Overstreet was among several Texas players dismissed by Charlie Strong two years ago as Strong began his first season as the Longhorns' coach. Overstreet transferred to Sam Houston State and rushed for 821 yards last season, but trouble with the law has put his football career in jeopardy. He has been indicted by a grand jury on a felony charge of credit or debit card abuse, for which a conviction could bring a jail term of up to two years. He was arrested in November on a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge and was charged in March with stealing an iPad from an apartment complex

I don't like this guys odds of getting drafted.

First, good luck and I hope he makes it.

Second, this makes little sense. Has a long snapper ever been drafted? As I understand it, if a player is selected in the supplemental, they would have to give up that pick in the next draft.

It makes sense because declaring for the supplemental draft gets him name exposure. He won't get drafted, but he'll get a chance in a camp somewhere. Second, he makes a valid point about the change in punt protection from prostyle to a spread punt formation.

Still doesn't explain why he chose the supplemental draft process over the regular draft. I'm guessing that maybe he wanted to finish his degree before starting the whole NFL workout process. As a longsnapper, we have to assume that his NFL prospects are probably a bit of a longshot, making that degree pretty important.

However, "He is only the fourth player designated as a long snapper ever to be drafted". So who knows where this will go. Are supplemental drafts considered the same as regular drafts, as far as the type of player that gets drafted?

Recently rewatched the 2012 Labor Day game with GT. Saw the "first collegiate punt" of one walk-on true freshman AJ Hughes. Had to fall on a mishandled snap later that led to a score, but was right back to putting them inside the 15 next time up.

IIRC, Hughes was a scholarship punter.

Edit: They said "invited walk on" during the broadcast, so they knew he was coming, but no scholarship initially.

Also watched 2010 Miami and ACC champ; chris hazely was bored and decided to walk on (Walmart kicker indeed), was perfect for the season (after the Boise State miss).

I went to that game, and I knew the LS would airmail a snap. During 2nd half warmups, every snap back to the punters from him was low and several he skipped back to the punter. You could tell he was uncomfortable with the conditions. Still a heck of an effort by Hughes on that play.

Loved this part from the Q&A. We don't hear this enough from NFL players/prospects.

Q: What will be the first big item you buy once you are in the NFL?

A: I would invest in the stock market.

Sounds like he learned a thing or two in those finance classes. Good for him.

Seriously, I hope he gets on with someone, and I expect he will. It is a very specialized skill, and with fewer teams running a pro pass-block scheme, there are fewer guys able to master it. I this situation it makes sense to declare. He is unlikely to improve his NFL stock playing in a different scheme next year, and he already has his degree.

It may be true that it's a highly specialized skill, but it's also a very low turnover position in the NFL. Those guys don't get banged up as often as a LB or RB, so their careers tend to run longer. I doubt there's more than 2 or 3 openings per year for a long snapper in the entire league. I hope he catches on, but I think it's a long shot. All the more reason to be glad he finished up that degree before declaring his intentions for the NFL. Good luck, Eddie.
