Battle at Bristol Sold Out

http://wjhl.com/2016/05/18/tennessee-virginia-tech-tickets-for-battle-at...

University of Tennessee and Virginia Tech have sold all of their allotted 40,000 tickets each for the Battle at Bristol, both schools confirmed Wednesday afternoon. According to Knox News, 150,000 tickets have been sold for the battle on the tracks

Glad to see this. Was a little worried VT would not sell their allotment.

UT fans. They bought up a TON and are very excited about the game. We're going to be outnumbered.

We put the K in Kwality

While anyone who looks at the fan base could tell you there would be more Tenn fans there since it's closer to their large alumni and fan population centers. Why do you think a "ton" of the tickets through BMS were bought by Tenn people? I'm think long it's going to be 60/40 or so.

My prediction is 50,000 VT fans and 100,000 Rocky Top singing hillbillys. Just a guess though. I got 6 in the Allison section and a camp site about a half mile away.

So you think Tenn fans bought 85 percent of the BMS sold tickets?

It will be close. I think closer to 65/35 in favor of UT. Most people that live closer to Richmond, Nova, DC, etc. really do not understand the UT presence near this end of the state. It is ridiculous and obnoxious.

UT routinely packs in 100k+ for their home games, even when they lose.

UT sold their 40k very quickly, although they started selling their allotment earlier than VT did.

Out of my friends: VT guys are content to stay away from BMS and watch on tv. UT fans are wondering if I can get extra tickets even if it is among VT fans.

The reality is UT fans will outnumber us significantly. As much as I hate to admit that.

Once you leave BMS, you will have a new favorite team to hate.

Difference being, you'll still hear the VT fans in the fourth quarter.

I am willing to bet you'll see a decent number of Tennessee fans in the Tech sections-- either via buying tickets off Hokies in the secondary market or buying them straight up from Tech when we let it go to public sale. Tennessee sold out their 40k allotment in January 2014. In September 2015 we announced we were opening our remaining tickets to public sale on October 2 (exact amount not announced b/c some were set aside for students, but I think it was approximately 8k tickets). They sold out in less than a day. There was nothing to prevent UT fans buying those tickets and given how many were shutout of tickets thru UT and had been looking for over 1.5 years, I actually wouldn't be surprised if UT fans bought more of those VT public sale tickets than Tech fans.

I would bet UT fans bought significantly more of the BMS tickets than Tech fans. Maybe not 85% but I would put it closer to 85% than 50% due to the makeup of the fan base in that area. Not to mention, UT fans have been exploring alternative ticket options for over 2 years whereas our allotment went to public sale before finally selling out in the fall And I do think they'll be more active on the secondary market than Tech fans. I'm going and bringing a big group, but I do expect it to be about 2:1 UT to Tech. If it ends up being closer to 3:2, I'll be pleasantly surprised.

I'll be surprised if it isn't 3:1....

There is a link to Camp Coordinator through BMS. I think part of the ticket purchase (which actually gets completed) through BMS included a check box to be informed about campsites.

Are you asking about the website or where they're camping? My wife and I will be in Earhart West at a tent site, and we got our tickets through BMS. I'm sure a TON of Hokies will be doing the same.

Thanks! I was just trying to see which campgrounds are the best. It seems there are quite a few options so I was trying to see where everyone else was staying.

I believe the place is called Lady Rentals. We actually found them over a year ago and booked with them. I think we ended up haaving about 15 in our group.

My a dirty horse? Indeed.

I live about 15 minutes from the track. Even though bristol is almost the mid point between the two schools, I can say that the Vol fans wayyyyyyy outnumber the hokie fans in this particular region. It is an ugly site looking at all of that nasty orange. Most people in the tri cities are going to this game, whether they normally attend UT games or not. There will be a lot of fair weather fans for Tennessee. Add that to there already larger normal ticket holders and you have a recipe for the stands to be littered with that putrid color of orange. I would say more like 75% vols to 25% hokies.

I agree. I live about 45 minutes away and all you see is Tennessee fans. Heck, even the school I teach at we only have 3 VT fans and the rest of the faculty are UT fans. 75/25 is right on the mark if I were guessing.

I got my tickets and reserved a campsite near the track. This is going to be awesome.

The Dude Abides

Responded to your original post above.

