2016 SGA Orange and Maroon Effect Shirts Revealed

My name's Alexander and I'm a fourth year Landscape Architecture/Urban Planning student and I serve as the Student Government Association's Hokie Effect Director of Design this year. I'll be the 2016-2017 school year's Hokie Effect Director of Basketball and Design.

The Hokie Effect Team is proud to reveal the first Orange and Maroon Effect shirts of the #FuenteEra! This year's shirts mark 15 football seasons since the Hokie Effect program began for the Orange Effect Homecoming game in 2002 against Rutgers (VT 35 RU 14)... I hope that doesn't make some of you all feel too old.

We would love your support of our program as all the proceeds still go back to the Student Government Association and the Athletics Department. You can buy your shirts beginning this weekend the Spring Game if you are in town or online at bookstore.vt.edu! The 2016 football shirts will be on sale through next football season while supplies last.

WHY IS THE MAROON SHIRT LONG SLEEVE EVERY YEAR!!! Alex can I call you Alex? This has to change, short sleeve shirts would get more sellers because you can wear it year round. I love the shirts and we but them every year but I end up not wearing the long sleeve one.

...because the Maroon Effect game is later in the fall, when it's colder?

As someone who only wears long sleeve shirts at church I would be willing to pay more for a short sleeve one that I can wear year round.

Well then you can wear the maroon effect shirt every week. I don't see the problem.

Give it the Bill Belichick treatment.

They alternate every year, at least for the past few years, so there is an even mix of long- and short-sleeve orange and maroon.

I'll have to go back and look but I'm almost positive he last 4 years have been long sleeve maroon.

Odd years maroon are short-sleeve, even years they are long-sleeve, which has been true back to 2007 if my memory (and closet) is correct. Prior to that, maroon was always long-sleeve (e.g. 2005-2006), and before that the occurrence of a Maroon Effect was not consistent (for a while it was always Orange Effect only).

"Exit light..."

I've only been back to Lane the last couple of years, but both of those have been long sleeve maroons. That makes three years running.

Sure, so that amounts to one year when it wouldn't normally have been long sleeve in the last decade. I guess perception is everything. For someone like me who has purchased the shirts every year since 2003 (I have almost all of them, and my sister does have all of them), it doesn't seem like a big deal.

"Exit light..."

I also own the 2003 to present collection. I'd give my left....arm for a How Bout Them Hokies shirt.

No love for the 2002 "No Tie Required" Maroon Effect sweatshirt?

Things have gotten mixed up these past few seasons because of our home schedule and that is the reasoning behind 3 years of short sleeve orange and long sleeve maroon. As you might know, we have a contract with Athletics and Homecoming.

Anyways, last year was back-to-back short sleeve orange and long sleeve maroon because all parties wanted the tOSU game to be an Orange Effect game because of how nice it looked Labor Day night in 2012 against GT.

This year the plan the entire time was to go back to the rotation and have long sleeve orange and short sleeve maroon, but our home schedule and the Homecoming date that the University selected made things impossible to do so.

Obviously, the fans would have not supported an Orange Effect against Miami since it is one of their colors and #AllMaroonEverything is just made for Thursday nights in Blacksburg. Because of this, Athletics insisted on Homecoming being Orange Effect and the primetime game to be Maroon Effect.

You can completely expect the rotation to kick back in for the 2017 season. We'd still love for you to support our program!

Easy solution. Scissors.

We put the K in Kwality

A picture is worth a thousand words. A gif is worth a million.

They used to alternate but I guess they have changed that the past couple of years. I disagree that sales would improve by making both short sleeve. The majority of sales come from the combo so sales probably wouldn't see noticeable improvement.

The Orange Effect design is great. The Maroon Effect design is freaking epic.

"I liked you guys a lot better when everybody told you you were terrible." -Justin Fuente

you missed a golden opportunity to say epicenter

Onward and upward

I misread the maroon effect as epic-center at first...

Then I realized that's how you spell epicenter.

They have to have the maroon shirt as the long sleeve shirt. I'd say a lot more people have long sleeve maroon shirts than orange. And if you don't have a long sleeve orange shirt and it's going to be cold, most people unfortunately will just default to wear maroon and lessen the orange effect.

"Now Miami wants to talk about it." *Cue Enter Sandman*

Or just don't sell a long sleeve. It would cost less to produce and I think would sell more.

This seems like a your preference kind of thing. I like long sleeve shirts a lot.

