I feel like the referee from the Sugar Bowl vs. Michigan is sitting in his recliner watching this Vine over and over drinking a Milwaukee's Best Ice, and while waving it off and yelling "Incomplete!"

Looks like a natural. You can tell he's played some football in his recent past. Always good to see a guy never give up on a play until it's over. Could be a nice grab for the football team!

You have to consider that the QB made the correct read (no safety help) and so went to the fade. Of course since this is a practice scenario, it was just WR on DB 1 on 1.

There would not be safety help over the top if this play were run in a real game. QB notices he has a 1 on 1 favorable match up on the outside and throws a jump ball letting the receiver make a play.

This isn't a play, this is a man coverage drill. Our receivers will be targeted on throws like this against a variety of coverages. It's awesome that we have walk ons with the talent to make a catch like this. Equally important on live game situations is having receivers know when it is and isn't okay to attempt tipping the ball to yourself like this.
Then again, this was such a quick progression that Wilson might have just been trying to tip away an interception, then realized, we'll shit, I can still come down with that.

Maybe your eyes are better than mine, but I had watched that catch maybe thirty times, and after reading your comment, I have watched it another dozen times. I lack the ability to view it in slo-mo, but I think the defender is the one who tipped the ball. Yes, Devin reaches high with one hand, and who knows what his intent may have been, but looked to me like the defender came up at the last second and tipped the ball into the air. The rest, of course, is now fast becoming a minor legend. Rereading your comment, I see that you never actually said he did tip it, but I thought that was what you meant. If not, sorry.

If Devin hadn't made first contact, the defender wouldn't have deflected the ball. Devin tips the ball onto the defender's hand. The ball would have sailed over the defender without Devin's tip.
My point still stands. This is great in man coverage, and a recipe for disaster with safety help. I hope Devin has the football IQ to recognize the difference in live game situations. If he does, he could be a beast with that kind of adjustment and flexibility.

Thanks for the stop action, Illinois. I wasn't taking issue with your larger point about tipping the ball, really, and agree that Devin does look pretty damn good.

I agree with you. I just don't think he was intentionally trying to tip it to himself. I think he was just going after the ball and all he could get was a hand on it, but he stayed with it and made the play after the ball was popped into the air.
A lot of times things happen by accident that we, as fans, like to think were intentional. But most of the time the play is happening to fast for the player to make conscious decisions like that. That's where practice and athletic ability take over.

After watching it a dozen or so times, I definitely don't think he was going up for the ball with the intent of what happened. I think most likely he was just hoping to prevent an interception. His body language is more that of a defensive back. He definitely had the awareness and adjustment to make it a spectacular catch, which is more than you can reasonably ask of a walk on.

90% of what great athletes do is reactionary and instinctive. Their ability to react athletically and instanteously is what separates them from the rest of us.

Can you imagine how many times the horrible Raycom announcers will reference the fact that he's a basketball player while butchering/making up his name during "commentary" if he makes the team?

Dave: Tevin Pilson with a nice grab off the deflection for a TD.
Tim: You know, Dave, Delvin Williams is also a nice small forward on Seth's Greenberg's Hokie Basketball squad.

Doc was the man! Loved that guy as a color commentator - cracked me up with that Cyborg stuff.
I've known him since the days when he had a bar at the Hooter's location in Fairfax way back in the late 80's. He's a great guy.

FWIW, I noticed recently that Hooter's is now closed.
I used to occasionally see Doc Walker with a bunch of kids at Grevey's in Merrifield. It was clear those kids didn't mess with Ol' Doc. What he said was an order, not a request.

Pretty good considering the throw. Not sure if it's on him to get the CB deeper on the route or that throw should have been on his other shoulder. Either way there is a ton of potential here, he looks quick with great hops (obviously).

I think in the trade, that's called great ball skills. Tracking the ball like that as your falling to the ground is an incredible talent that undoubtedly comes from time spent on the hardwood. iFord has some of those same skills. Welcome to Hokie Football Mr. Wilson.

I bet Wilson is going to be a helluva blocker on the edge too.
Guesses on WR corps?
6 man rotation of Ford, Phillips, Bucky, Wilson, Bradshaw and one of Deablo/Kumah/Denmark. Newsome and Carroll dress and play STs.
Does that sound about right?

If he were any good, he would have caught it clean! /s

Hell of a catch.
Looks like a natural. You can tell he's played some football in his recent past. Always good to see a guy never give up on a play until it's over. Could be a nice grab for the football team!
You can see he's got a mind to keep it in-bounds, too.
Only concern is, if the corner had safety help over the top, that's a long interception return.
That being said, I want to see this kind of fight (and ability) in practice.

6%?
dude, charge your phone!
I've got a Zerolemon 9000 mAh tricell battery. That 6% is good for like 8-12 hours.
Yes, he seems to make first contact with the ball, but it's the defender's upward motion that pops the ball into the air.
If Devin hadn't made first contact, the defender wouldn't have deflected the ball. Devin tips the ball onto the defender's hand. The ball would have sailed over the defender without Devin's tip.

Karl Hess would have called offensive pass interference on Devin
Ron Cherry says:

Let's just not play on raycomm
Dave: Tevin Pilson with a nice grab off the deflection for a TD.
Tim: You know, Dave, Delvin Williams is also a nice small forward on Seth's Greenberg's Hokie Basketball squad.
You forgot the part where they call us "Virginia" instead of "Virginia Tech"
Haha well done. I snorted.

...and the official still called it a blocking foul.
Pac12 refs say it hit the ground. Pass incomplete
In all seriousness, if this is the potential he has, you have to play him. You can't teach instincts like that.
That was funny.
Then sad.
He looks to be a better football player than basketball player!
Are you kidding? He's is one of our best defenders! Well, offensively, you are correct.

Nice catch, 5/7. Would start at the 3 spot.
Perfect catch!
You can't teach instinct. Sign 'im up, that feller's got skillz!