The EVP of BMS referred to the game as the "Pilot Flying J Battle at Bristol" in the article. Just when I thought this game couldn't get any more American, they sold the rights to the largest chain of truck stops in the country. I will be quoting Ricky Bobby the entire time I'm in Bristol.

Pain is Temporary, Chicks Dig Scars
Glory is Forever, Let's Go Hokies!!

Also, Pilot is one of the major partners with Tennessee athletics along with Dish. Need I say more? I live about 45 minutes for the track and I can tell you this is a Tennessee home game. The Tennessee fans in the area would let you name a price and buy your tickets.

You can call me a conspiracy theorist, or bitter, or just plain stupid, but the headline sponsor for this thing is Pilot Oil, owned by Jimmy Haslam, a UT alum and the largest donor to the school and athletic program. His brother is the governor of Tennessee. I should also mention the founder of Pilot Oil, Jim Haslam Sr. is also a UT alum. I don't think we're going to be allowed to win the game if it's anywhere near close.

I really like to think that stuff doesn't happen in college football. But two times where it felt like a phone call **COULD** have been made to the refs was the 2009 B12 championship when Texas got a second put back on the clock because the clock should stop when you throw away the ball as soon as it breaks the plane of out of bounds (lol what?)... And our 20 second review of the UNC overtime catch last year.

Umm a certain Sugar Bowl.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Join us in the Key Players Club

I didn't include that one because they at least reviewed it for a certain amount of time and the catch rule has always been a point of ridiculous inconsistency. The difference between that one and the UNC game was that they stopped the review like literally 15-20 seconds after they said it was under review. For something (reviews) that often draw ire for how long they take, it was easily the fastest review I have ever seen by a longshot.

the fasted review I have ever seen by a longshot

Bingo, I was there, that review was ridiculously short and I commented about it here on TKP. The replay on the board Was. Not. A. Catch.

Someone didn't want the game to go any longer.

Pain is Temporary, Chicks Dig Scars
Glory is Forever, Let's Go Hokies!!

I was there too, never seen anything like it. Once they showed it on the big board and the crowd erupted in boos they immediately ended the review. So weird.

Can someone explain the legality of why it wasn't a catch?

juggling ball the entire way down, never gained control until he was on the ground, out of bounds.

Thanks.

At the time, not a catch; subsequent to that year, a catch.

@hokie_rd

wait what?

My fault, thought the response was DC not UNC. You were correct. I'll see myself out.

@hokie_rd

We good, I was as confused as you were.

he had control when he was in the air, but then the ball came loose as he came down (before his feet hit the turf) because the defender ripped his arm away. He regained control on the ground only after the ball had hit the grass. Ergo: not a catch.

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

Okay. Yeah I'd been unsure about why a lot of people were
pretty sure it wasn't a catch. Didn't realize it hit the grass.
That was still a great game.

The Sugar Bowl catch should definitely be included in this discussion. It's probably the most relevant to the Pilot/UT situation. I was content to chalk the horrible decision up to simple incompetence until the trophy presentation, where the Allstate CEO started his speech with "As a proud Michigan alum" or something to that effect.

β€œYou got one guy going boom, one guy going whack, and one guy not getting in the endzone.”

Oh the boo birds came out from the Tech side after that. What an idiot, not the way to start that off following a controversial finish.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

The big 3 for me are USC at Fed Ex field, Danny Coale's catch, and the UNC "catch". Ironically, the most egregious was the UNC "catch".

ESPN needed that game to end and end quickly.

A Tennessee home game doesn't have 50,000+ Hokies at it.

It's not a Tennessee home game. Never understood that argument for neutral site games, for this one especially. It's in a freaking NASCAR stadium. Nothing about this will feel familiar to either team.

Always choose joy.

People want to oversimplify home field advantage into a supportive crowd. In reality, it means as much or more to know the nuances of your stadium and your playing surface. The crowd can be screaming their heads off for you, but that won't be worth as much if you have no clue how the turf will feel if it starts raining, or how the wind swirls in the end zone during a field goal attempt.

Cheapest and Stubhub don't belong in the same sentence.

There will be plenty of tickets available on the secondary market for better prices than Stubhub.

Maybe but don't be so sure. Considering they are already sold out I'm willing to bet unless you wait to buy in parking lot prices will stay above 100 for a ticket.

The fact that its not so much a game but more like a once in a lifetime event will keep the price high. Even if you wait in the parking lots, the tickets are still going to be fairly expensive to scalp, perhaps even more expensive than buying now.

