Dabo is now a >$5m per year head coach

Clemson extends Dabo 6 years at $31.75M total

Don't really have much to add, just that I'm glad we locked ourselves into a new coach when we did, because new coaches could come as a premium.

Excluding bonuses, the new deal will pay Swinney $4.8 million in 2016 and feature annual increases, maxing out at $5.65 million in 2021, according to multiple reports out of Clemson, South Carolina.

The ACC now has three coaches that will make at least $4 million in 2016 -- triple the amount it had this past season. Florida State's Jimbo Fisher still leads the way, making over $5 million annually, while Miami coach Mark Richt makes about $4 million a year.

Fuente is a damn steal when you look at some of the numbers of everyone else in the conference.

As someone who went to Clemson, this seemed inevitable. While Dabo is insanely loved by the fans (and vice versa), there is that constant lingering connection to Alabama that will likely be brought up whenever Saban hangs it up. They have the increased booster revenue to make these aggressive money moves and try to make it where he will never want to leave Clemson. In the age where we think there will never be another Bowden, Paterno, or Beamer, Dabo is on the shortlist of coaches I could see sticking it out at one school.

if fuente takes us to a national championship game he's going to get a very similar bump that following spring. he's a steal in terms of pure numbers, but he hasn't accomplished as much yet

I would love that, and I would love to think that if we became a consistent title contender, Fuente would stick around for the long haul.

I could really use a Steve Spurrier quote on this right about now.

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

Man, I hated it that Hatin' Ass Spurrier mostly disappeared after he retired :-/

Best duos in Hokie history: Hall & Adibi, 3rd & Tyrod, Georgia & Liz

Yea I miss that guy.

Actually, I'll miss both Hatin' Ass Spurrier AND Spurrier.

Yeah he's good and all. I don't know if he's 5 mil good.

I honestly don't know if he's a good x's and o's coach at all, but everyone around here (SC), in the program, and recruits are buying what he is selling. If nothing else, he knows how to sell the vision, and hire really good coordinators.

Completely agree. You take his skill set and surround him with elite x's and o's guys and you have a recipe for a National Championship appearance.

Using /s is for cowards.

Appearance. Not necessarily a victory. Just sayin...

Considering CFB took us to a NC appearance and not a victory I wouldn't consider that a slight on him

I know I'm not either. But it does make you wonder if he were in the $EC , would they bump it that much. Also, curious if this will push Clem fans to impatient expectations.

They already think they're an elite blue-blood school. This past season pushed their unbearable delusion past where even I thought it could go. Saw multiple fans predict 20+ blowouts over Bama in the NC and mock traditional powers like they have always been this good.

I am very interested to see how they handle losing Deshaun after this year. They have good recruits coming in but so do lots of other schools that recruit well, and they don't all go to the playoff or win NC's every year.

As far as I can tell, Dabo appears to be a cheerleader not a coach. He sells the program to recruits and has managed to hire great coordinators to actually run the team. There is a reason why I think the entire staff at Clemson might be the highest paid staff in the Country.

And he's now a $5m per year cheerleader

not bad

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Not knocking him, he might be the greatest coach in existence, but that is the role I seem to see him more than coach.

If he can keep a stellar staff and run the program right in a CEO manner he doesn't need to be the best X's and O's guy. Delegate and manage.

@vtscottyb

AND....he's a d-bag!

I don't think this is necessary

Onward and upward

Yeah, after he did that classy gesture in honor of CFB I can't agree with that sentiment.

I've met him, his wife, and his kids. They are great people.

It's going to take alot to outweigh how he acted when pulled over.

What, no sound? Appeared mostly cooperative in the vid. [WARNING: COP PUNS COMING] but dayum that cop was overweight as fuck. Should seriously lay off the doughnuts. Sure he was on thin ice already at the precinct, but I bet he broke through after pulling Dabo over. Gah dang, I would DEF submit his name as a contestant on Biggest Loser [ok, I'm done].

There was sound. Few things about traffic stops, most people would not be allowed to A) get out of there car not to mention have their passenger get out B) most people would not be allowed to walk back and have conversations with the officer while writing a ticket about "I was in law enforcement for 30 years" Dabo and his brother were given a lot of leeway not afforded most people and yet Dabo and his brother still acted like they were being held up by the officer. Like I said if this traffic stop had played out and I was the officer Dabo and his brother would have been back in their car or in mine with cuffs on.