I love the long sleeve shirts. In fact, I'd prefer more long sleeve shirts. Perfect for the unpredictable Blacksburg weather.

This is true - orange short sleeve and maroon long sleeve tend to sell better for us, but the reasoning behind 3 years of the same is our home schedule. We realize some fans prefer the long sleeve orange and short sleeve maroon so that rotation will likely be back for 2017. I explained it to Hokie Fireman above.

These designs are awesome.

I will say I do have a closet full of long sleeve orange effect shirts (that are practically brand new because I prefer the maroon and you know seasons and things), but to be fair I haven't ordered every year.

Love the designs. Will definitely be picking these up this weekend.

These are the best I've seen since I've been going to Tech (2011). Great work.

Every second counts

Those look great! Last couple years have been good, but these are a step up!

Thanks for the positive feedback. Here's a closer look at the designs!

Do y'all have a committee do these or a student artist? They are great.

It is usually a student contest I think.

We hold a contest in late January for the student-body to submit slogans for the shirts. Once those are selected, tweaked, and approved through Athletics and Licensing we move into the student-body design contest in late February to submit designs for the shirts. Most of the designs we get are actually sketches that we work can work with and digitalize ourselves - all we're looking for is the 'idea'. After the contest is over, we pick our favorites and edit them before working with Athletics, Licensing, and the t-shirt manufacturer to make the designs perfect and meet the NCAA and Virginia Tech licensing regulations.

Whit and his team have helped tremendously already this season. We're currently filming a video with Coach Fuente right now actually to promote the new shirts and SGA. Be on the look out soon for those!

1: This comes as no surprise to me
2: This sounds freakin' awesome!!
3: I love that Whit is trying to engage the students more...I wish I had that when I was a student
4: I love that Fuente is all about jumping in and involving the fans any way he can. I get the sense that a lot of the Mic'd up vidoes and snapchats of practice reps and things of that nature are ideas that come from the Athletic department, not Fuente, but Fuente likes the ideas and rolls with them.

I like your username...simple, yet effective.

Well, beating UVA is rather simple.

Hokies United l Ut Prosim

I will be getting these. Also, for TKP to think about, I would pay good money for a simple shirt with only a silhouette of skipper on back.

OMG spending my 4 years in Geoscience and studying earthquakes I'm ordering like 5 of the maroon effect shirts!!!

-Semper Primus

Probably the best set of shirts that have been put out in a long while.

But given the orange effect slogan, does that mean winning homecoming gets us a revival of these:

I came through engineering not too long ago and that wasn't common language as far as I know...

I almost called you out for that as well but saw your username and also thought the shirts were pretty awesome so I let it slide.

He could use it to infiltrate the enemy side, and they think he is saying "be at UVA".

Hope my new license plate makes up for it

Solid. I just remembered this. I had an RA my freshman year who was a ChemE and he always said that he was a redshirt Junior. I guess it was his way of skirting the whole "fourth year" controversy. I thought it was pretty clever. Anyway, if you like that, take it back with you and teach the others. Instead of 4th and 5th years we'll have Redshirt Juniors and Seniors.

Onward and upward

Back in my day (cracks neck, prepares "get off my lawn" speech), the ChemE's I knew used "senior" and "super senior," as many of them were there for 5 years due to co-ops and the like.

"Exit light..."

I'm an ME (2015 grad) and I also did a co-op. That's exactly what I called myself. My fourth year of school I said I was a "senior" and my last year a "super senior."

Landscape Architecture class of 2011 here!

The School of A&D has used that language for a while, but it would be new to hear Engineering students using that since I graduated.

Simple solution. In my 5th year, I just referred to myself as a redshirt senior. Sounds much better than 5th year.

These are a lot better than recent years. Especially 2014 Maroon Effect. That was... ugh. Great work!

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

I guess I'm the oddball. I really liked the 2014 Maroon Effect. I wish I had gotten one.

I like the back. The front design is just a little too big for me, though. I prefer shirts to either have a large front design, or a small front design with a large back design.

+1. I can get on board with that.

So I like the graphics, but I think the "On a mission with a winning tradition" slogan is stupid.

Does that make me an old fogy?

On a mission with a winning tradition

FTFY. And yes, it's a dumb slogan, but come on, man, they have to come up with 2 of these a year. Guess they could just do like USMA: make them rhyme with the year and reuse every decade...

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

The rhyming just reeks of trying too hard

but hey, if they sell, they sell