The Dude Abides

Uh...what's face value.

Trust me, anyone who wants a ticket will be able to get one and the premium - if any - will be small.

Do have a suggestion on where else I can look? I don't really buy tickets to away/neutral games very often and have season tickets at VT. What are the alternatives to Stubhub? Also, if anyone reading this has 2 extra tickets for sale, I'm looking.

β€œYou got one guy going boom, one guy going whack, and one guy not getting in the endzone.”
― John Madden (describing VT's offense?)

I usually go to 4-5 away/neutral site games per year. Most games I buy on stubhub or in the parking lot. 9 times out of 10, the price drops as you get close to the event as people with unsold tickets want to make sure they get something for them. This could be that 1 time out of 10, but I would definitely wait. A lot of people won't even think to list their tickets on stubhub until they have them in hand. Once tickets are mailed out, you'll see a lot more supply online. And from a pure economics perspective, increased supply is the enemy of price. If you only need 2 tickets, I would seriously wait until gameweek. Your best price will probably be sometime between Thursday and gameday. I wouldn't stress over it; just be patient and let the price come to you. Just my opinion. Good Luck & Go Hokies

Stubhub does not have the cheapest tickets?

I know both schools sold out their 40k allotment a long time ago-- Tennessee announced their allotment was sold out on January 28, 2014. Tech sold 30k of its allotment through Hokie Club sales, set aside an unreleased # for students, and then opened the rest for public sale on October 2, 2015 and they sold out that day. If the other 80k tickets are truly sold out already as well, I'm pretty impressed.

That day is going to be insane.

I was never worried about VT selling their allotment, they just took their time instead of a free-for-all like Tennessee did. I appreciated the extra hokie club points.

Taking our time was really just a function of soft demand though. After giving Hokie Club members about 1.5 years to order tickets, we had only sold 30k of 40k tickets, so we ended up opening it to public ticket sales. I guarantee UT fans bought a good portion of those public sale tickets.

Apparently got downvoted for this? Sorry if it came across as critical of our ticket sales, but nonetheless, it was factual. I bought my 10 tickets. Just wish more HC members did the same so it wouldn't have opened up to public ticket sales.

Well, that was quick. There will be noise!

From another article, again from the Tri-Cities area, the UT folks were talking about a lot of seats for UT faithful. As a Hokie this really sounds like it may be less of a neutral site than we would like:

"UT has sold out its block but there is an overflow area on the Virginia Tech side. That will be par for the course. There is little doubt Vol fans will be in the majority when the kickoff sails under the colossal four-sided TV apparatus hanging by cables above what will become a football field."

That sums it up.

A lot of Hokies will have a new enemy #1 after Sept 10.

I expect something very similar to when we played them in the Peach Bowl. Significantly more orange than maroon. An obnoxious fan base singing Rocky Top as loud as they could from the moment they arrived in Atlanta, and a certainty that they would crush us in the game. This gradually changes to loud cussing, calls for the coach to be fired, and leaving in disappoint over the course of the game. Those few that actually stayed to watch, or stuck around afterward for New Year activities still in their gear were nice respectful people. No need for us to hate.

The weirdest thing about their fans at that game was the number of short, chubby Tennessee men (of all ages) and their female companions being significantly more attractive. Like someone needs to send some young men from out of state for these poor girls having to way under-kick their coverage.

There is no Lane Kiffin this go 'round and the pre-pre-season rankings have begun to emerge. Vol Nation will be beyond sickening up to gameday.

I see attendance as being roughly equivalent to a combination of a UT home game and a Tech home game, 100K putrid orange clad folk and around 55K maroon wearing noisemakers.

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

Sadly, many Hokies will rock orange to this game and defend it by saying orange is one of VT's colors. It was awful how many orange-clad Hokies were at the Sugar Bowl game against Auburn. Maroon is what makes VT different than those schools. Wear it!

Athletic Department ought to just call this "event" (wont be a game...our boys are good, but you cant win vs paid refs) a "Maroon Effect Showcase."

Word on the street is that BMS is going to set up a ticket exchange website to prevent counterfeiting on the secondary market. It also allows BMS to make more money off fees.

I've read this as well, but thought BMS would have come up with something by now. Maybe after tickets are shipped?