Dabo and his brother still acted like they were being held up by the officer.

Again I fail to see how/why you're interpreting it that way. I know you said there was sound but it wasn't audible enough to decipher what was being spoken (if barely). Were you able to read lips? Was it your interpretation of bod language?

Like I said if this traffic stop had played out and I was the officer Dabo and his brother would have been back in their car or in mine with cuffs on.

You say that about Dabo, but what if a similar situation had played out with Beamer/Foster? Yeah I get the whole "Beamer would never" biz & that's most likely correct. But you're already dealing with hypotheticals here.
For clarification, I am not hanging on Swinney's coattails or defending improper behavior.

I think you make a lot of good points. Your opinion of this could be changed drastically based on the lens you are looking through and it's hard to remove personal bias from a situation like this. Everyone has some moments where they are less than perfect. I know I've certainly been upset about an ill-timed traffic stop before. I am strongly opposed to the 'defining a person by a short clip of a bad moment' mentality.

That said, I have interacted with his family on several occasions and know people who know him more closely and I've never heard anyone suggest he is any less genuine in private than the way he presents himself. I say that as someone who regularly talks about how much I dislike Clemson fans on here.

I don't care who you are, you jump out of your vehicle when I pulled you over and not only didn't get back in when told but walked away to converse with people walking by you are going in handcuffs and into my car. His brother, a passenger in the vehicle is free to do two things, walk away since he has not committed the crime the traffic stop is addressing or sit in the vehicle and keep quite. For the first thing for Dabo to say "I'm here and late for my radio show" shows to me a former police officer the lack of respect for both the officer and the speed limit where he was.

Thanks for your service. But it sounds like you should be equally upset at the officer for getting starstruck (if that happened).

He was worried about his job. Someone called the freaking mayor and tried to get the officer to talk to the mayor on the phone.

he wasn't starstruck, he was a USCe fan who later posted about it on 247, which got him in trouble

Posting it from a work computer on the clock got him in trouble nothing else.

Riggs said McClatchy "posted, while on duty, while using one of our computers, comments about the citation that was issued to Mr. Swinney. He had no permission to do so. He is not our press or PR person.

also

The city of Pickens issued a statement after McClatchy's news conference at his attorney's office in Anderson, S.C., saying he "was terminated for engaging in private activity on company time on company equipment in addition to violating several general orders. It is important to note that Mr. McClatchy spent an hour and a half during his police shift at the police station "editing" his blog post."

1.5 hours for 1 post - we get entire sub-threads on starting punt returners, fisheries policy, and snapchat instructions in that amount of time. I'm betting he still messed a "your" for a "you're" in that post somewhere

I told him I’d crawl on my hands and knees to be the DL coach at Virginia Tech. Now, all of a sudden, I’m sitting in this chair and I told him I’d still crawl on my hands and knees to work here. I just want to be here.

That turned out to be blown way out of proportion. Plus, the officer got fired because he posted details of the arrest on the Gamecocks 247 site while on duty.

Edit: Might as well just link you, here McGruber. Link contains a video of the incident as well.

Sorry I call BS. The officer was fired because he released the video and citation without permission when his chief apologized to Dabo. Dabo and his brother were both unprofessional during the stop and I would have had both of them in their vehicle during the stop not interacting with fans. They refuse then guess who is going in handcuffs in the back of the car until the ticket writing process is over.

Agree totally nothing like people using their social prominence to avoid a wrong they did.

But (no offense) you're the firedude. Don't you have some cats you gotta pull from trees or something? [I put this in jest. Really, I love you]

I'm probably going to get piled on for this but there's something about his face that's just so.....punchable. No idea what it is but that's my first thought every time I see him.

*might be heavily influenced by his teams destroying us 3 times in the course of 2 seasons......

If Dabo's contribution is consistently surrounding himself with the best possible assistants to execute his plans and recruit high caliber players, I think he's doing a-ok as a head coach.

I wouldn't call Fuente a damn steal when you compare him to Dabo. Dabo has accomplished so much more, (ACC titles/recent natty appearance/top 10-15 recruiting almost year in and year out) in very little time. If Fuente is to do that too or something similar, then he will be mostly given a hefty raise later on due to his high demand.
