to jump to conclusions.
I don't think this would deserve it's own thread, but I find this hilarious:
It's crazy how Teller was once a DL guy. Everything about him looks like an Olineman.
/Bud Foster cries
Bud Foster never cries. He does, on occasion, give his tears an eviction notice and they flee from his wrath.
via GIPHY
If he did cry, they'd probably be diamonds upon exposure to the air.
I disagree. He has a defense mentality, playing to destroy the opponent through the whistle. Some of the most relentless offensive players were former defensive players. Different mentality, be the hitter, not the hittee!