Probably. It seems like the BMS staff has been a step behind on everything ticket related from the get-go. I think they got too caught up trying to tack on NASCAR tickets to football game packages. I also know from #sauces that the seating arrangements are/were a flustercuck. They gave the best (non-battlefield) seats to people who bought the tickets as part of a NASCAR season ticket package, plus corporate sponsors, etc. The seats they allotted to the schools were the crappiest ones. I heard from aforementioned sauces that some big time donors from both schools were not pleased with their seats. So then you get down to the low level donors and they're stuck in the turns, up in row 90.

I personally know of major donor and then Hokie Club member going back 30+ years, football and basketball season ticket holder for almost 30 years and his set of tickets are on row 50, even with an end zone on the front stretch. While those are the best seats I've heard of anyone getting (small sample size of 5 or 6), they aren't good seats for someone who shells out major money to the school.

Mine are in Allison Terrace, Row M off the top of my head. My concern is whether or not the support poles will block our views.

I am an entry level member of HC. No long-term standing there.

My buddy and I each got 10 tickets thru Tech in The Allisons (lower level sideline)-- one of us section B and one in section N (both approximately in line with the endzone at opposite ends of the field), rows 12 and 16. Not great seats but not bad either.

Anyone know the layout of the VT tickets vs. the UT tickets?
Are they on opposite sides?

The allocations for the schools are on opposite sides.

There are lots of tickets on both sides that went to BMS season ticket holders.

This link shows how BMS is split up:

https://issuu.com/bristolmotorspeedway/docs/bri-47980_rewardspdf-coaches...

But Vtkey is right. The BMS tickets were split up very randomly. Most of the VT allotment are in Allison and Allison Terrace, thinning out on either side towards the split shown on the map. The $40 seats were the ones sold in the lottery held at BMS back in Feb/Mar.

I like how they have it divided. Hopefully a let's go hokies chant

To a degree, I would also. This would be a huge opportunity: biggest cfb game, bms has concerts during race day, national stage. It's now or never.

I agree with HokieJeep. I think I'd prefer Metallica to play Enter Sandman for a big game at Lane. I'd also like it to be when VT has re-established some dominance on the field.

All of that said, if it happened at this game, I'd still enjoy the hell out of it.

That would be best for Hokies. Period. Metallica has been begged and pleaded with so far and nothing. However they did play and throw opening pitch for SF Giants earlier this month or last. I am curious what it would take to bring them to Blacksburg now. Maybe the circus of Bristol would captivate?

We got our 10 tickets in Pearson Terrace. We requested the Allison's, but I guess that went to the bigger donors. Thank God for the Colossus. However, we did rack up an awesome deal on parking passes. We called BMS and I believe they were only $30? Apparently they're parking people by school because the girl made sure to ask us which team we were pulling for. She said the parking pass was directly across the street, so I'm guessing it's in one of the fields on Highway 421 on the back side of the track. I live 15 minutes from the track, and like it was stated multiple times above, it'll be a lot of Tennessee fans and a lot of people who just want something to do. I know multiple people who cheer for neither Tennessee or Tech that went and stood in line for tickets. I'm thinking the game will be divided up 65/35. We've gotta show up loud!

Good info on the parking pass. When did you buy it? I'm trying to decide if I need to call today to order mine.

If you bought tickets through Tech, you should have had the option already.

Whe I paid for my Battle tickets through BMS, the parking was an available option to add in to the total. The closer lot (eyeballing the map) was like $32.xx per pass. I bought 2.

There was nothing for parking when I bought through the public sale VT opened up last Fall.

When you order tickets, no, that is correct. But I received an email and snail mail invoice showing what I owed minus the deposit and plus TN tax, thanks BMS lol. When I went online to pay my invoice (deadline was like March?), near the end of the session was a parking option with 2 choices. It was not completely obvious in my opinion and was near the end of the payment process.

I'm sure if you call BMS, they would be glad to help you. Pretty confident that parking is still available there to VT ticket holders.

Yeah, it was completely different for the public sale. You bought and paid in full for your tickets. Since then, I've received confirmation of my order and have confirmed full payment with BMS, but no information at all regarding parking.

We bought ours back in March sometime I believe.

I had entered the "lottery" process that was held around Oct 2015, but didn't get tickets then. Well, since they had my email address, this week they emailed a "custom" access code for a special online sale through Ticketmaster that started this morning at 9am ET. I popped online and proceeded to buy 4 tickets in "the Allisons" section. They weren't cheap -- $150 per ticket -- but, I figured it's a once in a lifetime chance.

Here's what's a bit confusing though -- the tickets I bought say "Section A-P, Row 49, Seats 5-8. How in the world could I be assigned Row and Seat #s, but the section left as "A-P". Or, does "Section A-P" stand for Allisons-Section P? I hope that's not the case, as Allisons section P is beyond the end zone.

Anybody understand what Section A-P means?

Your thoughts make sense to me. My tix say section P-DD which = David Pearson - DD.

With the price you paid it sounds like the Allisons section, but I'm quite surprised you got such good seats this late!!! Seem to be better than mine and I'm a HC donor :-(

Okay, thanks for the help, VTdude12. So, it sounds like it's just a complete coincidence that The Allisons section has sub-sections A through P (ie, "A-P"). This is what really confused me, I suppose. :-)

While I'm a bit disappointed to be in section P of The Allisons, I agree with you that, all in all, these seats should be pretty solid. I think, regardless where you end up (other than the "Battlefield" premium sections), we'll need a good pair of binoculars.

Now for the hard part -- finding lodging for overnight after the game. My mother has a place in Knoxville, but I REALLY don't want to have to make that trek late at night after having a few drinks.

Go Hokies!

Knoxville is the last place I would want to head to after this game, win or lose. The traffic would be the least of your problems.

I hear ya. But, I live in Nashville so will have to head through Knoxville at some point following the game.

Wow. I can't imagine the trash talk and bad fan behavior you must endure in the heart of Tennessee.

It's pretty much the buckle of the SEC "belt", with so many SEC alumni moving to Nashville following graduation. Not to mention the UT and Vandy fans.

I've been here 23 years, so I'm used to it. But, it's definitely gotten FAR worse in the past decade with the SEC's dominance (NC's) and VT's slide the past 5 years.

The parking map for the game was released. We purchased the $30 parking passes through BMS back around March and called today to see where we are at. We are in Earhart West, which is at the corner of Exide Drive, and isn't a bad walk. It appears that most VT fans will be on the Volunteer Parkway side and most UT fans will be on the 421 side. They will mail the parking passes out at the end of this month, but the parking in those lots are first come first serve.

I see the VT walk is a lot longer. Trying to tire the players out uh.

Got mine off of there this morning. Pearson L row 58. $40 service fee per ticket tacked on...better than most. But I like the fact that they send you the tickets automatically for printing/whatnot...really takes the "I hope this is legit" thing and eases my mind.

Ticketmaster is notorious for their fees. $40 sounds like a lot, but as you said, the peace of mind is there. Glad you found some!

Alright, sweet, I might be able to ge.....

Holy fuckballs, $250 per ticket for nosebleed seats, before taxes and fees?

Fuck me sideways, that's friggen absurd!

I should have bought through Hokie Club and resold them.

Yeah, I was checking stubhub/vividseats/ebay daily trying to catch a deal at the right time and it was driving me insane. Once I finally found what I kinda wanted I jumped on it and have been breathing easier since. *Frodo image saying "it's done" from ROTK*

Here are some Hokie-related events prior to game:

Included in link is that there are some RV spaces available at a campground where the Alumni Association is holding the official tailgate.

Any one know of a bus going from DC to the game?

Other option is leaving from Blacksburg area (but all I have contacted are sold out).

Just got this email

We are pleased to notify you that your tickets for the Pilot Flying J Battle at Bristol have been shipped.

I told him I’d crawl on my hands and knees to be the DL coach at Virginia Tech. Now, all of a sudden, I’m sitting in this chair and I told him I’d still crawl on my hands and knees to work here. I just want to be here.

Another sure sign that football is very close!

Got 2 of our 9 today! They are actually really nice IMO! No paper ticket crap. It's almost plastic! Comes with lanyard.

Cool, pic?

Sorry brother have no idea how to post a pic on here, if you can give me some directions I will get you on in the morning.

Make sure you hide the barcode if you post the pic.

I'm not sure either lol. Didn't realize they shipped from Arkansas. Probably get mine til Fri at earliest.

Awesome!

If you sell the tickets on a site like Stub Hub, I assume you still get to keep the physical ticket?

Let's Go...

That's usually the case for regular tickets. You just enter the digits on the barcode. It may be different for this game since they're using lanyards.
